@Sunsy Wasn't aware Hocus Pocus 2 was out already, me and my sisters have been looking forward to that for ages! We're currently holding off on it until the big night itself but I'm glad to see its still just as great as the original!
@Sunsy Kiki's Delivery Service is marvellous and made me laugh so much. Not even that hard! But it was incredibly easy to appreciate the messages of the film, independence prominently.
Glad to hear something good. Hoping to see it soon, when my friend can get around to it. He's introducing me to some of the Studio Ghibli movies.
@Fizza Yeah, it came out yesterday, mom and I really enjoyed it. There are a few callbacks to the first movie too. Not too much, but you'll notice them while watching the movie. Hope you enjoy it.
I love lazy Sundays where you spend the day doing nothing but watch the telly.
I just tried watching The Greatest Showman but I had to turn it off after 10 mins as the music is incredibly loud but the talking is incredibly quiet so I got fed up with it.
So I ended up watching Passing instead. Starring the amazing Ruth Negga as this magnetic fun girl and the also amazing Tessa Thompson in a more internally conflicted role who both act their chops off. It is about two light black woman who can pass for white and focus on their twisty turny friendship. For better or worse it’s very delicate so it lacks punch but it is a very disquieting think piece without obvious conclusions to either it’s theme or plot. Also it’s directed by Rebeca Hall who is herself mixed race and passing.
I also watched The Lost City which is Sandra Bullock’s last proper film before her hiatus from acting. It like a spiritual successor to Romancing The Stone. It’s fine filled with silly camp fun but a bit forgettable really. I hope she comes back to do a better last film as she is capable of so much better than this!
Next up I’m gonna toss a coin to decide if I’m gonna watch Emily The Criminal where Aubrey Plaza does a rare non-Aubrey Plaza being weird movie (although I do like Aubrey Plaza being weird) or Thoroughbreds about two posh high school girls who are sociopaths.
A, highly speculative, journey behind the stardom of Marylin Monroe, exploring her troubled past & how those around the star used her.
It's a highly difficult film to watch, with some scenes being hard to stomach & other decisions being outright odd (and some will say exploitative), but it's also highly accomplished from a technical standpoint, with some of the most mesmerizing visuals I've seen in some time (I personally enjoyed the way it played with aspect ratios & color).
Trailer:
Raw Deal (Tubi)
Schwarzenegger vehicle that sees him in the role of a small town sheriff who goes undercover in a Chicago Mafia family for a chance to get reinstated back into the FBI. It naturally gets to the point where he straps various firearms to his person & transforms the scenery into swiss cheese.
It's not a great movie, but there's some cool action to be had.
Trailer:
Canadian Bacon (Tubi)
Political satire that sees the president (Alan Alda) trying to start a cold war with Canada in order to mask his poor approval ratings (he can't blame his failures on the Soviets any longer), and a small border town sheriff (played by John Candy) takes the whole situation a bit too seriously.
It's not a classic, but it elicited a few chuckles from me.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
@Ramble I saw Calm With Horses too and yeah it’s bloody brutal. I had a problem with it though as someone described it as the Irish Wild West or something like that but I misunderstood and so I expected a cowboy film. I was very upset there was no cattle herding!
I’ve kinda gone off Barry Keoghan now since he became yet another Joker. On paper he should be great fit it and it’s not his fault but enough with Joker already. Let Batman fight The Condiment King in a movie for a change!
@Kermit1 Although @Ramber can speak for themselves (so sorry if I'm treading on your toes) they were talking more in the sense of execution rather than as a quality.
In a more general sense think of it like Inside Out, there are more emotions than just happy and embracing them allows you to grow and the same applies to movies. As there's more to cinema than comedy or action flicks and people should watch a grim movie once in a while.
On a sorta related note, I saw on twitter the other day the top movies for male and females users on Letterboxd (I personally don't like the site as it's comes off as collecting/tick boxing rather than discussing the movies themselves) and there was a sharp divide. The female section had a lot more films which are more emotionally intelligent and I stopped taking the male list seriously when it had The new Batman on it despite having more films I like on the male list. Also Fight Club was on both the female and male lists which surprised me.
Tip: Vesper, a brutal dystopian sci-fi movie about a 13-year old girl trying to survive in a very harsh world. Tough to watch at times, but absolutely gorgeous. Made with a $5 million budget but it looks better than a lot of $150 million Hollywood productions.
October is my Monster Madness month (inspired by AVGN) so it's nothing but spooky games and horror films all month. I re-watched The Witch and Midsommar this weekend with the girlfriend. Also picked up Halloween Kills and the new Scream on blu-ray.
@Type_Trubbish does it have to be speficly monster movies though? You can argue there's sorta a monster in The Witch but I don't remember anything that can be argued is a monster in Midsommar.
@jump Nope not specifically Monster based, I just call the month Monster Madness because I stole it from the Angry Video Game Nerd who does horror movie reviews every october for me it's just my favourite horror films and usually some new ones I haven't seen before. It doesn't need to technically be a horror either, just something spooky or halloween based. The Crow, Paranorman etc. I do the same with games though I'm taking it easy and starting with Luigi's Mansion 3 this year after pushing myself through Outlast last year hahaha. And also includes a Halloween playlist of horror themed songs
I think I might just re-watch Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal for my "spook" fix. In Canada both The Witch are available to watch, I watched the Nostalgia Critic episode on the original one and they both don't really look that good for me to sit down and spend time watching them.
Also YES finally the "lost footage" will be seen! Hopefully Uncle Buck is next. @Rambler It's a genre and it can be used in all sorts of ways and no matter what the passion always shows (sometimes).
Watched uncharted good film but actors were not great, its sort of a cross between Indiana Jones and the de vinci code. Look forward to next one, if there is one ?😷
