@Colonel_Mustache Ha, I didn't know there was anyone so enthusiastic about Youtube Shorts! I actually got that screenshot from somewhere else, I don't know what video it's from. I do sometimes watch Youtube Shorts when they come up but the interface being so different from normal videos bothers me a bit...
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

Those collections are a steal at $45 for 5 movies. $9 a pop, that feels like a "buy" to me. All these newer movies selling for $30-40 each... I'm good. Not gonna blow that much money on 2 hrs. Even $18 a pop feels expensive, but if it's 4k with HDR and proper surround, and a good movie, sure.
I think I've bulked up the shelf enough for now though. Moving forward, I think I'll try to wait for those Black Friday sales and pile up then for $10/ea.

@JaxonH I really liked The Northman however it’s not a film for everyone. It’s like a bleak nihilistic poem filled with grey so the (very) few moments it has colour it really pops.
If I can humbly suggest a film, looking at the flicks you’re getting you want big lovely looking epics and there’s a film called The Fall. It's a self reflective movie split into two parts, sorta like Princess Bride but not really. One is about a broken bedridden man in hospital who meets another patient who is a young sweet girl who slowly becomes friends which has an intimate close personal feeling story, the other part is a story he tells her which is possibly the most lavish and beautiful epic you will ever see in terms of sets, costumes and cinematography. You can enjoy it on the surface level, you can enjoy it because it's pretty to look at or you can enjoy dissecting it in your head for weeks. My missus works in the movie biz because The Fall was the movie that had inspired her to do so.
@jump
Ooh, I love Princess Bride. I even imported the German 4k bluray release. I'll look into The Fall, see if there's a cheap copy somewhere.
@Colonel_Mustache
The new one. I hear there's a 2nd part that may or may not release. Hope it does. It looks interesting.

