For people new to anime i always suggest shows like Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop , even Attack on Titan is a good started just due its very human regardless of the absurd setting.

^Cowboy bebop is wawesome!!!!!!!!! one of my favorites the only thing I disliked was the end(it was a great end but it was over after that XD).^

For anime newcomers, I'd recommend Cowboy Bebop (due to a very western feel), Dragon Ball Z (due to mainstream status in west), or something like Rurouni Kenshin or InuYasha (shows deeply rooted in Japanese culture, history, & mythology, that won't come off as weird).

I'd recommend for anime newcomers to watch durarara(because it's awesome!) and stay away from ecchi and comedy animes until they get used to watching anime because they tend to make people drop animes for being so different from anything in the west.

I can see InuYasha actually coming off as weird to new comers to anime that have no experience watching these shows whatsoever before.

I used to would have agreed with you on this (and yeah, it may be a bit too rooted in Japanese mythology for an absolute first anime), but compared to the extremely eccentric nature & style of many newer shonen anime (One Piece, Soul Eater, Fairy Tail, and even Bleach), it suddenly seems a lot more grounded (due to it's much more restrained art style, and the fact that many of the show's more fantastical themes don't stray too far away from actual Japanese mythology, unlike newer shows, which use looser & looser interpretations, along with their more eccentric styles).

Just finished up the Uoto Island arc in Genzo Hitogata Kiwa. It was by far the longest arc in the series yet, but I think it was also my favorite. With it's themes of western weaponization/industrialization colliding with the traditional Japanese way of life, it really felt like something you'd see in Rurouni Kenshin.

@CrimsonFire13, yeah, I believe it's going to air on the 31st.

SAO episode 3 I think I should have found lame because they basically introduced cute girl character just so main character can feel bad and angsty but for some reason having it as a one-off episode this early on and the way they presented it so quickly made it really work. Also helps this episode that they seem to so far making this show a "look at parts of this character's life throughout this game" type of story rather than having him sloooowly go through every single part of this game or something. Though more likely it's because the guy is already experienced at this game and thus the early floors would be easy for him and thus, not interesting to watch.

I finished up Genzo Hitogata Kiwa (manga) today! Overall I thought it was pretty good, and if you're into stuff like Rurouni Kenshin or InuYasha (closer to RK though), you'll probably like this.

I agree, but I wish that episode 3 was somehow shoved into the series before episode 2. Both of those episodes give a strong reason for Kirito to consider being a loner, which is established in episode 2 far more than in episode 3. Of course, that wouldn't fix the whole host of other issues, but I'll keep my mouth shut for the purpose of spoilers.

So yesterday I was recommended SOA for the 100th time. I really hope I get my new glasses soon so I can finally watch. Watching anime is a pain without them.

I know exactly how it is, it sucks when glasses break! and SAO is kind of cool, but felt rushed the good part is that the Main Character isn't like the one from accel world.

also, how are you finding the Going Home Club? I was thinking of adding it to the SoL list this season but wasn't sure how much moe would be involved haha

It's a fun little show, but I admit that it can be hit-or-miss with a lot of people. At this point in time, I've been having way more fun with Love Lab.

Hello all, I'm back from three weeks off. Haven't watched much anime these past few weeks.

Anime watching: Mobile Suit Gundam, Lupin III, & Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
Reading: The Golden Compass

I just got done with the third episode of the third season of The World God Only Knows. Not only was I thoroughly entertained, but I just started realizing the horribly sexist undertones. So yeah, I'm going to sit in a corner and question my choices in entertainment.

...following which I will probably go back to watching The World God Only Knows. Mission accomplished?

The show revolves around a dating game-obsessed high school male named Keima. After being kind-of tricked into assisting a demon girl into recapturing "Loose Souls" who hid in distraught high school girls, Keima proceeds to use his vast knowledge of dating games to win the hearts of those girls and release those demons for capture. The relationship that is established each time Keima woos a girl vanishes because of reasons. (Admittedly that last part is changed in season 3, but moving on...)

Some undertones;

  • Are you a distraught woman? A loving man will get rid of your problems.
  • Even though your lover may not love you, it's better they wooed you than not at all. (Keima doesn't care one bit about the relationships he makes.)
  • Women can be easily manipulated by men if those men know the right procedure.

While some of those can be negated by other aspects of the show/characters, those undertones do still exist to a degree.
