that reminds me, I never got how Haruhi is only accessible to otakus. Like I had seen like 2 anime outside of Cartoon Network and Pokemon and the like before I watched Haruhi, and I got into the series just fine and I could reasonably kinda sorta get the joke of these characters, and they were funny if you don't get it (perhaps funnier for some wtf factor). I think what they actually mean is "only accessible to people who aren't pathetically annoyed by weird first episodes" or "only accessible to people who can tolerate weird differences in cultures". And I don't mean to be one of "those" type of anime fans, but the more I think about, the more it comes across as people hating anything they aren't familiar with solely for that reason, which I hate. Especially with the constant talk about how much Cowboy Bebop is a gateway anime because it's not typical anime...like if you think about it, there's some unfortunate implications...or maybe I'm just overthinking it, I dunno.
Eh, I just seen it on YouTube, and decided to jump into it, without knowing what it was (which is how I watch most OVAs & movies on YouTube).
As I mentioned in my mini review that you quoted, while it is a great sci-fi action show (with great production values), it does have an abundance of fan service.

I was watching Soul Eater on T.V in my living room, and my dad comes in with a plate of food and sits down in the sofa next to me and started watching. He said something like this, "this is a strange cartoon", "this doesnt seem like a cartoon for little kids",....he got up to get something from the fridge and said, "what happened to Micky Mouse and Donald Duck, what the hell is this c**p(i dont know if its against the rules to use that word, even though i hate censoring)" It ended and i was planning to watch another episode but i decided not to because he'd keep on complaing.
It saddens me because this just proves that i can't watch anime in front of my parents.
I had to stop watching anime for years because he once saw me watch Naruto on Toonami.

Well, for what it's worth, when someone not familiar with anime thinks of anime, they think of the stuff it's flooded with. Which is young girls with giant eyes and boobs, harem shows, ecchi, giant robots, moe, and the typical shounen show. So it's not really their fault that those implications exist. Anime like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and Death Note break from the norm, forcing people to rethink their judgments, thus reversing their dismissal of an entire medium.
As for Melancholy, yeah, I don't know why people say it's only for Otakus either. My brother loved it and he doesn't watch much.
@CrimsonFire13 That sucks, man. I don't really know what that feels like, because I regularly watch anime with my parents. I don't know if that "proves" you can't watch anime in front of them, though. Maybe it's just a different in tastes? Studio Ghibli films are loved by pretty much everyone from what I can tell.
And yes, you can say "crap" on NLife.
Yeah, parents & anime is an odd topic for me. They knew about stuff like Pokémon & Dragon Ball Z, and I wouldn't be particularly nervous about them catching me watching anything sci-fi or martial arts related, but when it came to stuff that was more magical in nature (like InuYasha or Yu Yu Hakusho), I'd be very careful not to get caught (they never actually voiced their opinions on the matter, but that's probably just because they never knew. What I do know, is that my mom originally didn't wan't me watching/reading Harry Potter, so I figured that same bias would carry over here).
Now I'm 22, so I can watch what I want, but I'm still careful out of habit (& they'd probably be curious as to why I'm watching "cartoons").