@Colonel_Mustache I won't be able to see GOTG Vol. 3 since I will be traveling back home. I have talked to Eagly and all I ask is that you keep everything in spoiler tags. I know you will anyway but you never can be sure.
@Colonel_Mustache I want to post the first track in the listening thread so badly... But I will wait for the opening weekend to do so... I could post it without context but since I have said I have seen the tack list and that track is on it some might think that is the opening track... But I'll wait anyway.
Woah, the creator of the awesome We Are Lady Parts is directing her first movie which is a British Kung Fu comedy where the fights are in anarkalis. I’m so seeing this at the weekend!
My excitement is largely based on it being directed by Nida Manzoor who did the better recent Doctor Who episodes and the creator of We Are Lady Parts. It’s a sitcom set in London about a Muslim all girl punk band which was a delightfully stupid and fun show. I’d rather have a season 2 but I’d happily take a bonkers original movie from her.
Mirai, anime flick by whatshisname who did those Summer Wars, Belle, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time flicks everyone loves. It was a far simpler/smaller film than what he's known for and as its a smaller film about an everyday familyness the animation is simpler and warmer too yet there's still a few clever tricks like slightly changing the colour palette depending on the character. The kid was doing my head the point I was hoping for a We Need To Talk About Kevin twist (that was perfect casting of Ezra in hindsight) and the lil' sod was gonna murder everyone to justify my dislike of him, sadly it never happened. Decent flick, not his best though only because of the heights he reached with his others. Speaking off his other flicks I think it's just Wolf Children of his I've got left to see now.
From Dusk Til Dawn, just good pulpy fun. I've not seen it since I was kid where I stumbled upon it on the telly late at night where my main memory of it was my jaw hitting the floor seeing Selma Hayek dance. I would love to see this going in blind for the plot twist but it still works as even though the first half is the stronger of the two yet you don't feel cheated by the sharp turn. I forgot Tarantino can actually be a good actor after so many cringe cameos in his own films and holds his own against a quality cast which includes Danny Trejo who I'm always happy to see and Michael Parks who was an incredibly underrated actor RIP. Also my jaw hit the floor seeing Selma Hayek again. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Babylon, last years most fiercely debated film (for non-stupid reasons at least) of is Whiplash and La La Land guy's movie a modern masterpiece love letter to cinema or indulgent ramblings of a wannabe Singing In The Rain...it’s neither but as an interesting mess it's more enjoyable than another safe disposable franchise entry. I really liked it as it's bursting with energy, ambition and fun so much so that the biggest action flicks going should hang their heads in shame compared to this mere drama. It's incredibly well made and gorgeously stunning (I regret not seeing it in the cinema now) with a mesmerising score. The decadence feels false at times kinda like when a shut in teetotaller imagines what a wild party is rather than something more genuinely provocative. Margot Robbie steals the show jumping from a coked up cartoon to moments of being real, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say I think she might have a career as a movie star. I do wish these "love letter to Hollywood cinema" type movies would stop though, it's becoming tired and they are always less sincere than the silliness of something Be Kind Rewind.
Blood & Black Lace, a classic murder mystery by Mario Bava who has influenced everyone from uber shiny directors like Martin Scorsese and Tarantino to cult favourites like Edgar Wright and Tim Burton. I do like these types of 60s films, they are just dripping with style right from the sec you hit play. I can see why he is highly regarded as it's shot amazingly and filled with atmosphere so it's still holds up today with one scene involving a bathtub particularly cool and I love the use of space with mannequins. With it being set in the fashion world whilst being a murdery thriller there's lots of lovely colours and a sense of prowling throughout. All of the people being murdered are horrible shallow fashion people in a horrible shallow fashion world, it kinda reminds me of an 80s teen slasher when everyone aside from the virgin final girl gets killed so you watching idiot teens get killed. I LOVE the look of the antagonist in this, they remind me of The Question or Rorschach from DC comics. The acting and plotting are good, maybe underwhelming but it's really the suspense and style you'd watch this for.
@Rambler I like Waltz’s line of I tried to find what you’re talking about online but then got bored so I didn’t. It’s now put into my head the idea of Waltz playing Doctor Who.
I do like interviews where they decided not to take it seriously. I normally like Audrey Plaza where she decides goes weird and starts talking about her witchcraft. Another good one is Harrison Ford who seems to enjoy being grumpy and making the person asking the questions uncomfortable like he’s a lion toying with his prey.
Thanks for the heads up on the article but I was sold on Polite Society the moment I heard the women behind We Are Lady Parts was made it. Such a bloody good show.
I’ve heard of Celine & Julie Go Boating before, I really need to get around to watching it. I first heard of it when Edgar Wright made a list of his 1,000 favourite movies without hyping them and simply sorted by year of release which I went to every now and then looking for a movie to watch which is maybe the best way to find a movie recommendation as who is better than someone who knows and loves movies as much as Edgar Wright does so it was a nice proper mix of cult, arthouse and blockbusters. I’ve lost the link to the list now sadly though.
Got my imported German release of The Princess Bride 4k UHD Blu-Ray yesterday and watched it. It's so good! Definitely sharper than blu-ray. Noticeable film grain, but that's to be expected given the movie's age.
Also didn't have the skipping issue on Chapter 15 that the initial release batch was plagued with. So that's good.
Then I watched The Revenant... wow. That movie is gripping. The raw violence and depictions of survival were shocking, but hard to look away from at the same time. Definitely one of the better movies I've seen, I think.

@jump Mirai was interesting. It felt like an art film for children. Upper-mid-tier for me when it comes to Hosoda films: not as good as Summer Wars or Belle, but better than pretty much everything else he's made to date.
@Ralizah yeah, arthouse for children is good way of putting it. It makes me wonder if he just had kids around that time and the film was his was of appealing to his child to stop being an unreasonable menace around the house.
I wasn’t that keen on Belle myself and prefer Mirai over it. I dunno, there are really cool moments in it but I just didn’t dig it. Perhaps it was the music as it seemed to my ears it was artificial cheese like a soundcloud popstar (in fairness it was going for that sorta vibe) which triggered an instant dislike from me which I couldn’t shake off during the rest of the film. There’s probably something I didn’t see as everyone raves about it and do normally like his flicks.

Studio Ghibli, Makoto Shinkai and Mamoru Hosoda are some of the best examples of "arthouse for children", and also LAIKA's films and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Coraline especially feels like an A24 slow elevated horror film like Midsommar or The Lighthouse but PG-rated and for children.
Emulation and preservation advocate. Tails fan.
