@Sunsy, @Snatcher, Amazon owns FreeVee (formerly IMDB TV), so there's quite a bit of overlap in their libraries.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@RR529 Really? I didn’t know that, lol, makes so much sense now!

I went to see a movie last night, came home and jumped into this thread about 25 pages back, expecting to see the film in question getting some coverage, but only one person has mentioned thinking about seeing it, and the rest of it is pretty much just Pixar chatter 🥸

Fwiw, The Good Dinosaur and Toy Story 4 are both fairly recent films that have frogged my throat/had me welling up. I was watching The Good Dinosaur with my daughter, she was probably 5 or 6 at the time. The film got to the particularly touching bit and I was there, trying to hold it together so my lil girl wouldn't see me mushy, and she turned to me with tears in her eyes, saying something about it making her sad, or her eyes watering or something, and seeing her like that for the first time pushed me over the edge - a memorable moment, even if the film overall isn't particularly special in the list of Pixar films.

Anyway... this film I watched last night that I was expecting to see plenty of comments about... Top Gun: Maverick... I finally got to seeing, having only heard good things, seen 5 stars on the poster, and seeing it running at the cinema for week after week, I had reasonably high expectations. And...

...was disappointed. Now, while I am an 80s kid, I'm no Top Gun hardcore fan, I've probably only seen it a few times in my life, but whenever the most recent time was (years rather than months ago), I feel like the film still stood up as a Tom Cruise classic.

Watching Top Gun: Maverick just makes you think, 'I'd rather be watching Top Gun'.

TG:M is just a bit more serious in tone, less of a good time, doesn't have that slickness to it, and most of the good moments tend to be when it is harking back to the original film. Some of the dialogue was particularly patchy to me, and the macguffin aspect of the film was too generic and lacking emotional investment. Then the climax got a bit silly. Just found the plot in general a bit weak.

Visually it's pretty good, though not as omg-amazeballs as the early reviews would have you think. But it does a good job of hiding its visual fx - often CGI still stands out as CGI, but I watched TG:M happily suspending disbelief and not knowing what was a real sequence and what was vfx.

On first viewing... 6.75/10.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

After I watched Toy Story 4, I was disappointed to see the ending that looks like a cliffhanger as it didn't really need the separation between Woody and his friends like that.
I assumed if there will be Toy Story 5, I wanna see Andy grew up become adult, getting married, having a kid that will get the toys from Andy's childhood, Woody and his friends reunite again, living together with Andy's kid. That's how to end the story properly.

No good deed

AGAIN...!!!

@Anti-Matter Woody got to stay with the love of his life, which, I think he deserves, he has been there thick in thin for his owner, and now this new kid doesn’t even play with you, he looked out for her anyway, he can now spend time, making many kids and toys happy, and it was with the person he loves.

@Snatcher
I was wondering, if Pixar will make Toy Story 5, what kind of abandoning way of the toys will be?
Toy Story 2 = garage sale
Toy Story 3 = donation to kindergarten school & Andy's cousin
Toy Story 4 = antique shop (the unwanted toys in sale)
Toy Story 5 = ???

No good deed
Will I do
AGAIN...!!!

@Snatcher Yeah, I mostly agree with what you said. In fact, I remember when Toy Story 4 was announced, I told myself when I first saw the trailer was that the only way they're gonna be able to push the story further than Toy Story 3 is if they have Woody contemplating on a philosophical level a life more than being a toy. It's a good concept on paper, and while I did have my issues with TS4, I do like what they tried to do.

I still rank TS4 the 2nd weakest of the franchise though, just above TS1. Maybe even below TS1.

@Maxenmus 4 Definitely did have its problems, tho I think overall, they made it work. I have no idea where I would place the movie on a list but it would probably be close to your ranking of it, tho It might be the first weakest, because I do like the first toy story because it was different I think, but woody was a jerk so idk.

@Snatcher @RR529 Surprisingly I was going to mention this, but funnily enough, I got reminded IMDB TV existed thanks to my mom watching Judy Justice. I thought FreeVee was a new thing, then I saw an ad for it with Amazon's name attached to it. I forgot about IMDB TV.

Just finished up Lupin the 3rd: Jigen's Gravestone. The first in the so-called "Koike" trilogy of Lupin anime films (named after the guy who directed them), that forgoes the sillier/family friendly vibe of most of the series' other anime adaptations in favor of a more serious tone more similar to that of the original manga.

In this first entry, Jigen (the gang's sharpshooter) has his work cut out for him when he finds himself in the crosshairs of an assassin that's purportedly even a better shot than himself. With a fantastic visual style, some thrilling action set pieces, and a few clever narrative twists I thought it was a blast. It was perhaps a bit shorter than I typically expect from a movie (ran for just about an hour), and despite the narrative ultimately centering around Cold War politics they made it take place in a fictional country (a pet peeve of mine in stories that otherwise take place in the real world, which the Lupin series is admittedly a repeat offender), but I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to getting to the next one.

I just watched Dunkirk. It was chilling how I could see myself in the film. If I were alive back then I would be in the Canadian Army, or French Army helping to fight in the war (my family history is awesome).

The Penguins of Madagascar tonight. Made it dinner and a movie with some homemade steak sandwiches (will probably post a picture of it in the Nintendo Life Cooks thread, it was a good sandwich). I was surprised by this one. I was expecting a rather silly movie about the penguins, I didn't expect a cool mission with some heart in it. I teared up when Private didn't listen to Skipper to help the other penguins return to normal. Also, it was nice how they considered each other family. Also, I loved how Dave's minions all had celebrity puns, lol.

A nice spin-off to Madagascar, though I now have DreamWorks alongside Pixar... both studios are content with making me cry, somehow. Even when the movie doesn't even seem serious.

@Sunsy I saw that in theatres and thought it was pretty good. I thought the twists it took were very fresh and out there. I also remember watching the show on Ytv (google it) and it was very well done.

(I googled Ytv for nostalgia and wow has it changed, one of the hosts is now on ET)

@Kermit1 That's awesome you got to see it in the theater. I'll say, it did surprise me. I remember hearing about the show, didn't know they made a movie about them. Maybe it's something to check out if it's streaming anywhere. Would be fun to dabble into another DreamWorks show.

Edit: Welp, just looked it up, it's on Paramount+ a service I don't have.
