I've bought several games multiple times over the years. But currently I only have doubles of Va-ll Hall-a and Battle Princess Madelyn for Switch. The original Japanese releases and the LRG copies that came later. I'm insistent on having a complete LRG Switch collection and I like the Japanese versions enough to not let them go.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,247 games (as of April 15th, 2024)

I've never bought two copies of a game. Although, I love Splatoon 2 digital so much that I've been tempted to buy a physical copy. But I want new, and I don't want to spend more than $20, and that doesn't exist.

I think it’s quite easy to have multiple copies of games the longer you play and the more systems you own. I’m most guilty of having multiple copies of the mega drive sonic games or digital copies of Mario titles across different systems, especially with owning the mini consoles:

Sonic 1: original cart, on Mega 6 cart, on sonic compilation cart, Sonic mega collection on GameCube and Mega collection plus on PS2, Wii virtual console, Xbox arcade and the Mega Drive collection on Xbox 360, Classic Collection on DS, 3D classic version on 3DS, the mega drive collection on switch and the SEGA Ages version (because the mega drive collection on switch is terrible with lag).

This obviously goes for Sonic 2 as well. Often it’s simply because it’s exactly the sort of pick up and play game I want on my current system of choice and as much as I love plugging in my old cart from the 90s, some of the recent quality of life additions such as on the AGES and 3D classics versions refresh these classic games.

Other than that, I do have some other doubles but there is usually a pretty good reason for it (number 1 being ‘is it cheap/ on special offer?’):
Streets of Rage trilogy: 1and 2 on original carts, collection on xbox 360 (only way to play the better Japanese version of SOR3), on Mega Drive collection on Xbox 360 and the newer Switch version, 3D classics (3D and portable), plus 2 is on the Mega Drive mini.
Alien Isolation: Xbox 360 originally, Xbox One (runs much smoother in full HD and cost very little), Switch (handheld, just to see how well they managed to get it to work, which is astounding considering the limits of the hardware and it was on offer half price too).
Doom 2016: cheap on Xbox one, Switch for the same reasons as Alien above.
Pikmin 1 on GameCube and the new play control version on Wii (plays differently with motion controls and was about £5 new)
Resident Evil 4: PS2, GameCube, Xbox 360 (HD sort of…), Wii (motion controls and all extras from PS2 version), Switch (proper HD and handheld). Like Sonic, this is one of the best games ever. (Imh all game systems should come with the following games installed as standard: Sonic 1, Doom (og), Resident Evil 4, Tetris (GB), Super Mario 64 and Dishonoured 😁)
Loads that I have gotten free on Xbox 360 through games with gold that I happen to already have on another system, such as Ninja Gaiden 3 (already on Wii U), Darksiders and Darksiders 2 (already had Wii U versions).

I have about 6 Wii U games where I initially bought digital versions as they were on offer and at the time much lower in price than the physical copies. At the end of its life I managed to snag physical copies of all of them for very little to put on the shelf with all the others.

I don’t mind getting a second version of a game if there is a decent upgrade in graphics, extras or convenience.

I should also mention I have a few extra copies of Wii and GameCube games, in event the disc gets scratched and need replacing. Usually, I got these when they were heavily discounted. It's just a handful of favorites like Sonic Mega Collection for example.

Usually if I get an extra of a GBA or DS game, it's to be able to play the multiplayer modes. There are games that do allow one copy for multiplayer, but multiple copies allows for more options.

There are a few but some notable mentions:

  • Bayonetta 1 & 2 on both Wii U and Switch at launch. I've been kinda tempted to get Bayonetta on PC also but I'm content having it on Switch. Although it happens to be on sale on steam right now......
  • Super Mario Kart I seem to gladly buy again every time it comes up as soon as I can. I had it on SNES, Wii VC, Wii U VC, SNES Classic and obviously on NSO. I skipped the New 3DS so didn't pick it up there but at the time I almost picked it up for SNES VC and specifically Super Mario Kart. I also skipped the GBA, wasn't really that into gaming at the time, but almost picked it up for Super Circuit which included all the SNES tracks. And I have Super Circuit on my 3DS from the Ambassador Program
  • Swords and Soldiers..... for some reason I've brought this game 4 times

Almost every time I've bought a game I already own in some form, its because its a really convenient deal. Like I took advantage of those early super cheap Wii U VC releases that were 30 cents each, I have an SNES Classic, Wind Waker HD was a free bonus for buying Mario Kart 8 etc. I don't think those count.

The only exception I can think of is Kirby's Adventure. Between the original and remake I've owned 6 copies of this one game. But the Wii VC and 3DS 3D version are the only times where I was like "let's get this again!" and bought it at a regular price just because. I guess I also did that on Wii VC for Mario 3. Also Balloon Fight since I had it in Animal Crossing? So I guess there's a couple. Yes the start of this paragraph did say there was only one exception. I'm not editing it to change that. You can't make me.

