@Kermit1 Yes, you're the one I'm referring to as getting freaked out. I once posted a pic of a the fat guy from Legion and you then had ahem an over reaction to it.
Also Legion is probably the most innovative, beautiful and intelligently made thing from Marvel ever. I'm amazed do many people wont watch it as they prefer the formula of quips, jaunty costumes and hitting the bad guy till the good guy wins MCU stuff.
@Rambler I've seen Santa Sangre pop up on a few 100 best films ever lists so I will get around to it sooner or later. I'm surprised I not seen it on All4 as it's the type of movie I'd expect them to have.
@Jump - it is so much an All4 film, it must be some rights issue.
I think I may have first seen it when it was on the paid version of Film4 way back in the day.
£6 a month for films that cost £15+ on dvd...
Pity I don't have a video player for all those films any more!!!
Mermaids can look like anything, they are fantasy creatures.
Black Panther can look like anything; he's a fictional character. Let's make him white.
Hey, let's make Luke Skywalker black too. Let's make Ash Ketchum a black man too. Why stop there? Let's make Mario a black man, because DIVERSITY sells.
Actually, if you're really going to be diverse, I would rather you make Mario Asian. I want representation. Where's my Chinese Mario? That's racist. lol Are you saying the Chinese and Japanese don't matter as much as black people? Is that why we have a lot of black versions of white princesses, but not Asian variations of Cinderella and Snow White? Which is it, Disney and Hollywood? You can't be leaning one way with your race card without leaning against other races too. It's hypocritical. If you're going to sell diversity to me, at least make it appealing to MY race, sheesh. Because isn't that what it's all about these days? My gender vs. your gender, my race vs. your race. Tribalism packaged in your little childhood media. Hooray!
Oh this again lol, why do people even care. Listen fairy tales can and will be altered, nothing you can do about it. Established IP's within original universes (not derived from fairy tales) are a little different. In the end why do you even give a crap. @Maxenmus You can't tell me you're gonna be like those Rings of Power fans who are like f*** this show it's medieval there shouldn't be black characters. I'm not even someone who pushes for diversity, I don't care either way, a character is a character and there have been other changes to these live action Disney movies that have been much worse than changing someone's skin color.
I actually was shown a video earlier today of little black girls reacting to the trailer, and the fact that she had brown skin, it was very cute.
Edit: With your newest edit, I can acknowledge your side of the argument, and really, a lot of times all this focus on diversity can just push more gaps between races and that's not okay. But with something minor like this little mermaid thing I just... don't think it matters enough. Take a look at things like Eternals... yeesh. You can sometimes really tell when they're just trying to dodge "cancel culture" and be "politically accurate."

Oh, I don't really care, if you bothered at all to read one of my earlier posts on the previous page about a black Cinderella (I'm sure you skipped that and jumped down my throat without context). I didn't even bother watching Rings of Power either because 1) not a Lord of the Rings fan, and 2) I heard the writing sucks. It has nothing to do with race, which is why it's so hilarious that articles are writing that "RACIST TROLLS ARE HATING ON RINGS OF POWER."
It's this little excuse corporations use to defend bad writing. People didn't hate Rings of Power just because of the race-swapping - again, if you bother to read my Cinderella post at all, you'd know that's my point, that race isn't the factor here - people didn't like it because of the cringey Mary Sue Galadriel got turned into.
And as for The Little Mermaid, to be honest with you, I didn't want to talk about it at first, because again, if you bothered at all to read my post about the '90s black Cinderella, you know that race-swapping is rarely my issue with a film. They swapped out an Asian for a white woman in Dr. Strange for god's sake, and I'm Chinese. But even so, it's hilarious to call out the hypocrisy of Disney and these Hollywood studios patting themselves on their back for "celebrating diversity" when it's more like they're profiting off diversity. Again, if they really want to celebrate diversity, where's my Asian Mario? I'm starting to feel left out here that not enough white princesses are replaced with Asians. lol

@Kermit1 Exactly. Most regulars to Disney media, including me, have no problem with it at all. Seriously, when people call out the fact that they're trying for diversity, it's kind of hypocritical. By calling attention to the thing you don't want attention called to, and starting dram, you're just making it worse. Have you ever considered they're aiming to normalize a wider variety of races instead of "diversify." (Let's be honest with this example it's Disney, so the end goal is most definitely to diversify, but you get the gist).

@Maxenmus You're right, I hadn't read that post and apologize for "jumping down your throat" I actually have encountered people who hate on RoP for race swapping though and just find it ridiculous lol. (I actually would watch it if you have Prime though, Galadriel can be a little Mary Sue-y, but that's just one storyline and it's very faithful to the Tolkien-verse. I quite like it as of now. As Argyle of Stranger Things says "Try before you deny!")

As an example, I didn't have a problem at all with The Princess and the Frog, because not only was it a return to traditional animation like Disney used to do, but it featured an original take on an existing fairy tale with a black princess instead of recasting an existing Disney movie character with a different race. You know that they're just virtue-signaling to get people to buy their tickets, right? lol Stop pretending like Disney cares about your diversity.
Edit:
I read a comment that said, "As a ginger, I'm NOT okay with Hollywood erasing gingers from prominent roles. From Jimmie Olson and Wally West to Mary Jane Watson and Little Orphan Annie, show me where I'm wrong?" This is just sad. I would hate it if blondes have their Barbie doll replaced with a brunette or something and people say, "This is the new Barbie now. Your old blonde representation no longer matters."
This is why replacing existing roles with a different race always creates issue - you're erasing someone else's representation instead of creating new ones.
