So I need some Conan experts on this to tell me what to expect from the series. Does it ultimately go somewhere or is it about reading stand alone crime scenes each time?
The story does move forward, albeit usually very slowly.
though good luck if you're reading online scans. Some of the translations in the middle of the series are really bad. (the main reason I always suggest the anime over the manga)
I tried moving over to scanlation's once I read through all of the Case Closed volumes in my sister's library. It was brutal.
I'm positive that the translator's first language was not English. It probably wasn't even their second language, either.
Slow. The first 18 volumes/120 or so episodes (dead serious) were mostly just establishing and developing the core cast of characters with a very rare bit of story development (though it is a series that has brought seemingly unrelated stuff back so there's that). After that it is mostly very slow (but often suspenseful) build-up and information given with an annual "OMG THIS IS AWESOME" story that lasts a few chapters/episodes worth.
While I genuinely love the plot, this is a detective series first.

Thankfully, I do love detective stories/novels like Doyle and Christie. And since I also like anime when the two are combined (L) or in this case, Case Closed it sounds like a good match. Problem is, it'll be my THIRD long running anime I'm trying to watch. (Bleach, One Piece)
They explained the reasoning behind last week's big revalation, and surprisingly, it actually came together quite nicely. I mean, yeah, I'm pretty sure this was a newly formed idea, but he actually makes it seem like it's been planned since the beginning.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
I have to say, my main qualm with Bleach I'd say is it's enormous cast. In the very beginning it's alright, a large amount, but enough for me to keep track of. Once they enter the Soul Society, a billion new characters come along with no introduction, no background, no character development, out of the blue. I mean, really. I've only memorized a handful of the soul reapers thanks to how they stick out, even then sometimes that's just facial recognition. I wonder if Kubo really thought we could take this many characters. Then again, with a manga, it's in your hands, you can go back over things easily, and (to my knowledge) Kubo puts character bios in the back. So I guess it makes sense in the manga, and I'm sure I'll eventually get used to it, but Bleach has such a large cast. It doesn't help that the third ending has multiple ending, showcasing all these Shinigami who I've never seen before, and if I have it was fleeting.
One major turn off for me, not just to Bleach, but for long running shonen anime/manga is all the attacks. Now don't get me wrong, they're cool to watch, but there are SO many, with different names. I haven't gotten to the point in either One Piece or Bleach where I have to worry about those (minus stuff like GUM GUM PINWHEEL!!) but I dread it, simply because I know I'll never remember them. Stuff like large casts, and many attacks annoys me thanks to my memory, I have enough trouble remembering people IRL, but when it's in an anime...
Anime watching: Mobile Suit Gundam, Lupin III, & Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
Reading: The Golden Compass

If you're reading/watching Detective Conan to see how the greater overall plot (Conan's quest to investigate the Black Organization and regain his old body) progresses, you're probably not going to get a whole lot out of it. It's a much more episodic series than most other manga/anime.
The "point" of Detective Conan is really to witness the group of charismatic lead and recurring characters solve a nearly endless series of mind-bending crime mysteries. And it's brilliant at it.
"It's a much more episodic series than most other manga/anime."
Yeah I thought that would the case(no pun intended). I guess I'm just used to different stuff and expecting the wrong thing.
Anyway thanks for the reactions! And lol koreans and chinese!? I better watch the anime then

And you're going to miss those days when you didn't know those characters, once they start hogging the spotlight.

That is a good point. It's one of the reasons I'm a bit cautious when suggesting Conan as I am suggesting they spend an ultimately very large amount of time watching one single series. Yeah, I'd definitely stick with the 2 for now at least (though I wouldn't be surprised if you drop Bleach before its end like a lot of people have).
though for future reference, I do have this list which I just updated for the first time in a year
This is a list of episodes I created specifically to list the episodes people should actually bother watching instead of wasting their time. This covers all the manga material, with a tiny bit of anime only stuff that's there either because of being high quality or interesting.
Oh, Fantasia Doll is from the same creator of Code Geass? O.o I was already interested in it from character design and art but that's exciting. Maybe it'll be somewhat good!
