Does anyone know of any anime that have a more traditional Japanese flavor, like Rurouni Kenshin, InuYasha (Final Act), Kekkaishi, Tenchi Muyo, or the Ninja Scroll movie?

I tend to like anime more when they create it's world around traditional Japanese culture, but most anime I've seen (especially newer stuff) are based around western fantasy or culture.

I know there are plenty like that...I just can't name any off the top of my head.:/

There's plenty of anime that at least have plenty of japanese culture and mythology and what not despite being in a fictional setting.

Samurai 7 might be good, too. Even with the steampunk slant, it's very Japanese. Also, I'm sure you haven't seen Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal yet. More people need to watch that. Sakura Wars is pretty good, for a show based on a game. There's another samurai anime on Hulu that's pretty good that I can't quite name for some reason.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I might try out Mushishi, and if I ever find the time to watch a movie, I'll check out Princess Mononoke.

Also should mention that I've also seen Moribito, Samurai Champloo, and Spirited Away.

As for Trust & Betrayal, is that the OVA that preceeds the anime, or the one that takes place after the fact?

I've seen the one that takes place beforehand. Thanks for the suggestions.

Ah, before. If you've seen it already...well, watch it again, it's even better the second time around, since you'll understand the beginning more.

@RR529 I'll also recommend Pom Poko; it doesn't have the feudal setting you seem to be looking for, but it is still strongly influenced by traditional Japanese folklore.

And I'll second the Samurai 7 suggestion too; it's also not strictly "traditional", but it fuses a feudal Japanese setting with very prominent sci-fi, steampunk elements. Plus, it's a pretty good show.

I'll look into that one too then. As long as it has the influence, I should be good (I absolutely loved Tenchi, for instance).

Still, I'd be ecstatic to find something that gives off the same vibe as InuYasha. I've watched a lot of anime, but I've seen nothing else quite like it (Kekkaishi was almost there, but it was just excecuted terribly. felt mostly generic, and left a lot unsolved). For some reason, Tenchi comes incredibly close as well (InuYasha and Tenchi feel like opposite sides of the same coin to me, and seem like they'd make good crossover material).

I haven't actually seen the anime or read the manga myself, but I've heard for years that Fushigi Yugi was basically InuYasha before there was InuYasha. Maybe you'll want to give that a look?

Thanks! Now it looks like I have yet another show to look into. EDIT: It appears it's a shojo (looked up the basic premise on Wikipedia). Never watched a shojo series before...

...but I guess it can't hurt to give it a try.
