Well it is Guillermo del Toro... I'm pretty excited for it personally. Knowing Toro it'll be more than just giant robots beating on Kaiju, but it'll have drama and legitimate plot.

That's good to hear and I hope you enjoy it. Heck, if you like it enough, maybe I could recommend you a few Super Robot shows from Japan.

Real Robot. Most pure Super Robot shows aren't to my tastes, but luckily there are plenty of ones that are slightly mixed that are really good, such as Gurren Lagann and Getter Robo Armageddon.

Super Robot shows often play out like an episode of the Power Rangers - Loosely connected plot (most ones I've seen could be easily summed up in 13 episodes...), lots of Monster of the Week stuff, and giant robots that operate more like super heroes, with few if any reasonable restrictions. The biggest difference, however, is that giant pilotable robots are not a commonplace item, but are often limited to a certain group or organization, and are limited in number.

Real Robot Shows are often have a greater emphasis on story and character development, with one episode often leading to the next. The Robots are relatively realistic, operating within reasonable limits set by the show. And of course, the robots are a generally everyday item that are used by multiple groups and organizations, and there can be many of the same types of robots.

Then there are shows that take one or more elements from one or the other. Gurren Lagann, for instance, is a very story-focused Super Robot show, where there are many super robots that operate with no known limits outside of the fighting spirit of the user itself. I usually class these mixes as Super Robot, since there's no official classication as of yet that I know of, and most mixes are still very much Super Robot in their essence. That said, they can be classified either Super or Real Robot, and I probably wouldn't complain.

Gotcha. Are there any serious Super Robot shows?

As for Super Robot shows, I've always had a soft spot for G Gundam.

It was definitely campy, but it was fun.

Pacific Rim seems to be going for an Ultraman/Godzilla vibe, yet much more serious. In a recent interview, Toro stated that ti would be wrong to think of this as an homage in the way Tarantino's films are kung-fu, exploitation, and spaghetti western homages, but to think of this as having only the trappings... Some people liken it to Evangelion, but based on you definition it does seem to be a bit more Super Robot.

I've been reading Air Gear as of late. It has a pretty decent story to it. Though be warned it has eechi in some parts. I enjoy the art and the characters. My favorite being Agito. I also tried watching the anime, but it only has the first 50 episodes. Though I don't know what to try once i'm done. Does anyone know a good actiony manga?

I have now changed my avatar, to the cutest anime character ever. Tsumiki from Acchi Kocchi. I seriously love her to death, she is such a cutie .
I ended up rewatching it, and I really liked it more the second time round'.

G Gundam is easily the most wacky Gundam series out there.

In this series, Gundam pilots are martial artists, and using special motion tracking technology, their Gundams copy their movements, resulting in over the top giant robot martial arts matches (complete with wacky super attacks that the characters yell out).

Each Gundam pilot represents a country, and are competing in a martial arts tournament (using the entire Earth as a battlefield) to see which country earns the right to rule the world. The Gundams themselves aren't commonplace as each country only has one, and they have unrealistic, eccentric designs (Spain's looks like a giant matador, and the U.S.A.'s like a cross between a boxer & a football player, for example).

Oh, it's not. It was caught up in the big martial arts era (with Dragon Ball Z, & Yu Yu Hakusho being big, and stuff like Street Fighter & Fatal Fury taking off).

Heck, the main character's Gundam even has a "super mode", which is a play on DBZ's Super Sayain (complete with gold aura).

It's a brand new show, only 4 eps out. It's utterly fantastic, you NEED to watch it.