Mario kart 8 deluxe and super mario 3d world, as wii u games and switch ports. MK8 has now set the series' standards sky-high by making EVERYTHING brilliant and 3D world has fantastically chaotic multiplayer and some of my best platforming experiences ever are on the many courses.

Hope you're having a good day.

Xenoblade Chronicles and Mario Kart 8 come to mind. I own all versions of Xenoblade Chronicles: Wii, New Nintendo 3DS and Definitive, and own both Mario Kart 8 on Wii U and the Deluxe release on Switch. Xenoblade Chronicles I would say is my 2nd favorite game overall, most mind blowing game of the Wii generation, and Mario Kart 8 is just about equal to Mario Kart DS as my favorite Mario Kart game.

Pretty much this. It is quite easy to do; I've got multiple copies of Zelda 1 across multiple systems for example (Gamecube [TLOZ: Collector's Edition], Wii [Virtual Console], 3DS [Virtual Console, as part of the Ambassador's Program for free]), but I wouldn't say that that is because I love them per se. I only beat Zelda 1 for the first time earlier this year.

I do own multiple copies across systems where the games have been remade/remastered as well; for example, I own both Ocarina of Time on N64 (as well as twice on Gamecube, hooray Wind Waker and Zelda: Collector's Edition again), and Ocarina of Time 3D on 3DS. It is a significant graphical upgrade with quality of life changes (Iron boots say hello).

I have brought some games multiple times for the same console, though again, not normally because I love the game (although I may love these games). I brought Project X Zone 1 and 2 on 3DS digitally as well as physically because I remember 1 was about to disappear from the eShop and 2 because I really wanted the 3DS Theme (plus it was dirt cheap at the time on the eShop). I also own 3 copies of TLOZ: Triforce Heroes, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. In those cases; the games were dirt cheap from Argos, not to mention, I have multiple 3DS' so I wanted to have the ability to play the games multiplayer in the future should the situation ever arise (especially for Triforce Heroes and Federation Force as I have not enjoyed what I have played of them in single player). Out of those three, I would say I only really loved Smash Bros but again, I didn't buy the extra copies for that reason.

I also own some games multiple times by happy mistake. I have 3 copies of Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer. The first physical copy I got for cheap. The third copy was a digital copy that was pre-installed on a Limited Edition New 3DS XL which I got from Nintendo Store UK with a few games for £130 (really cheap compared to the launch price of the limited edition). But the second copy I got was a physical copy because it was cheap, and I forgot about my first copy. Ooops. This is also the case for Star Fox Adventures on Gamecube, where I completely forgot I already owned a copy; though to be fair, the second copy is a player's choice cover so hooray for slightly alternative covers.

I do love Super Metroid enough to buy multiple copies. I brought it for 30p during the Famicom 30th Anniversary Wii U Virtual Console Trial Campaign (that is a mouthful), and then brought it again for New 3DS because the game is fantastic. If I find a copy in a somewhat decent condition and price for SNES, I will probably buy that as well.

But yeah, most games I own multiple copies of because I either got for free/incredibly cheap, because they were remakes/remasters, or because I am an idiot.

Signature, huh? Where do I sign?

Bayonetta. Despite the janky PS3 port, it was still one of my all-time favorite action games. Then I got it with Bayonetta 2 on Switch, then on PC just to have the best version of this incredible game.

Also own Vanquish on PS3 and PC.

I own two copies of every Fire Emblem game released in the west- one sealed on display and the other open in the collection. And digital copies of all sold digitally on 3DS, Wii U and Switch.

Same for Monster Hunter series.

Same for Xenoblade series.

Multiple copies of Metroid Prime Trilogy, on top of the original releases and the digital version on Wii U.

Tons more but those are the highlights.

I've double-dipped on most of my Wii U library.

I bought Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker three times (Wii U, Switch, 3DS). The Switch version to experience the game again and the 3DS version for the stereoscopic 3D (it also incorporated use of the microphone; a feature omitted from the Switch edition). The subtle differences between the Switch/3DS versions helped to alleviate the monotony of experiencing the game for a second and third time.

I've imported the Japanese expansion edition of Breath of the Wild so I can have a complete version of the game with all updates and DLC on a single cartridge. I'll keep it sealed for the foreseeable future, as it is one of very few games for which I have bought the DLC, and just in case an Australian release comes along later. I'll most likely ditch my base copy one of these days unless I choose to gift it.

I've double dipped on the expansion pass editions of Pokémon Sword/Shield as well, so, I effectively own four copies of the same game (and I'm close to done with Sword after playing Shield). I may hang on to the base cartridges as they contain Version 1.0 (and may be treasured for duplication glitches or the like) and could possibly appreciate in value.

I also intend to grab the Japanese edition of Kuukiyomi which includes all three games on a single cart, mostly as a collector's item. Releases like this only make me more and more reluctant to buy anything from the eShop as most small-scale games that I have bought have been released physically.

I also occasionally double-dip on indies via GOG on PC if I own a physical copy of the Switch version.