yeah, maybe Ghibli and Cowboy Bebop(I truly think my dad would like it) could do the trick, but if i show'd them FMA,or Soul Eater or anything else they'll jst leave
My dad thinks every anime is Pokemon. I was watching Code Geass, the freakin' mechs were fighting, and he asks is that pokemon? lol Actually, I was reading K-on today and he saw the cover and asked is that Yu-Gi-Oh? I laughed, I felt awkward explaining what K-on is to him too.
I wouldn't worry too much about what your parents think/say. It's not like you would want to watch something like Titan with them anyways, lol. Soul Eater does have those fan service-y jokes that would probably make parents awkward anyways.
by the way the scene that he watched was when the keshin was getting out of the skin bag and fusing with his skin back. Also when Mr.Stein gets crazy and slices Medusa.(Probably not the best timing for him to arrive)
Yeah, I like Soul Eater, but I'll admit, it doesn't do anything to address the stereotype that anime is plain weird, because SE is kinda weird.
Of course, the Ghibli films or Cowboy Bebop are perfect gateways for newcomers, but he also probably wouldn't have thought it that too odd, had you been watching something like Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, Ghost in the Shell, or almost any Gundam.
Bleach - Finally, the most drawn out arc in anime history has come to a close. There's generally a feeling of accomplishment, hope, resolution, and peace when a major villain is beaten, but not here. There's just as much pain, sorrow, and foreshadowing going on here, and I felt that they should have given them at least one episode of reflection (especially considering the arc's length).
Naruto - The somewhat dark, political side of the Chunin Exams have been revealed, and with all the players set, it's time for the event to come to a head, in a life & death tournament.
One Piece - With the battle between Luffy & Foxy coming to a conclusion, so does the entirety of the Long Ring Long arc. I'll admit, it was pretty humorous at first, but now I'm glad to be rid of Foxy's grating laugh, and it's now time to see if the show can deliver on the serious side of things, after prooving it's skill at being ludicrously goofy.
Soul Eater - This episode is just what the series needed, after the heavy cloud hanging over past events. That one woman's proposal to the toilet was so random, I never saw it coming, and I think I may have laughed harder than I ever have before at an anime. It was nice seeing the cast wind down with a normal game of basketball, and Spirit's reaction to Maka's request to spend time together provided a nice aftershock of laughter, after the first incident.
Sword Art Online - A really solemn episode on display tonight, with such a surprisingly sad occurrence coinciding with what's supposed to be the most joyous time of the year. I braced myself for the demise of the girl (which they were clearly building up to), but I never would have thought they'd relegate the same fate to her entire team. The art direction really continues to impress, and the only negative I could place on the episode, is that we didn't actually get to see Kirito fight the evil Santa Claus monster.
IGPX - Didn't watch.
Eureka 7 - Well, this certainly crushes G Gundam when it comes to anime showing the saving of the world with the power of love & rainbows. In all seriousness though, while the show left some questions, I still found it to be a fantastic experience, with a sense of hope & brightness not seen enough in today's entertainment, and I couldn't help but smile when Renton & Eureka finally shared their first kiss. It's going to take a lot, especially from a Star Wars cash grab, to fill it's shoes.

I finished reading K-on College! It was fun. Nothing special but it was a fun little read. The art was nice and the jokes were what you'd expect from this manga. The conclusion was abrupt but funny. I can't wait for K-on Highschool in October. This is really one of the few series I don't want to end but it has to.
EDIT: I've been watching Kaiba today. I saw five episodes. This is so weird. The art style is nice though and it's so cool and surreal to see all these worlds.
Just watched episode 1 of the 4 episode Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge OVA series on YouTube!
The OVAs/movies based upon fighting games have generally been good, corny fun, and this looks to be no different. Not quite as good as the two later Fatal Fury films, or Gowcaizer, but it was still really fun, and I can't wait to watch the next installments.
@CrimsonFire13, yeah, I thought The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was great. I haven't saw his other films yet, but I want to.

Hmm..
I haven't read much manga or seen many anime's, but I like:
Fairy Tail (both anime and manga) <- also my favourite
Death Note (both anime and manga)
Sword Art Online (anime)
Ouran High School Host Club (both anime and manga)
Akame ga Kiru (manga)
and Girl's the Wild (manga)
I love both those films. I still need to see Wolf Children. Of the ones I've seen I enjoyed Summer Wars the most, I wanted to watch again right away when I finished it.
@Konata
squid girl is really cool I'm liking it so far!
I'll try maid-sama later as my schedule is getting full these days.
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn
now working at IBM as helpdesk analyst my Backloggery
For people new to anime i always suggest shows like Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop , even Attack on Titan is a good started just due its very human regardless of the absurd setting.
