So basically the original creators of the animated tv show Avatar done by Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, reportedly left the netflix live action remake series that's supposively still being in development.
Basically, wanted to have the budget be on the same level of the animated show and possibly above Shyamalan's version of the adaptation. Netflix supposively, wanting the cast a majority of white actors (sound familiar), and wanting to make the character more mature, edgy, and possibly have sex scenes, which obviously the creators weren't fond to since the original was able to be fitting to any demograph.
Hard to say if its gonna top Shyamalan or nowhere be as bad, but still its concerning to see what's going on.
@RainmakerF5, just read the article you linked, and nowhere did it say that Netflix wanted a "Majority" of white actors (they wanted some to be considered, even as just part of open casting sessions, which conflicted with the creators not wanting any white actors at all).
Given the Asian influences on the series I'll agree that making the main cast largely Asian would be in good form (especially if that's what the creators wanted), however I also think it's prudent to remember that the world of Avatar isn't set on Earth (much like Naruto, Dragon Ball, or the Lord of the Rings, it's set in a completely fantasy realm with no connection to the real world, which is a contrast to series like Evangelion, Rurouni Kenshin, or InuYasha, which explicitly take place in alternate versions of reality), so whatever culture(s) the worldbuilding is based on doesn't necessarily have to dictate which ethnicities live within it (i.e. it's based on Asian cultures, but is in no way set anywhere within any part of Asia, at any point in history).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
@RR529 If that were the case, then surely Netflix wouldn't be that stupid in repeating the same mistakes Shyamalan, or Paramount did in getting the backlash of who they casted for the main characters.
Counterpoint: This is a bad idea regardless. This doesn't need to exist, time is being wasted on this.
Hear hear. Utterly pointless to remake this as live action when the original animated series still stands up so well on its own - especially when the previous live action effort was so appalling.
Can’t they do an offshoot set in the Avatar world? Why tell a story that fans (the most likely audience) already know?
I don’t think it really matters as the original cartoon was cultural appropriation to begin with. The story about how the show was created is two white Americans came up with the idea as they were really into yoga at the time so thought something Asian-ish would be cool.
Also aren't live action shows mostly cancelled right now? Just cancel this one too and let the writers make an actual new animated show instead. Objectively better decision.
