I know someone who worked on the Barbie film. Apparently the entire UK had a shortage of a specific shade of pink paint for 4 months because the movie production bought it all. Literally every B&Q, Homebase etc in the country was all out which makes me feel sad for the all the new born girls having to sleep in gender neutral painted nurseries.

Caught the last hour & a half of the Oscars last night. Good for Everything, Everywhere, all at Once, I haven't seen it, but it's been very buzzy. Glad to see both Avatar: tWoW & Top Gun Maverick each pick up an award as well, in the technical categories anyways. Too bad All Quiet on the Western Front didn't win anything, as I thought that was quite good as well.

Anyhow, these are all the movies I watched this weekend.

City Hunter: Death of the Vicious Criminal Ryo Saeba (Blu-Ray)

The last of the original City Hunter movies/specials.

I don't think it's particularly worse than what came before (if you liked the earlier stuff, it's worth a watch), however I can't help but think something feels a bit off about this one, IMO.

Starting things off, the opening song has a grungy feel to it that doesn't gel at all with the series vibe (feels like it would be more at home in something like Death Note). Otherwise it has the same kinda more muted color palette as Goodbye My Sweetheart, but while that fit that film's tone, this one leaned much harder on the comedy side of things which felt at odds (and even then, I felt the comedy wasn't the series at it's strongest).

That said it's not bad by any means. It still looks absolutely wonderful like the last couple of films, and despite feeling off in spots it's still largely the same City Hunter we've come to love.

Female Yakuza Tale (Blu-Ray)

This is absolutely wild.

Over the top with exploitative sex/nudity, violence (which often comes off as hilarious in this day & age, such as a scene where a guy flicks a bullet up another man's nose), it's absolutely not for everyone, but it's a fun time if you can get into it. Has a very grungy feel to it too.

It follows Ocho, a woman who is violated by the local Yakuza when they accidentally mistake her for one of their drug mules, and then she sets out for revenge. Can definitely tell it's the type of film that partially influenced the Kill Bill movies (though again, this is much more out there).

Project A-Ko 2 (Blu-Ray)

If you liked the first one this is pretty much more of the same.

The aliens have refurbished their ship as an entertainment center but are plotting to take off with C-ko, the Earth Defense Forces, sour after their defeat in the first film, plan to steal the ship, with an ever bickering A-ko & B-ko caught in-between. It's a bit more truncated as a 50 minute OVA as opposed to the full length original, but that keeps it moving at a nice clip & it still manages to have it's fair share of both laughs & action.

Shogun's Samurai (Blu-Ray)

Historical fiction film that centers around the sons of the second Tokugawa Shogun, and the conflict between them over who will inherit the position.

It's actually a really solid drama. A bit slow in spots, but it's interesting to follow, with some nice environmental & action shots. A handful of the action scenes come across as weirdly superhuman for how grounded the rest of the film feels (like a scene near the end where a guy cuts through some sort of after image of his opponent, where he really cut clean through a statue), but it's kinda weird in a way that's charming IMO.

Project A-Ko 3 (Blu-Ray)

More A-Ko goodness. This time C-ko is feeling left out as A-ko & B-ko are squabbling over a guy instead of her, but unluckily for them he only has eyes for C-ko (who couldn't care less about him).

Looks great aesthetically, and it's full of fun vibes & gags, though it's a bit anticlimactic. I was wondering when the big action set piece was going to happen, and it never does. A-ko & B-ko finally get ready to throw down, the town's volunteer defense forces get ready to roll out (hilariously everyone from fast food employees, to teachers, & even the mayor have personalized Mecha), but the action has already been settled (off screen) by the time they mobilize. Of course, maybe playing with expectations was the gag in and of itself, but I can't deny I was a little disappointed. Still a very fun time overall though.

I don't watch a ton of movies so its neat that I got to be the cool kid that saw Everything Everywhere All at Once in theaters, during its initial run, mostly out of excitement from the trailer. Almost certainly I've seen an older one, but I'm fairly certain I've not seen another modern Best Picture winner (The Wrestler is probably the movie I've seen that got the closest to one).

