Sequel to the movie that subverted Disney fairy tale tropes way before it was cool to do so in Once Upon A Time and Frozen. Releasing on Disney+ on November 24th.
Really looking forward to this one as I had a great time with the first film. I'm someone who has long grown out of fairy tales and just Disney animation in general, but I felt that the first Enchanted struck a nice balance between paying tribute to Disney fairy tales while also deconstructing some of the more dated stereotypes in them, so it's one of the few Disney films I would still bother checking out. Plus, I really, really enjoyed the music, something that hasn't happened in Disney films for a long time (I even like the songs more than those in Frozen).
This sequel looks like it will be yet again playing around with the typical fairy tale formula as Giselle makes a fairy tale wish gone wrong, so that should be interesting to see.
In other news, I know that Disney's recent Little Mermaid live action trailer has been getting a lot of flak for casting a black Ariel, but as someone who's usually annoyed by Disney's recent live action remakes, the gender-swap isn't really an issue for me as I enjoyed the '90s Cinderella starring Brandy, a black woman playing a white character. I grew up with that film and I greatly enjoyed the music. Plus, it's definitely one of the most diverse cast I've seen in a Disney film way before it's cool to perform diversity hiring, including having an Asian man as the prince. So the gender-swapping isn't really the issue to be concerned about, but whether the writing would be good, fresh and original or not, instead of repackaging your childhood nostalgia in a live action format without bothering to tell a fresh new story.
To go back to the '90s Cinderella, which was essentially the second remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical of the same name, it felt distinctly different enough with its script and even casting that I felt like it was a more intriguing Cinderella movie than the animated one I was too young to have seen as a kid, but have seen as an adult. I thought that the two different films were distinct from one another, not just in terms of the lazy method of swapping animation for live action, which is what the recent slews of live action remakes have done, but also incorporating new songs even the musical didn't have in a Cinderella film. And I also really love how the evil stepmother has a black daughter too, so you know it's not a race thing. Plus, Bernadette Peters killed it as a pretty sympathetic stepmother who's kinda vain, but you could also see she's jaded by her past romance that made her take it out on Cinderella (she literally said so in one of the songs).
@Rambler just use a vpn to mask your ip as American and you will be able to get on it. There are loads of free ones.
There is a down side where your laptop then goes crazy calling chips French fries, tells you free healthcare is crazy and ask you to pour syrup on your breakfast.
I can’t decide if I hate or like Malignant. It is completely mis-sold as a horror film and it’s too straight to be a silly b-movie despite being a silly b-movie. Still the movie stuffed with wtf energy, I think there was at least 3 scenes where I had to loudly shout wtf at the movie.
@Jump - just read the synopsis of that. Sounds pretty good fun in a sick way! Have you seen Santa Sangre? The plot twist in Malignant reminds me of that film
@Rambler Santa Sangre has been on my to watch list for a while, I never see it pop on my various streaming thingys.
The film is an interesting mess, once the pliot twist happens it has a sharp tonal shift from a serious horror movie you are meant to watch at home in the dark to become a movie you're meant to watch with a crowd for the energy and yucks.
Once you see that thing it's ridiculous, I would post a pic of it but spoilers and I imagine it would freak out a few thread regulars. Just remembered the forum has spolier tags.
That looks like if The Thing was a raver back in the day, gritted teeth and all.
Santa Sangre is amazing. It's loud, brash, gory, violent, and very very strange. It's probably more accessible to than El Topo or The Holy Mountain, but that's in relative terms..!
The first section of it would make a really odd companion piece to that Tim Burton Dumbo (although what happens to the elephant in Santa Sangre is pretty horrible!)
