Topic: DKC Returns: Wii or 3DS?

This was the best category I could think of to put this in, please let me know if there's a better one!

So I love Tropical Freeze, I got it on my Switch. I'm looking into playing the predecessor, DKC Returns. However, I'm not sure of which platform to play it on.

I have a Wii U and a 2DS XL, so I'm wondering if the Wii or 3DS version is better?

Right now I'm leaning more towards the 3DS version because booting up the old Wii U would probably be a hassle. However, I'm worried about the framerate and graphics, are they that bad? (Also, my eyesight is disgusting so I can't really tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps.)

Thanks!

@Mikmoomamimocki The Wii version has co-op and a smoother framerate, while the 3DS version has an easy mode, some more levels, and no motion controls. (You can play the 3DS-exclusive levels on original mode too, btw.) If you're planning on playing it with a friend and you're ok with the motion controls, then get it for the Wii. The only downside with the 3DS version is that "take a break after a while" message that pops up after you play a good few levels. It really depends on what features you're looking for. The framerate on the 3DS version is 30 fps, and the graphics are pretty much identical, just at a lower resolution so it doesn't look too bad to me.

I always played the Wii version, but honestly, I think that the 3DS version is superior. The graphics and performance take a bit of a hit on the 3DS, but the lack of motion controls more than makes up for it. Also, you get some QoL things with the 3DS version as well. Not to say that the Wii version is bad - I've played probably about 50 hours of it - but I do think that the 3DS version is just better overall.

From what I hear the 3ds version is preferable because no forced motion controls.

I have both but if I were to pick one I’d go for the Wii. Still looks great and co op

@MarioLover92
I don't really care about FPS as long as it's like 30. Do you know if it's stable or does it keep dipping under 30? Also, how annoying are the "take a break" messages?

@StarPoint and @iLikeUrAttitude
Thanks for letting me know about those motion controls! Do they really detract from the experience?

@1UP_MARIO
Co-op doesn't really matter to me.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go for the 3DS version because of no motion controls, extra content, and convenience (3DS eShop).

@Mikmoomamimocki No problem. It's a matter of tolerance I guess. You're going to be shaking your wii mote up and down a lot and if that bothers you that much I would just recommend to play the 3ds version.

@Mikmoomamimocki I mean, I don't feel too strongly about motion controls, but after playing Tropical Freeze, shaking the Wiimote like crazy doesn't feel very good. It's definitely down to preference, and I still really enjoy DKCR on the Wii. I just think that overall the 3DS version is a better package.

@Mikmoomamimocki I remember the framerate being stable. Those "take a break" message shows up after every few levels or after a certain amount of time has passed, it thankfully doesn't happen after every level so it's not as bad.

The best version of DKC Returns by far can be had on Dolphin. You can map the motion controls to buttons and play it in a higher resolution, which looks fantastic! There is even a mod that upgrades the HUD elements to a higher resolution.

I wish they would release the Nvidia HD version on Switch.

Best experience is on Dolphin, with the motion mapped to buttons.

But if that’s not an option, I’d say 3DS. It looks good in 3D, and has extra content I believe.

I’ve had the 3DS version for a long time. I like it with no complaints. The 3D can be very strong on max setting, so warning lol

As other's have said, Dolphin, or if you don't have it, do the 3ds.

Hah, i was actually just thinking about the same thing myself. I planned on getting it for either 3ds or wii. Ultimately, I couldn't choose so I went with FE:Awakening instead 😋. Pretty soon I'll grab one of the versions.

It's preferable, especially going into the background and stuff. But if 2DS is what you have, you'll be fine

DKCR plays fine at 30fps, like most games. I enjoyed my time with the 3DS version.

Okay everyone. I'm going to get the 3DS version.
unless someone who's played both comes and has a really good reason for me not to
Thanks again!