@kkslider5552000 Hmm, your comment made me curious so I just had a looksie to see what best Oscar winner films I saw at their initial cinema runs. I saw Everything Everywhere, Birdman, Parasite and The Shape Of Water. The Shape Of Water I specifically remember as it was a Valentine’s Day date movie and there’s nothing like a showing a lass a weird monster movie to pull her!

Oddly I saw all of last years best pictures nominations before the Oscars apart from Coda which won. It still find it weird it won as it was so boringly safe and sentimentally tidy like a TV movie but it’s down to other films failing to win rather than Coda winning with Dune forgetting that movies need an ending, West Side Story was too predictable to win, The Power Of The Dog had Netflix stigma attached to it and Drive My Car and Licorice Pizza were both solid but lacking must see buzz.

@RR529 All Quiet On The Western Front won best foreigner's flick though. I think Tar and The Banshees Of Inisherin not winning anything was a bigger shame, both of their leads gave better performances but Brendan Fraser and Michelle Yeoh had better context to win.

@Rambler Yeah The Whale is rubbish. I'd even argue that Brendan wasn't the standout performance in the film with whatshername from The Menu and Watchmen was better.

In addition to underage shenanigans there’s also Asian mockery shenanigans too in Licorice Pizza. It’s just another indie coming of age dramedy, it’s solid but if you take off Paul Thomas Anderson's name it wouldn’t stand out nearly as much.

I’m having to resort to Pizza as after a really good 4/5 films the selections the nominations get really weak that year as Don't Look Up’s comedy didn't work for me as the satire (whilst valid) has been done to death now and Nightmare Alley which I liked felt very stuck in second gear. I would have put Titane in (which I loved) but it was never gonna be an Oscar movie and The Green Knight is an oddity so I can’t see it being in the running, maybe Flee too but it already overperformed by breaking out of the cartoon award (in your face Shrek and Disney) by being nominated for best foreigner’s film.

I’m assuming anything with greater aspirations like (Everything Everywhere) was held back from being a 2021 film so it could release in 2022 with less worry about covid restrictions affecting turnouts resulting in the weak year.

Edit, also after a quick google search Passing, Annette and The Worst Person In the World came out in 2021 too, I liked all of those but they don’t scream best Oscar movie though.

@jump, yeah, someone over on Push Square corrected me on it's awards wins (it also won cinematography and set design I believe, along with something else). It actually won the most awards behind EEAAO.

Forgot I only came into the show part way in.

Being ill sucks but at least I can binge some movies!

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, I met someone who use to be a mercenary and he said this is the most realistic portrayal of what it is actually like being a mercenary so I gave this a watch with that in mind. It's shocking to realise after seeing this that Deadpool and The Expendables aren't realistic! It's a Michael Bay film so yeah I didn't expect much however it's a surprisingly grounded effort from him, not brilliant yet far from the lows you'd expect given the director.

The Party's Just Beginning, Karen Gillan's directorial debut about a binge drinker, casual sex haver and depressed sardonic 20 something with unprocessed trauma in a rubbish job played by Karen herself. There's nothing ground breaking as there's plenty of those "get yourself together young person as it's time to be an adult" indie films already but it has the right mix of compelling hard truth, humour and bleak energy which made it worth the watch and these movies should always be made as it's not about connecting with everyone but instead connecting with someone.

Knock At The Cabin, I read the book it was based on so I was looking forward to seeing it until I saw M Night was the director. In fairness it's probably the most I've enjoyed a M Night film since Split and the plot twist of there's no plot twist is genius considering he's now infamous for that rubbish. My main takeaway though is Davey Boy Bautista is slowly continuing his ascent to becoming a proper character actor unlike The Rock and casting like this of looking an imposing mutha fudger but playing a soft teacher works nicely.

Top Gun 2: Electric Boogaloo, it's impressively built like an 80s flick even if it's a wart and all 80s movie. The action and nostalgia is all nice but jebus the characters are all paper thin, it's only Val Kilmer with the power of he has cancer in real life too that stands out from the cast which is a shame as there's some proper talent in it like Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm etc. The best bits of the film was noticing things I shouldn't be noticing like the non-naming of the bad guy country so they can sell it internationally and how they were using perspective to hide how short Tom Cruise is in the obligatory topless playing on the beach scene.

