Top Gun: Maverick

Some really good aerial combat. The callback casting choices were good. There are a few laughs, a little bit of drama (both lighthearted and serious), and a few moments of tension. It all works...except for the moments when Tom Cruise gets emotional. He gets too sensitive too often.

Do I think Pinocchio should ever cry? Nope.

And I think Miles Teller is a hack, but that's my personal bias, I can't stand him.

Overall though, it was a good piece of entertainment. Recommended.

@jump agreed. I feel The World is Not Enough is underappreciated particularly. I definitely recommend trying it again (or for the first time) if you're reading this. Just checked: I have it at 16 on my list (of 25), so that's pretty good.

@magician I still haven't seen Whiplash, but I've been less than impressed by his performances elsewhere. The other one I don't get is Nicholas Hoult. I guess he was fine in Mad Max, but that's it. I watched the newest Charlie's Angels recently, and I was surprised I liked Hoult's performance more than usual. Then I realized it was actually Sam Claflin and I was like oh that explains it. Does active else get them confused?

I've only seen Goldfinger... But I've seen tons of clips of the other ones.

@Gryffin The World is Not Enough is so odd, you’re watching that awesome French Bond girl (I can’t remember her name) and opposite her is the bloody awful Denise Richards. I have a soft spot for Tomorrow Never Dies as Michelle Yeoh was great in it. Although Goldeneye is the only one of his films I’d really rate as good.

I met Nicholas Hoult once, it was around the time he was on Skins but before he did X-Men. I was at a music festival and he was camped next to me, he’s a lightweight drinker but otherwise seemed nice.

Had a random hot take of mine pop up in my head whilst I was having a shower so may as well say it while the iron's hot: I find The Jungle Book to be perhaps one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. I saw it for the first time about 3-4 years ago and I quite literally cannot remember anything about it besides the iconic Baloo dance scene (apart from vividly remembering it feeling like a slog to get through the first half hour at least). I haven't seen the live-action remake but I'm not exactly sure I'd like that either based on my experiences with the original. If you like it though, more power to ya: I wish I could be the same.

I thought the live action remake was pretty good, Christopher Walken as the orangutan was brilliant.

@Fizza @Kermit1 I have a very different experience with Jungle book. It was part of my Childhood and is basically my favorite Disney movie alongside Aristocats. But to each their own of course. I was never a big fan of King of the Lions or Mulan for example so there is that... and i think i never even saw the second Jungle book movie

@Eagly Bobby over at Disney cares more about Ben Franklin then he does Legacy and art.

For crying out loud we're getting a remake for everything! and the original stuff (from Disney) is mediocre as all get out. I hate to come off as negative but this isn't a movie studio anymore it's a factory pumping out movies and merchandise knowing people will buy it because of the past.

Golden Age thinking is a complicated "theory".

edit this guy also kinda ruined the parks by saving money in some areas to make money in more and not in a good way.

@Eagly Not many animated things have caught my eye sadly within the past 5 years.

For the past 3 years I like trying to find weird odd almost forgotten movies and musicians so that they can be remembered and enjoyed. Because in the end this is all entertainment not politics or agendas it's something people put hard work into and cared for, for your enjoyment.

Picking up on some points since I was last in the thread;

I have issues with Deadpool 2. There's a kneejerk reaction to say fudge this film much like in Alien 3 where Newt is dead as they killed off the thing I was most invested in from the previous flick as the first Deadpool was really a romantic comedy dressed up as a superhero movie, they even said so in the film and released it on Valentine's Day. So them killing off the very charming Morena Baccarin (I think she was pregnant when it was filmed from the onset romance she had on Gotham?) leaves a sour taste to me. More so than most rom-com it's not about the chase of two people arguing and then fall in love at the end to live happily every after, Deadpool had a loving relationship living his happy ever after (which is far more romantic to me than simply courting) and his entire motivation was to get back to Morena Baccarin.

I agree with Big Bob at Disney. I know people are keen on cartoons on here and it's going against the trend to hate on Disney but whilst he is generalising he's not wrong in saying most adults do watch movies with real people rather than talking CGI animals.

The idea of movies without any sort of commentary in them sounds like watching mush. Like for example Jurassic Park is a more interesting film as it addresses if they are playing god as at the time genetic engineering and cloning was on the rage rather than just watching people being chased by dinosaurs as seen in all of the sequels which people complain aren't as good as the first. What's really changed is people are celebrating their ignorance and hopping onto zeitgeist outrage to complain about the most stupid things imaginable and want to dismiss something as pOliTicALZ therefore wrong and how dare they rather than just process the films themselves. Juno, a film about a teenage girl that wants an abortion but her mind is changed when she meets a protester so she has the baby, I enjoyed even though I'm pro-choice. Or Demolition Man and Idiocracy two very similar films of someone is frozen and wake up in the future only to see the far left/right nightmare have taken over society I enjoyed both of them and agree with both their core messages despite being opposite ideals.

I should probably throw this out; Bob chapek Disney’s CEO stated adults don’t usually watch animated movies

Have people really become this bad at interpreting speech?

He's not saying adults don't watch animation, he's saying that parents (generally) want to watch something a bit different when the kids aren't around. If you have a kid who's obsessed with Encanto & watches it multiple times a week, you're not likely to watch any animated shows/movies when you finally do get the TV (even if you generally enjoy them).

I haven't followed all the controversies surrounding the CEO, but this one seems like people grasping at straws for something to nitpick at.
