Certain games are shunned and disliked by the majority of a community. Name some games in this thread that a lot of people (online or in person) just don’t like or hate, but you think aren’t actually as bad as people say they are.

I know I have said this 100 times but sonic unleashed just is not as bad as people say it is, the combat was just fine, and the main thing I hear people criticize it for is that the werhog was cheesy, which who gives a darn if they did the execution well, they were really creative with the combat and I think the day time stages is one of the best examples of the boost mechanic, and if it’s used right it can work really well.

Unbox: Newbie's Adventure is a bad 3D platformer, but a good collectathon.

Blair Witch is a bad horror game, but a good walking simulator.

Gear Club Unlimited 2 is a bad simulation / arcade racer, but a good time-attack racer.

The Silvercase 2425 is a bad adventure game, but a good visual novel.

I liked telltales game of thrones quite a bit actually, sure as per usual, most choices didn't matter. But i still thought it was a fun experience for somebody having not read or watched the game of throne series yet

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis on GBA. Really just a Sonic 1 port to GBA, hated because of its framerate problems. Technical problems aside, I just loved having Sonic 1 on the go long before the DS collection, 3DS and Switch ports, and the incredible mobile port happened.

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, has its problems, despite them, I still enjoyed the game and will play it from time to time.

@Snatcher I may have played the Wii version, but boy I did love Sonic Unleashed. Funnily enough, Sonic is the only series I could think of where games others hated I actually liked.

@Sunsy Same actually, the only one I think I really hated was forces, I just couldn’t stand the level design, other then that, I love sonic, and frontiers finally gave him the footing he so desperately needed to run!

@Snatcher Meanwhile, I did enjoy Forces (funnily enough, this sticks to this topic, lol). Sonic Frontiers is fantastic, I've been loving it each time I play.

@Snatcher tbf Unleashed is largely adored amongst Sonic fans these days. It's just critical reception that was awful.

I actually enjoyed Sonic Chronicles for what it was, including the battle system. And ngl, the ending was pretty hilarious.

Star Fox Zero is not any worse than the majority of Star Fox games.

Enter the Matrix IS bad, but in a sometimes pretty fun way.

Yoshi's Story is really good for what it is if you can deal with the weird, out of control jumping.

Sticker Star would just be another very flawed JRPG (or pseudo-JRPG) if it wasn't an obnoxiously disappointing follow up to Paper Mario. There is a fun game underneath all the horribly dumb and misguided game design ideas. I mean, Other M immediately became a more tolerable game when they started making Metroid games again and I feel kinda bad for giving up on Nuts and Bolts so soon despite how infuriating it was as a Banjo game(even if I think its not noted enough that previews just lied to people and said that despite the vehicles that the game would still feel like a Banjo game).

Part of me wants to disagree with even this faint praise after all this time, but I can't bring myself to say its any worse than Contact or YIIK, and I didn't hate those games despite having reasons to.

@Sunsy I hope the dlc is good.

@Buizel These days true, but for a wile people were hating on the game for a long time before that I feel like. But nowadays like you said that’s not really the case.

Definitely Calico. I get it, the game is an absolute buggy mess and it gets repetative. But some people like to play games that you can play after a long day to relax. Like, sure, sometimes your cat will go berserk and play across the map. But it's just so relaxing and gives you a sense of peace to just run a cat cafe.

I know that it's an inherently bad game, but my brother and I loved Super Pitfall on the NES growing up. Getting the gold, floating around on the balloon. It was awesome when we finally managed to beat it.

Yoshi's Story is a fun, little game with some undeniable charm.

Donkey Kong Country 3 is underrated. I actually like it even more than 2, though I still like the original the most. It nails its northern, mountainous atmosphere, it has some clever level ideas, it has actual underwater levels, and I don't have to pay Funky Kong or beat a boss again to travel between worlds like in 2. Kiddy Kong doesn't bother me at all.

Donkey Kong 64 seems to have a love/hate relationship among people but the collectathon just doesn't bug me like it does others and I'm hopeful for its eventual inclusion in the N64 NSO collection.

I get that it's no Wario Land but I love Wario World and miss it dearly. It's too short, but very sweet with its crazy cartoon violence and snazzy soundtrack that captures the spirit of Wario perfectly, like the theme for Greenhorn Forest. It's special to me because it's my first Wario game and it introduced me to the WarioWare series through its Game Boy Advance cable feature, and I've been a big fan of that series ever since.

On the Zelda theme, I'll go with Skyward Sword and Triforce Heroes. The former isn't universally hated; indeed, there's a significant chunk of us who'd rate it as among the best the series ever had to offer particularly due to its storytelling, dungeon design and sheer level of immersion. Still, you don't have to look far to find bitter complaints about its linearity, repetition, finicky mechanics, the annoyance of Fi and above all, the motion controls.

As for Triforce Heroes,it's basically what Sticker Star is to the Paper Mario franchise; a mechanically solid game but with a bland story in a series that's otherwise very strong on that front. I still think it very good fun if you can get a couple of like-minded players together.

Oh, and the original Metroid for the NES. It often gets held up as being the runt of the litter, with the series only truly coming alive with the SNES and subsequent iterations, but it's the only one of the series outside the Prime games that truly captivated me. Being rock hard and unforgiving just makes you feel better for getting anywhere in it.

The problem with Triforce Heroes is that it suuuuuucks in single player (in ways that Four Swords Adventure didn't) and is still pretty lower tier by the high standards of Zelda otherwise.

Though tbh, I've barely heard people have opinions on the game at all. Which makes sense to me, for those reasons and also for being almost any Nintendo game made after Splatoon but before BOTW. :V
