Objection

I'm gonna start this off a little negatively but keep in mind this is merely my opinion. I despise Naruto (anime version): it is one the worst animes I have seen in the last few years, what with the DBZ-slow pace, poor animation, and worse dub. It's important to note that I think the manga is well-done, so it's not that they couldn't have done a better job. Shippuden is supposedly better, but it's a sign that people make a big deal of that when it takes 200+ episodes to get there.
Anime I like: Ghost in the Shell (anything), Death Note, Code Geass (Season 1), Welcome to the NHK, YuYu Hakusho, AFRO SAMURAI, and anything by Miyazaki that isn't Spirited Away.

edit 4/30/12: Title change to include manga

Yeah, basically you did. I saw Howl's and it was pretty good. My favorite Miyazaki films are Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa.

Desert Punk is a decent comedy series. The last 4 episodes are noticably different in tone and story which I didn't care for, but my friend liked that part the best IIRC. It's definately for mature audiences though with lots of sex jokes/refs/etc.

I don't really get the appeal of anime, but I did like Howl's Moving Castle and rank it up there with Land Before Time for best children's (or "all ages," if you prefer) movie I've ever seen. I would like to give anime a better chance because there's nothing wrong with the animation style necessarily, but the themes generally are too over-the-top. Giant robots are overdone (though I rented Evangelion, and that decent). And superheroes never interested me (yes, I know that's weird).

I'll have to check out Howl's. I did enjoy Spirited Away and I have a number of other Miyazaki films. I used to be bigger into anime than I am; mostly I just spend more money on games so more passive media purchases have suffered. I also really enjoy Serial Experiments Lain. It's probably the most odd and interesting thing I've seen in anime -- very David Lynch. Think I'll have to watch that one again soon...

One Piece is easily the best Shonen Anime. It's story is very consistent, it's characters are very diverse, and it's fights are on an EPIC level. The only problems with it are those ear raping english dubs.

Adam, here are some animes that do some new things and succeed: Welcome to the NHK, Death Note and Ghost in the Shell. Here are some that take familar ideas (like mechs) and make them new and cool again: Code Geass, Desert Punk and Akira (which is good even if it is overrated). Since you liked Howl's I definately recommend seeing the Miyazaki films I listed above.

I saw Spirited Away and couldn't really get into it. Castle in the Sky was decent. I haven't seen the ones you listed, though. I saw a trailer for some new Studio Ghibli movie recently that looked good, though it didn't list a North American date or name. Is My Neighbor Totoro good? I'm interested solely because of Shigesato Itoi's involvement (creator of Earthbound/Mother, voiced one of the characters).

I also started to watch Ghost in the Shell (not sure if it was a movie or TV show or what) and thought it was too goofy. That is the one with the naked woman robot thing, right? Too over the top for me.

A friend has already recommended Death Note, but it's not at Blockbuster. I'll be glad to check out any of the other titles you listed if I see them for rent someday, though it's doubtful since I rarely see anything new in the anime section (it's small, so I always give it a quick glance). Thanks!

As noted before, I didn't care for Spirited Away either! I thought Totoro was decent. It's a little looser in plot than some of his other works, but still watchable and entertaining. There's 2 upcoming Ghibli films that come to mind from what you say: one is based on a novel and due to SCI-FI (or now apparently SCY-FY) channel's deal with a related series, it couldn't come out for 3 years (this being the first year it might come out) and another new film that DIsney is bringing to the US this summer. WIkipedia it for more info. Yes, the other film you saw was GITS...if you didn't like it, try the series (GITS: Stand Alone Complex)

Damn, how could I forget Cowboy Bebop, one of my all time favs? Oh, it's because my cluttered shelves covered it when I was taking a quick look to list them off! Tales of Earthsea was the one I was talking about that may finally come out in the US this year (Europe already has it.) Grave of the Fireflies (technically not a Ghibli film though they were involved) is good but really sad.

Yeah, GOTF was quite sad. Still amazing though. The Live action version was just too different from the original film though

Tokyo Godfathers was decent. It had too much of a fantasy-esque ending for what was otherwise a pretty realistic movie (IMHO) but I thought it covered tough topics like suicide, homosexuality and child abandonment, among others well, given the goofy context.

The anime series I'm currently watching are One Piece (personal favourite), Full metal alchemist 2, Bleach, Gintama & Eden of the east.
Eden of the east is easily the best new spring season anime with great plot, characters and animation.
