@Kermit1 Very nice. The one I went to had five screens, Trolls World Tour was shown on their main theater, with four smaller ones. The one with the least amount of screens had 2, but that one sadly closed down. I read that that one was from the late 70's.

@Sunsy I think it had 5 screens because 2 of the screens were used up for the (at the time) new terminator movie and the other ones were a cheap rom-com and 2 kids films, one of which was planes 2 the movie I went to see there.

@jump Awesome. Didn't know that about A Clockwork Orange being banned, at least the building is being used. There's another theater where I live that was closed down in 2005 (originally opened in the 70's), but the building never got demolished or anything. Funnily enough, rode past it on the way to that old fashioned theater, still surprised the building is just left there abandoned.

@Kermit1 The fact they were showing Planes 2, I'd say that's fairly recent being in the mid-2010's. At least it sounds like it's still around.

@Sunsy When me and my family went down to Georgia this past summer we drove by where it used to be and it's a parking lot now. I'm not shocked since the outside of it looked kinda abandoned.

On another note I'm going to try to see "See How They Run" this weekend, it's only got a 6.8 score last I checked but I still want to go see it.

I've got two cinemas a short cycle ride away and two a short drive away. However, they are all modern. I used to live near one from the 1910s that showed an incredible array of films, saw so much there.

@Jump - wasn't Scala one of those that showed loads of midnight / grindhouse / splatter / exploitation stuff? Bet they got away with quite a few banned films. IIRC, if a film is refused a certificate, your local cinema club can show it, providing that only members of the club are present. Obviously different in Chocolate Orange's case.

That TV show looks incredible, and much more fun than Garth Marenghi!

There was a theatre (a few hours drive away) that for almost 34 years every Friday played Rocky Horror Picture Show. Then the pandemic happened.

@Kermit1 Aww, sorry to hear it closed. I know the abandoned feeling. On the way to see Trolls World Tour at the old theater, we passed an abandoned theater that still sits there. Funnily enough, I went to this particular theater at least once when I was little. It closed in 2005, sat there since.

I think the same theater that showed Trolls is showing the Rocky Horror Picture show this October. They're also going to show the 2018 Grinch movie this December.

Enjoy the movie when you see it!

@Rambler Very nice, it's cool to see some here finding theaters from 1910, I was surprised to find out the one I went to was from 1926 and is still standing there. They also own a drive-in theater, which is cool, since I didn't know one existed where I live. The indoor theater (where I saw Trolls at) and the drive-in are in two different parts of the town.

@Pikki Yeah, it's easy views. It just feels like people were set on hating it just for being a live action adaptation. I've seen more of a positive reception from comments on social media, with a few who didn't like it.

As for the scrapped ending, in the original 1940 movie, the scapped ending idea was Geppetto died, and Pinocchio lives, and Pinocchio cries over Geppetto. This scene is on Disney+ under the extras section of the original 1940 movie if you wish to see the alternate ending in storyboard form. They adopted this ending in the remake, that's why Pinocchio lived after the Monstro scene, unlike the original.

Pinocchio had its problems but calling it the worst live action movie? I can’t really agree with.

@Rambler it was before my time (I first went to Scala to see either Willy Mason or Be Your Own Pet in the 00/10s) but I imagine they were so use to showing these video nasty that they didn't think A Clockwork Orange would be a problem not realising Stan has lawyers.

I got very excited then and thought there was A Clockwork Orange show but Google says no. I did find out there was a German musical of it with music by Die Toten Hosen.

I saw a theatrical version of it when I was a teenager. Droogs all wearing kappa tracksuits and listening to happy hardcore. It was really good and very, well, theatrical, but we all came away feeling uneasy about the female actors playing those parts night after night

@Rambler I'm planning on seeing that too.

The only place that seems to be showing it is the Prince Charles Cinema which is annoying. I saw Jay & Silent Bob Reboot there with a Kevin Smith Q&A too, however the evening showing sold out so I had to go to the extra midnight show. Me and mate decided to go to the pub first however we were drunk way before midnight. Then we drank through the movie and Q&A and left the cinema around 4am. Somehow I still managed to go to work the next day.

That sounds utterly punishing, yet quite apt

Agreed, I loved the movie, but I think it's far from being called the worst. As I mentioned, I've only notice the negative reception from YouTube thumbnails. I don't watch movie YouTubers as I never agree with them anyway, and usually form my own opinion by watching movies. Mostly, I just enjoy watching movies that I like or interest me.

@Sunsy They called it worse then mulan, like ok, It definitely wasn’t that bad but alright. Even mulan wasn’t a total dumpster fire.

@Pikki Definitely, I usually don’t want to assume people go on a hate train but if you actually watch the movie, I mean come on, it actually did a lot of things most live action Disney films don’t.

Finally got round to watching Eastern Promises last night.
I've got a horrible feeling it's the most recent Cronenberg film I've seen, but I'll hopefully see Crimes of the Future soon.

It was good, but not as good as A History of Violence (and obviously not as good as Videodrome, The Brood, Rabid, etc).

As it's dead old, spoilers seem immaterial, so:

The relationship between the two male characters seemed a lot like Tommy and Arthur in Peaky Blinders, which made a lot of sense when I watched the credits!

Sex trafficking is a serious subject and this film wasn't serious enough for it. It made it, for me, an uneven and uneasy film.

Mortensen's character is rock hard, devious and resourceful, but also quite old, so why does he seem to be on the bottom rung? The plot explains it, but why do the gangsters never ask?

Where are the rest of the gangsters? Budget restrictions mean that a feared gang consists of a half a handful of baddies?

It's got those chunky gore effects that seemed to be in Hostel and Midsommar.
That fight in the baths was incredible, but he recovered quite fast!

We're any of the Russian characters actually nice, and actually played by Russians?

The plot device of the diary was great, and played into the theme of appearance and reality, and also helped with the themes of belonging and family. It also gave a voice to the dead, something missing from a lot of films.

Barbarian was a fun night out if you like horror movies. There was one laugh-out-loud sequence that I will remember for a long time.

@Rambler I've seen Eastern Promies at least 3 times now as it's in rotation as one of my xmas films. There's a xmas tree in it so it counts!

I do feel it's a bit unfair for it to be compared to A History of Violence despite it being logical comparison as on it's own it's a good flick even if it's not as good as the other. And yeah, the bath fight was fantastic.

@jump Yes! Makes a contrast with Gremlins (ahem!!!)

I think it can be compared with A History of Violence, even if the obvious things are the main star and production chronology.
Both are about appearance and reality - more so in the former, a bit more oblique in the latter; the ideas of family and belonging; and being outsiders to a community.
Admittedly I've not seen A History or Violence since it was released, so I'm on shaky ground, but I think it covers those things..!
