@Rambler yep, one of they key points of Brexit was to get out of legislation which protected workers rights as seen recently with the P&O lay offs where UK staff were sacked so they can hire cheaper foreign workers whilst the EU/French staff at P&O stayed as they can’t sack due then to EU protection laws. But hey-ho erm….fancy blue passports (which are made in Poland lol) for the win!

American seems to be turning a corner though with Starbucks and Amazon have just started getting unions is some locations, hopefully they pay attention long for them to see the benefits before they get distracted with more stupid fluff politics.

A couple movies for me yesterday.

Sucker Punch (Pluto TV) - This was an interesting one. A girl is thrown into an insane asylum with an abusive staff after accidentally killing her sister while trying to save her, and her desires to break out manifest as her going on imaginatively stylish action packed adventures (like taking part in a steampunk version of WWI) that represent her escape attempts. It was a really unique experience & am glad I found it.

Piranha DD (Tubi) - I've heard it was infamously bad, but it's leaving Tubi soon so I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a go. It's absolutely grade A schlock, but it absolutely knows it's terrible & runs with it. From the absolutely gratuitous gore & nudity, to the decidedly B grade CGI, and crazy scenarios (like the exploding cow, genital chomping piranha scene, and the prosthetic shotgun leg), it's not a good movie, but a fun time nonetheless (also, how can anyone dislike a movie that has Dr. Emmet Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd, still playing the role of a wide eyed scientist).

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

It's a form of in media res, but yes, IMHO, it is sometimes used to jazz up a film or episode if the plot or action is lacking.
One episode of CSI: Something or Other that I saw had an opening like that, and the only reason I could see for it was that the the episode was especially poor and this was a ham-fisted way of generating interest.

Thank you for the explanation. I read all about it and learned a lot.

I absolutely love Sucker Punch. One of my favorite movies of all time. There are very very few movies I rewatch, but this is one of them. I've seen it maybe 10 times. I'm glad you appreciated it.

Theatre chains across the US are going to be holding a "National Cinema Day" this Saturday, where all movie tickets (in all formats), and I think even concessions, will only be $3 each.

No one else in my family will be available so I probably won't get to go see anything (I don't drive, so would have to take cabs each way which would render the cheaper pricing moot), but I figured I'd share the news.

I'm going through the Sandler movies I never watched and ranking them all, as one does. Got to Grown Ups today.

Grown Ups
I love how divided everyone is about this movie. If this is your type of humor, I can see Grown Ups being one of your favorite movies. If it's not your type, then watching Grown Ups will be painful for you.

To the movie's credit, it's definitely a comedy. Pretty much every line is a joke. There's just one after another after another, and that's what I want out of my comedies. So kudos there. However, I imagine many would perceive the humor as mean-spirited. The characters are jerks to one another. It's constant. You could call it busting their balls or giving them a hard time, but it's pretty blatantly bullying. In the Grown Ups universe, though, I guess bullying is ok. If you're able to either look past or accept the nastiness of the jokes, you'll probably like the movie. For my part, I was able to accept it and indeed did enjoy my time. It helps that these people are all best friends in real life. I guess it might be different if Will Smith had been invited. You get the feeling that a fair amount of the dialogue is improv and riffing, and most scenes feel like an unrehearsed first shot. The production can feel lazy. But watching in on Netflix, I was cool with that. I might feel differently if I had paid for a theater ticket.

Something I appreciate about Grown Ups is that everyone is constantly laughing. Apparently, everybody is hilarious. It's almost like a laugh track, but within the four walls. But the laughing feels true to life, and I really liked the effect. Even when the jokes didn't land, which was about half the time, I just rolled with it. Other viewers may find this obnoxious, though, and that would be fair.

Honestly, I'm happy I finally watched Grown Ups. There's tons of classic Sandler humor in here, from old people jokes to lecherous kids jokes to physical comedy. And I laughed deservedly at many of the jokes. I continue to love Sandler's delivery and the rest of the cast was pleasant too. Kevin James gave the best performance, in my opinion, and I'm not even a big Kevin James fan; I just think he brought his A game to set.

Next up, I need to rewatch Click, Big Daddy, and Mr. Deeds. And I need to give a first watch to The Cobbler, Grownups 2, and The Longest Yard.

Recently watched The Lighthouse with Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. I appreciate Robert Pattinson's range more with each role he takes on. His role here as a wickie doesn't reach the heights he reached as a desperate brother in Good Time. But the way he handles the homoeroticism of his character makes this worth a watch at least once.

But like say 1995's Seven or 1999's The Sixth Sense, you probably won't watch it again.

@Magician I watched The Lighthouse once, and I think I enjoyed it, butt I caught maybe 10% of the dialogue, so I've been meaning to watch it again. Have you seen The Witch and The Northman?

@Gryffin I've only caught bits and pieces of The Witch (I've been meaning to watch more since Anya Taylor-Joy is amazing), and haven't seen The Northman yet either.

@Magician I've watched Se7en and The Sixth Sense multiple times, personally. Great films don't stop being great once you know a major twist.

The Lighthouse was a pretty wild experience. I was lucky enough to see it in the theater. Utterly unlike anything else I've ever watched. Definitely the best film from that director.

Also, Robert Pattinson just disappears utterly into that role. It's what sold me on him being an actor capable of great, diverse performances.