Ghost Writer, I didn’t realise this was a Roman Polanski film until after I watched it…bugger. There was lots of great tense dialogue driven scenes but the big revelation at the end just kinda lacked any punch due to how stupidly it was exposed otherwise it’s a decent political thriller taking a jab at Tony Blair which no on should watch because we need to believe in cancel culture!

StarPoint

So I just watched Del Toro’s Pinocchio, and overall I thought it was pretty good. Probably an 8/10 overall. I thought the animation and story were fantastic. I was not expecting it to be as dark as it was, and there’s actually a lot more themes about death and war than I thought there would be. The animation was also stellar, which is to be expected.

The only problems I had with the movie were the humor and the music. I thought many of the jokes were out of place, and the slapstick with Cricket was usually always poorly timed. This movie’s also sort of a musical, and unfortunately, none of the songs were very good or memorable to me. They just kind of take up space and don’t add much overall.

But overall, I really enjoyed it and I’m glad it got recognition at the Oscars. I still think The Last Wish should’ve won, as that was easily the best movie I watched last year. But I can see why the Oscars favored this one instead.

@Rambler Yeah, it's not just he's making films but he's making Hollywood backed films with A list actors and getting nominated for major-major awards. There's been a shift of narrative since he had to flee the country though as before he had good will from his movies, pity from the Charles Manson murders and she was only underage rather than it being forced child sex but with #metoo and more victims coming out it's kinda put a stop to it now. At least with Hollywood as he's banned from the Oscars now (although if he turns up to the Oscars they can arrest him there so they have ruined a perfect trap!) so he seems to be making just French films but their legal age of consent is 13 or at least until very recently though.

Same thing happened with whatshisname who made Jeepers Creepers who still works. He's a registered child sex offender and halfway through making Powder Disney realised they had hired a registered child sex offender to direct kids...

I know people like to put it down to well that’s Hollywood or Disney are grooming kids by including one of those homo-sexuals in the films but just to point out the obvious because some people are thick, the problem is of society at large as a lot of the folk on this very forum watch their underage jiggle cleavage anime which they will happily defend and I’ve been on enough night outs where I’ve seen random guys try to pull young girls without being sure of how exactly young they are.

@jump Young girls or underage girls? I ask because there is a huge difference in the legal system ... well everywhere If they are underage there should NOT be a thing like a "night out" for them.

Other than that, I think all people should start going out with some tools of defense or something like that.

jump

@Zuljaras why shouldn’t teens have night outs? Fun should not be restricted to old farts and it’s an important part of growth so they can learn street smarts and social skills. I’m worried about those 15-18 year olds during the lockdown years will end up as sad shut in incels as they lack the experiences learnt you can only get from real life at that age.

Hmm…I can’t see any sort of issue with everyone in all the pubs, bars and clubs in the world being armed with automatic rifles, samurai swords and chainsaws for defence whilst they are heavily inebriated.

@jump Because the predators are more active in the night hours Day outs also sounds better.

People (parents mostly) need to know the risks of having fun social life. Especially in places that are hunting grounds for perverts (old farts).

Also, in our "modern" society "street smarts" is a completely different thing. And incels are not made by no human interaction, they chose to be mentally disabled.

jump

@Zuljaras Predators tend to be groomers, that vast majority of cases have pre-existing relationships rather than it being like a movie when you walk down a dark alley and a stranger attacks.

I'm scared to ask what you think choosing to be mentally disabled is.

This reminds me of Brass Eye featuring a young pre-Shaun Of The Dead Simon Pegg!

@jump From my point of view incels are violent and hateful because they did not get what they wanted. In their case a successful relationship

So, they act like the other side is in the wrong and that is why they build up hate. In my words they are screwed in the head by their own behavior and twisting reality. Maybe "disabled" was not the right word, I am replacing it with "mentally screwed"!

And I do not think that "not going out/having night outs" is producing incels.
