@jump You know Disney is sucking right now when the only truly great movie they released this year is a movie about a red panda and puberty.

And you know they're really, REALLY sucking bad when an ambitious space adventure movie is WORSE than another silly Minion movie.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy there.

Losermagnet

@Solaine i kind of feel like that too. I saw 'The Bob's Burgers Movie', 'Jurassic World: Dominion', and 'Lightyear' recently and they were all good but unremarkable (well maybe Dominion being decent is remarkable). I'm looking forward to 'Nope', 'Three Thousand Years of Longing', and 'Beast'.

@HotGoomba The idea that cinema consist of either Disney films or Minions as the alternative is depressing to me. I think I will go watch Requiem For A Dream now to cheer myself up.

@Solaine
There have been plenty of original movies this year that I liked.
Here's some (not counting franchise films):

  • Turning Red
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once
  • The Black Phone
  • The Sea Beast
  • After Yang
  • Fresh
  • The Northman
  • Better Nate Than Ever
  • Hatching
  • Kimi
  • The Adam Project

Now, for upcoming movies I look forward to (including franchise films):

  • Nope
  • Avatar: The Way of Water
  • Strange World
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • Bullet Train
  • The Gray Man
  • My Father's Dragon
  • The Woman King
  • Amsterdam
  • Bodies Bodies Bodies
  • Black Adam
  • Shazam: Fury of the Gods
  • The Menu
  • The Fabelmans
  • Babylon

@HotGoomba
Spider-Verse is a better movie than The Good Dinosaur, I agree with that. But, I don't know, I enjoyed The Good Dinosaur. It's not one of Pixar's best, far from it, but I liked its message of believing in yourself and Spot the caveboy provided me with laughs and tears.

@HotGoomba I didn't think 'Lightyear' was that bad. I just think Pixar didn't know who the audience was for it. Honestly I think part of the reason it failed was because the last three Pixar movies released straight to Disney+ and it will too soon enough. Why go the theater to see a movie that word-of-mouth says is mediocre when it'll be free soon enough?

'Turning Red' was pretty good though, even if I can't shake the feeling that it's basically a rehash of 'Teen Wolf'.

I agree, I don't think it was that bad, but it was a very mediocre movie compared to the movies released only on Disney+. I'd take Soul any day over Lightyear. But Pixar and Disney definitely struggled figuring out the audience of the movie.

That's definitely why this movie failed. Well, "failed". The fact that they didn't just release Luca and Turning Red in theaters definitely tarnished the excitement of Lightyear.

Also "free".

'Turning Red' was pretty good though, even if I can't shake the feeling that it's basically a rehash of 'Teen Wolf'.

I've never watched Teen Wolf so I would never know that, but definitely can see that being the case.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy there.

@HotGoomba @seaboyluca Thanks, for the feedback and that extensive list of movies. There is really quite a lot of movies there that i have not even heard off and that is awesome. Out of those i know, i thought that Northman was really only impressive in its environments with Testosterone levels that are off the charts and Everything Everywhere at once had a really entertaining first half but less of a good second half to me. Most of the other big movies like Thor or Minons are "fine" for what they are supposed to be but easily forgettable. I liked the Batman movie and my favorite this year was "The innocents" which hasn't been mentioned, probably cause of its horror genre.

@jump I didn't even mean Disney movies, i usually dislike those anyways. I also don't mean arthouse stuff, since that is really great if you know what to look for. I meant bigger movies that go a bit beyond just action and comedy and just scratch at the mainstream niche. Something like Joker, Parasite, Interstellar or three billboards.

@Losermagnet Yup, i mean those movies are fine but they didn't exactly let me go like "Oh wow, i really watched a good movie today!" Its more of a: "yeah fine, i guess i didn't get bored"

"on a scale of 1 to 10, she's an 11, and she'd give herself a 12" ~The Burst, Furi

Losermagnet

@HotGoomba it's uncanny how similar the two are. "Teen exploits family curse that turns them into supernatural animal for popularity and merchandising amongst peers" describes both movies. Turning Red, however, does have the line "has the red peony bloomed?" so it gets the win for me.

Sunsy

@Rambler Yeah, I saw Cars 2 when it was in theaters, and it was the first time I didn't cry at a Pixar movie and had fun with it. I always have fun with Pixar movies, but they always do have that one moment where I cry. Same with DreamWorks movies. Fun, but always has that one moment.

Surprisingly, I never watched Soul. I didn't have Disney+ until earlier this year, and I saw Luca at a friend's house and later bought the Blu-Ray/DVD.

