Theatre chains across the US are going to be holding a "National Cinema Day" this Saturday, where all movie tickets (in all formats), and I think even concessions, will only be $3 each.

No one else in my family will be available so I probably won't get to go see anything (I don't drive, so would have to take cabs each way which would render the cheaper pricing moot), but I figured I'd share the news.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@Kermit1
That Weird Al movie looks like a lot of fun.
Might give it a shot.

I'm going through the Sandler movies I never watched and ranking them all, as one does. Got to Grown Ups today.

Grown Ups
I love how divided everyone is about this movie. If this is your type of humor, I can see Grown Ups being one of your favorite movies. If it's not your type, then watching Grown Ups will be painful for you.

To the movie's credit, it's definitely a comedy. Pretty much every line is a joke. There's just one after another after another, and that's what I want out of my comedies. So kudos there. However, I imagine many would perceive the humor as mean-spirited. The characters are jerks to one another. It's constant. You could call it busting their balls or giving them a hard time, but it's pretty blatantly bullying. In the Grown Ups universe, though, I guess bullying is ok. If you're able to either look past or accept the nastiness of the jokes, you'll probably like the movie. For my part, I was able to accept it and indeed did enjoy my time. It helps that these people are all best friends in real life. I guess it might be different if Will Smith had been invited. You get the feeling that a fair amount of the dialogue is improv and riffing, and most scenes feel like an unrehearsed first shot. The production can feel lazy. But watching in on Netflix, I was cool with that. I might feel differently if I had paid for a theater ticket.

Something I appreciate about Grown Ups is that everyone is constantly laughing. Apparently, everybody is hilarious. It's almost like a laugh track, but within the four walls. But the laughing feels true to life, and I really liked the effect. Even when the jokes didn't land, which was about half the time, I just rolled with it. Other viewers may find this obnoxious, though, and that would be fair.

Honestly, I'm happy I finally watched Grown Ups. There's tons of classic Sandler humor in here, from old people jokes to lecherous kids jokes to physical comedy. And I laughed deservedly at many of the jokes. I continue to love Sandler's delivery and the rest of the cast was pleasant too. Kevin James gave the best performance, in my opinion, and I'm not even a big Kevin James fan; I just think he brought his A game to set.

Next up, I need to rewatch Click, Big Daddy, and Mr. Deeds. And I need to give a first watch to The Cobbler, Grownups 2, and The Longest Yard.

Recently watched The Lighthouse with Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. I appreciate Robert Pattinson's range more with each role he takes on. His role here as a wickie doesn't reach the heights he reached as a desperate brother in Good Time. But the way he handles the homoeroticism of his character makes this worth a watch at least once.

But like say 1995's Seven or 1999's The Sixth Sense, you probably won't watch it again.

Lol. I'll try to make it home alive.

@Magician I watched The Lighthouse once, and I think I enjoyed it, butt I caught maybe 10% of the dialogue, so I've been meaning to watch it again. Have you seen The Witch and The Northman?

@Gryffin I've only caught bits and pieces of The Witch (I've been meaning to watch more since Anya Taylor-Joy is amazing), and haven't seen The Northman yet either.

Has anyone seen Master and Commander, I love it.... We are talking about period films right?

@Magician
The Lighthouse was a great film. I think I would rewatch it if I caught it on TV, but I'm like that with a lot of films. I've not seen his other films, but I will do at some point.
Seven though it was clever when it really was not.

Untitled

@Kermit1 - M&C was great, pity they didn't do any more of them.

More fun period films:
A Field In England
Witchfinder General
The Green Knight

@Magician I've watched Se7en and The Sixth Sense multiple times, personally. Great films don't stop being great once you know a major twist.

The Lighthouse was a pretty wild experience. I was lucky enough to see it in the theater. Utterly unlike anything else I've ever watched. Definitely the best film from that director.

Also, Robert Pattinson just disappears utterly into that role. It's what sold me on him being an actor capable of great, diverse performances.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PC); Unicorn Overlord (NS)

Hmm, they're made a film of Don DeLilio's White Noise. Get to see the Airborne Toxic Event on Netflix.

(Wonder if it'll get flak for being in poor taste?)
