Topic: Are more ports of classic Pokémon and spinoff games likely to be re-released?

So we got Pokémon gen 1 and 2 along with Pokémon Snap on virtual console. Since Pokémon Crystal came out on 3DS VC there hasn’t been any more ports (Switch Mystery Dungeon is a remake rather than a port). Is there a good chance we will at some point get re-release of Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (Original GBA version), Fire Red/ Leaf Green and Pokémon Stadium and Colosseum games? I assume the Pokémon VC games sold well but am surprised that we haven’t received more ports after Crystal. I missed out on most of the post Gen 2 games I mentioned. Sure I could play them on older consoles but I prefer to experience them on a modern console.

I'm not sure about a "good chance", but I think after getting Gens 1 and 2, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald are at least possible, if not plausible.

I'd say Fire Red / Leaf Green are also possible, but only if we see RSE first. And even then I'd say unlikely given they're 17-year-old remakes of a 25-year-old game...which to some extent has already been remade on the Switch itself.

I'm personally doubtful that we'll ever see Colosseum or the other Stadium games, however. As for the former: Nintendo already have a rather poor track history of bringing Gamecube games to modern consoles, plus there's the added complication of ensuring its compatible with the ports of RSE. As for the latter? Assuming they keep the core functionality of using your Pokemon from Gens 1 and 2, we'd need (i) these games to be released on the Switch, (ii) compatibility to be resolved here as well. All to see your Pokemon with 3D graphics from 20+ years ago. It just doesn't seem worth it.

The Stadium games could be played without a copy of the GameBoy games - they were just diminished experiences. In theory there's nothing stopping Nintendo adding them to NSO.

What seems like a safer bet is that Black/White get remade as Diamond and Pearl have been. The originals looked very similar to the original Diamond and Pearl after all.

I would love to see Pokemon Ranger come back. Either as ports of the old games or an entirely new entry. They were my favourite spin-offs.

You can't even play those gen 1 and 2 games on Switch, so the answer is probably a no.

Nintendo needs to support the hardware they ran on before any of the games get ported. Right now the only console on NSO that has any Pokemon games is N64. We're probably not going to see any Pokemon games re-released until they start re-releasing GB games.

@DJP- I second this. I'd love to see Ranger come back. I'd also love to see remakes of Explorers of Sky and Time. Those were awesome.

The ones I would like to see include a brand new Pokepark game (the series had so much character, vibrance and life, it didn't deserve to die on the Wii) and a collection of the Rumble games on the eShop for like €30. Those were so much fun and it would be nice to bring the aesthetic of them back (LOW POLY FTW).

Other than that, a new Mystery Dungeon and the original GB games on a potential Game Boy NSO app would be really cool.

@Fizza Unfortunately, I haven't had the honor of playing Poképark, although I've heard it's really good. Perhaps I can play it someday. A new Mystery Dungeon would be great too. I think the newest one is Super Mystery Dungeon right? That and a GBA online would be incredible. And a DS online too. There's a lot of potential will NSO, but it has to be executed correctly. The N64 games run horribly in my experience and I ended up canceling it because I can just play the same games that I bought on Virtual Console on my Wii U. So yeah, I'd love to see GBA and DS online so we can play through games like the old Mystery Dungeons and such. But like I said if they'd have to make sure it came out well.

@salty_mango337 The most recent MD game is actually Mystery Dungeon DX on Switch! Highly recommend it by the way, some of the best story and music in the entire series. Gameplay depends on your taste: I really like it personally but it may not suit your tastes. There's a demo on the eShop if you're curious!

I personally haven't had any issues on NSO (apart from some weird texture glitches in Dr Mario 64 and very sparingly in OoT) but then again, I haven't played any of the games on it before (aside from Mario 64 through 3D All Stars) so maybe I don't have the know-how necessary to give an accurate opinion on it but considering how NES, SNES and MD games run just fine, I wouldn't worry too much about GB/GBA if they were to come. DS could be a bit more problematic because of how much extra stuff is packed into it but I could see it working in the right hands (which may or may not be wishful thinking, who knows).

I think if the 3DS was around for a bit longer, we would have gotten Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald for it.
But I don't think we will get re-releases on Switch.

Nintendo are kinda strange with game preservation. Like it's odd how much of Nintendo's past just isn't available on the Switch. I recognise a lot of their devices had a lot of gimmicks, making it more difficult to port over. However, it seems like the effort would be worth it as it seems like a licence to print money to port across or remake things like classic Pokemon games and make them available on the Switch. BD/SP got pretty middling review scores, but it didn't stop it outselling everything else, because it is Pokemon. But for whatever reason, Nintendo just don't do this on a regular basis, despite clearly having the resources to do so.

I don't think its any other reason other than they think the slow rollout of older titles works.

I mean, there's possibly other weird issues with how Pokemon wants to handle re-releases compared to Nintendo, but even that doesn't matter when Gameboy games haven't been put on NSO at all in the first place.

@Fizza I can't believe I didn't know about Mystery Dungeon DX. Thanks for telling me, I'll definitely check that out.

NSO ran great for me when it came to NES and SNES games, but when I tried out the N64 games they didn't run well and were full of lag and glitches. Maybe it's a problem on my end because I haven't heard anybody else talk about it.

I think GBA and GB games would most likely run well on it. They don't seem like hard games to emulate. And I hope we get them in the future because I would love to revisit old titles from those platforms. The DS, as you said, could pose more of a problem but perhaps if it was handled correctly it could work out.

I have a feeling this is all wishful thinking though, mate. As much as it sucks, we all know how Nintendo is lol. I do however think that GBA and GB games are much more likely to happen than DS. At least within the next few years.

@salty_mango337 It better work lol
The 3DS emulated GBA and GB games, so the Switch should definitely be able to do so.

DS would only work in handheld mode, since you need the touch screen for most of its games.
It would work like it does on the Wii U I assume, where you have both screens on the gamepad.

Think Pokemon Mystery Dungeon might. Likely 2023 or 2024. Cause I mean DX came in 2020. Hopefully they make a new one, I'm a big fan of Mystery Dungeon.
It'll be Switch or a new gen console. DX, in 2020, was in Switch compared to before where there was DS, Wii and 3DS.
Mystery Dungeon's a fan favourite and has spun more than 6 games in 14 years, so, likely another one to come out. Hopefully they don't mess it up like Gates to Infinity and make it rule like Explorers of Sky!
