Just because people have randomly brought up Thor Love & Thunder in the last few posts I am just gonna point out it is meant to feel over acted and silly because unlike the first few Thor films Waititi made his films be narrated so the film is seen through the eyes of Thor in Raganarok and Korg in Love & Thunder and told with their quirks. Not that I’m defending it, merely explaining it. I was rather disappointed with how badly it adapted some of Jason Aaron’s awesome Thor run from the comics in the movie and so really cool ideas where half baked in the movie.

@Eagly I remember thinking the girl Ghostbusters movie wasn’t as bad as everyone was saying but I still wasn’t overly keen on. However I did come away thinking Kate McKinnon was fudging awesome to the point even if the movie looks terrible like The Spy Who Dumped Me I would give it a chance because of her involvement.

That's the longest way anyone has ever said "Ghostbusters 2016 in 4K".

Btw 4K DVDs don't exist, you're thinking about 4K Ultra Blu-Rays. 🤓

I will say though, Ghostbusters 2016 has some really nice CGI. Have you seen Afterlife yet though? I haven't but I'm interested in hearing your opinion.

@jump I mean that kinda makes sense but I mean it's just such a bad idea to have a comical character to narrate a story, as much as I love Korg, and also I don't think it should be an excuse on why it's so incredibly mediocre.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy there.

@HotGoomba Thing is all of the Marvel films are like that already, they are filled with too many jokes specifically to undermine/distract from the events happening in the film. It's a way to tone down the action to make it more palatable for mass consumption otherwise you are watching films about people with trauma going out into the world to resolve conflicts with violence.

People seem to like that approach so who am I to complain and it's the ultimate form of blockbuster which was based on Steve Spielberg's template, the much celebrated man who produced the Transformers films.

The amount of bad 80s wannabe movies is staggering.

@Eagly even a little before that some were starting to do these types of movies

Like I just read a plot summary for a fantasy film coming out and it said it was going to "recapture the lo-fi 80s fantasy and yadda yadda". That is honestly the biggest mistake you can make if you want to make a movie similar to something, if I want to watch 80s fantasy I'm going to watch 80s fantasy not a cheap movie that claims to be 80s fantasy with british celebrity voice actors they got for $5 (the film is live action just the animals are voiced).

I watched Halloween 4 again tonight for like the 30th time. I still don't understand why Michael Meyers has no neck and the body of a potato..

Well Strangers Things say different, it rips off the 80s and very few of the viewers would want to watch the 80s movies it rips off.

@Rambler Yeah The Woman King is excellent popcorn entertainment. It's main selling point is the cast of women warriors are all likable and very well acted, you're drawn into rooting and caring for them from the way they support each other plus the productions are cool so it feels like a genuine place. The action is good but a tad too clean, it could with more blood and violence to sell the graphic nature of things but hey ho. Just don't take it seriously for its historical accuracy, it's very Hollywood messy rewriting of history but if you're looking for a film about badass women warriors fighting rapists and slavers then it's a jolly good time. Plus Viola Davis is now an action star.

It's between The Northman and The Woman King as my favourite action movie this year so far, The Woman King was better at making me cheer along with the action but The Northman has a lot of batshiz crazy weirdness mixing up with a brutal nihilist tone which I'd loved.

Just watched Ti West's X and Pearl. I know some people don't agree with this, but I thought the first half of X was so boring, but the payoff was so strong, it about made the film worth it. I thought Pearl, however, was just straight boring. I really don't recommend either in a general sense, but if you are a big Slasher fan, I'd maybe say the second half of X makes wading through the first half worth it. Maybe. Plus, you might end up one of the people who say the first half of X is the best part. And if you do feel that way, you might actually like Pearl for all the reasons I didn't.

Life to the living, death to the dead.

I don't remember the first half of X being that bad myself, it could do with some tightening up though. I can see why someone who expects a slasher flick wouldn't enjoy it, as not only is the film an homage to old timey horror like Texas Chainsaw Massacre but to old timey xxx videos too which have a lot of crossover and ties it's themes out later.

I enjoyed X but I wouldn't overly recommended it besides saying it's alright, I probably will see Pearl although I'm not in a rush to.

Yeah, that was my issue, @Jump. That first half would have been fine, if it wasn't an hour long and if expectations were set differently. This isn't like one of those Slasher movies where stuff only happens in the book ends, X is basically a completely different movie for an hour and then turns into a Slasher in the last 40 odd minutes with basically no escalation, it like he flipped a light switch, and it became another movie. It is a really odd proposition to ask your audience to deal with.

Then again, I thought Sacrament had exactly the same pacing issues (in that it feels very much like two films just sorta stuck onto each other, and rather than blending or building to the shift, there is just a switch flipped and it becomes another film). And I thought House of the Devil was just pretty damn boring all the way until the last like 10 minutes, but also still managed to have some shine due to its rich period detailing, something both X and Pearl have in abundance.

Life to the living, death to the dead.

NintendoByNature

@Rambler such an odd choice after the slender and taller "shape" for the first two films. It's basically Danny devito.

@Eagly I dunno, Prey and Turning Red was pretty awesome. I've not seen Barbarian, The Bob's Burgers Movie or Amsterdam yet but I've heard good things and there's still Avatar to come and every time someone writes James Cameron off the movie ends up as a juggernaut.

@Eagly I really don’t understand the “demographic” argument for Turning Red, it’s a rather universal coming of age story where you go through puberty, arguing with your parents and finding yourself which happens to even non-Canadians, non-girls and non-Asians. As well as it’s art style which subtly channels anime and video games would be more welcomed on a site like this. Despite not being Asian, Canadian or a girl myself I see a group of teenagers trying to go to a gig as more like my teen years than a lot of other films, they just need to change it from a boy band to seeing Slayer or Prodigy instead.

It’s even more strange when people talk about how they can’t relate to this movie but then talk with excitement about films about alcoholic billionaires who wear mecha suits and hang out with spies and giant angry Shreks or sci-fi space wizards who save princesses using their weird cult religion powers.