@seaboyluca Definitely, I also liked Brave. Saw it the first time a few weeks ago.

@Solaine From this year, I liked Turning Red and Sonic 2. Haven't seen too many movies from this year, and only been to the theater twice so far. One to see Sonic 2, the other was Trolls World Tour as part of a summer event a local theater is doing (which is an older movie anyway, but still wanted to see it on the big screen). Going to see Thor with a friend soon, but have no opinion on it since I haven't seen it.

@HotGoomba That's fine, if you didn't like, I have no problem. It's been awhile since I've watched it. I think I was in my old place last time I watched it, that long ago. I remember the story being about Arlo conquering his fears, it's been so long.

@Losermagnet I'm actually glad I'm not the only one who thought Teen Wolf while watching Turning Red.

HotGoomba

@Sunsy Strangely enough, I've never cried at a Pixar movie. I got really emotional, but unfortunately none of their movies made me cry, which is definitely just a me thing, but it's really weird because I'm a huge Pixar fan.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy there.

Fizza

I swear the world is conspiring against me to make sure I don't watch Luca. Yesterday I had to help my dad out with some work and today, just as I was about to watch it, my glasses snapped in half the moment I picked them up. You can't make this **** up.

I'll be heading to the opticians tomorrow to see if I can get them fixed so third time's the charm? Maybe? Hopefully? Please?

@seaboyluca I'm feel like I'm cursed honestly. Also, that capitalised Karma brings back bad memories.

@HotGoomba I mean I have an older pair of glasses but the lens quality in them is like trying to look through the front window of your car on a rainy day without windshield wipers.

@Sunsy Oh that's awesome you got those movies in the mail. Enjoy them.

That's cool, sounds like you have a pretty sizeable collection of Disney movies on DVD/blu-ray. While I do generally prefer watching movies in the comfort of my home, that massive screen I've seen in my local theater was really good. That was when I watched Frozen II.

Speaking of Disney films in theatres, the Lion King was apparently the first movie my parents ever took me to, though I was so young I don't remember the trip AT ALL.

I remember seeing The Little Mermaid in a theatre (though I think it was a local theatre showing somewhat older films, as it originally released a couple years before I was born), and I'm fairly confident we seen Lilo & Stitch when it was new as well.

Yeah, The Lion King was definitely the first movie I remember seeing in theaters, my mom took me there when I was really young. I didn't see The Little Mermaid in theaters though, only on VHS. While I do remember the movie itself pretty well, it wasn't one we had in our home back in the day.

@HotGoomba That's surprising since Pixar movies tend to have a lot of emotional moments too.

@Fizza Dear world, let Fizza watch Luca. Please.

Hope you enjoy Luca when you get around to it.

@MarioLover92 Will do, I already seen them, but just wanted to have them. Funnily enough, my mom surprised me with a Panda Mei plushie a few days before the Blu-Ray/DVD came in the mail.

Definitely. Enjoyed both Sonic 2 and Trolls World Tour on the big screen this year. It just feels good to go back to theaters now, especially since the latter was one I wanted to see on the big screen a few years back before DreamWorks decided to release it to Streaming. Still happy about it too.

City Hunter the Movie: Shinjuku Private Eyes.

City Hunter has been one of my favorite personal anime discoveries in recent years, so I made a punt on ordering the newest movie on Blu-Ray and wasn't disappointed. Pretty much a long episode of the old TV series (but with modern animation), but that's no bad thing! Fun movie that calls to mind the action romps of the 80's.

@Sunsy Oh nice! That was cool she gave you that plush.

Awesome to see you're still happy about coming back to theaters. I still have yet to see the Sonic movies...I should give them a watch sometime. Only one I've seen was Sonic OVA as of this post.

Sonic 2 was quite genuinely the craziest theatre I've been in (maybe excluding Endgame and Spider-Man No Way Home) it was a premiere so I'm sure it was filled with other Sonic nerds. I can see people who've never been a sonic fan thinking the movie was okay, but me, being a ginormous fan of SA and SA2 (Adventure series) enjoyed the movie more than really anything else this year.

To whoever mentioned Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, that movie was actually really really good, breath of fresh air after Doctor Strange MULTIVERSE Of Madness where the craziest thing they can think of is "oH YoU gO On rEd"

@MarioLover92 Yeah, I didn't expect it too.

Do it, both Sonic movies are great IMHO. Saw them both in theaters, and I recently rented Sonic 2 on Vudu just to watch it with my mom.
