The same can't be said for the Pinocchio remake by Robert Zemeckis. But that's mostly because I'm not a fan of his recent work. Ever since The Polar Express back in 2004 his directorial efforts have been very underwhelming in my opinion.
Interestingly, there's three Pinocchio projects coming in 2022. The god awful Lionsgate one, the claymated one, and the Disney live-action remake.
@HotGoomba
Not claymation exactly, but stop-motion by Guillermo Del Toro. I'm looking forward to that version because Del Toro is one of my favorite directors. He made The Shape of Water and Pan's Labyrinth among many others.
I thought the Lion King remake was really technically impressive (worth a watch at least once), but yeah, it just doesn't have the soul of the original animated version.

@RR529 These days any company can make a really realistic animated movie. Not saying they're not cool or anything, but it's really not enough anymore to have an animated movie stand out.
Animated movie should have unique artstyles and animation in order to stand out. Spider-Verse, Turning Red, Luca, the upcoming Puss in Boots film, they all have unique or stylized animation.
I want a CGI animated film to do something artsy not realistic for once, look a "real" tree made with CGI. Not look a giant pinky-redish-yellow tree with birds as leaves, and a magic elf made of bronze pipes under it singing the William Tell Overture like a flute.
I watched that Adam Sandler/Netflix basketball film, Hustle, last night. Typical Netflix fare - thoroughly underwhelming. Nobody did anything particularly wrong, it just lacked that emotional punch that, while entirely predictable, is still kinda necessary in a sports flick. Two hours wasted.
@Rambler I've seen Uncut Gems. Thought it had decent intensity and was interesting enough, but I found the ending to be quite unsatisfying and rendered the whole film kinda a pointless watch. Not one I'd recommend to others.
Happy Gilmore though. That's a classic.
@HotGoomba I've not seen Grown Ups from start to finish, but I recall stumbling across it one night so kept it on, assuming there had to be a few gags in there I'd appreciate, but I seem to remember just finding it devoid of any merit at all. I am not a tough crowd when it comes to comedy, but Grown Ups didn't ever even seem to reach mediocre. Glad you enjoy it though.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@jump Your joy-con really drifts towards McConaughey eh?
I suspect you're joking, but for the benefit of the audience, I never said I won't watch McConaughey, just that nothing's ever particularly drawn me towards his work - our stars just haven't quite aligned.

@RR529 I'd that the climactic Godzilla fight was the weakest scene in the movie. That's almost always the case, somehow. These movies try to go big or go home with $100 million action finales, and more often than not they just go home.
Not Disney movies but Dora the explorer live action movie was really bad and cringey.
I put a facepalm when Dora started to sing toilet song and digging a hole for poo. 🤦♂️
@Gryffin
I noticed you write reviews on Letterboxd. I've often thought about doing the same but I'm not sure its community is friendly enough. Seems to me the reviews that often get the most attention are only 1 or 2 sentences long. And the reactions I've read on some reviews aren't always the most pleasant.
How has your experience on Letterboxd been?
@Tremblucay fair question. I'd also read that in the occasional review that Letterboxd is toxic, etc. That's not my experience, but part of that is how I choose to engage with the site. Using social media healthily is honestly a skill. I've been using the internet since like 1999, so I've had lots of time to understand internet culture and the dangers of social media engagement. I don't use the site in a way that causes grief, for me or others. I follow people who respect, we always have cordial exchanges in the comments. The top rated reviews tend to be short, but that's ok because they're a quick read and almost always a really solid joke. I also don't see Letterboxd as traditional social media. It doesn't really reward toxic behavior and dog piling to the degree that Twitter and Reddit do. You can also set comments to be "friends only" to avoid flame wars. The general rules of internet use haven't changed much since the heyday of forums and irc chat. Don't feed the trolls. Speak with people who are respectful and ignore those who aren't. What the new generation of internet users don't realize is that you're words or arguments or opinion aren't going to change anyone. Conversing hostilely is throwing your energy into an emotional black hole. Everybody loses. The internet is a better place when people approach it as live and let live. My favorite socal media site, if you can call it that, is YouTube. I know there are dark corners of the site too, but I watch the channels I like, and the other people who watch those channels do so because they like them too. So the YouTube comments I read are always either praise, or informative, or inside jokes. Approach Letterboxd with a mindset of curiosity, discovery, and appreciation. Don't try to become famous by being inflammatory, don't judge others for their opinion or experience, and don't become defensive if you're attacked. I've learned so much from Letterboxd and have discovered my favorite movies of all time (so far), and I've had illuminating conversations with other users that were arrived upon through goodwill, like the user who made an excellent comment on my Attack of the Clones review last week. If you like finding new movies and talking about movies cordially, I really do recommend it.
@Gryffin
Thanks for the reply. I'm not exactly a newbie on the internet, but I'm always careful of social media channels. I'm not the most stable person as I suffer from depressions and anxieties quite often and get easily triggered.
You're absolutely correct in not getting into arguments online. Disagreement is fine but once they start scolding or swearing, I quickly delete those comments and/or block those users.
By the way, I try to always be civil myself. I will defend my position if necessary but I'll never resort to namecalling. Movies, just like video games, are entirely subjective anyway, but sadly some people don't seem to understand that.
I feel very safe here on Nintendo Life, I love this community, but a big reason for that is it's relatively small. Letterboxd is a much bigger place and I am not sure I'd be able to feel comfortable there. I'm going to think about it some more.
@gcunit I’m of course I’m not joking, Adam Sandler is no laughing matter!
@Gryffin I was pleasantly surprised by Dora too. On paper it sounds like a garbage family film but the girl playing Dora gave an earnest wide performance that kept you from hating it.
I actually enjoyed myself. I could maybe see this as a bit boring for really young kids (in fact the family seated in front of us left during the climax as their kids started getting restless & jumping around on the seats), as it's more of a played straight action sci-fi film that happens to be family friendly (with some humor), rather than a kid's sci-fi film. If you like deep space sci-fi (like I do) it's definitely worth a watch.
However, there was probably no reason to make this a "Buzz Lightyear" movie (it practically has no ties to Toy Story, other than an opening blurb mentioning this as Andy's favorite movie of 1995, and one or two catch phrases), they don't even bother to make it feel retro (in a 90's sense) in any capacity, and it's a modern film through & through. So yeah, if you're wanting to watch this as a Toy Story fan, that's probably not the right mindset to go in with (and probably why the film isn't playing well).
As for the 3D experience I thought it was fantastic. Maybe not quite as trippy as Multiverse of Madness, but the effect was used strongly throughout, and was certainly a better 3D experience than Jurassic World Dominion.
