I just wanted to provide some feedback here as a user of this site. I think it's a great site, I love going here for Nintendo news and discussing video games, but if I had one big issue, it is simply the attitude that the people running the forums have about topics related to a specific game. It seems like every time I try to have a simple topic about a question that I got regarding a game, it always gets shut down by some authority figure you got around here who tells me "this should go in the thread for the game" or "in the recommendation thread" which is kind of a ridiculous request to be honest, and one that I never have any interest in.
The problem is simple. Far to often these generalized topic threads will result with my question going on the tail end of a massive multi-page thread where I will be completely ignored and never get the answers that I am seeking. There is also the fact that often the "thread for the game" is buried under pages and pages of threads where I would have never even known it existed without the search feature, and if I ever post anything on that, it is the same situation where it will go on the very end of a massive thread that will get bumped and ignored by the rest of the community, assuming it is just some random comment or something as opposed to the question that I had seeking help.
So in other words, your attitude of wanting to consolidate absolutely everything related to a game into one or two massive threads results with my needs and desires being completely dismissed in most cases, which results with your forums coming off as being rather useless if I did exactly what you wanted. Now I could understand how you wouldn't want to have a bunch of threads about the same topic spamming up your forums, but if it is just a simple question about a game that hasn't been discussed for months, I really don't see the problem.
From my own perspective, it's not that we see such threads as spam, but that they introduce a likelihood of duplicated discussion and set a precedent that then becomes hard to manage.
Take your Pokémon thread as an example. Let that run and then the next user who comes along with a question about the same game, do they post in your thread because it's most recent, start their own thread, revert to the older 'main thread'... Then along comes someone else just browsing Pokémon threads, and they're confronted with multiple threads all talking about the same thing.
So it's about striking a balance. Almost anyone (myself included) who's used these forums for any length of time, will have had a perfectly innocent and well intended thread closed down and pointed elsewhere. I know it's annoying when you've got a straight forward question you just want some quick views on for it to be shut down. But it's managed like this for the benefit of the wider user base, at the cost of the individual on occasion.
It's an issue I regularly question whether we're doing it the best way or not, but from a mod's perspective at least I think it's better than the alternative, otherwise I'd have suggested an alternative approach myself.
Necro posting, on the other hand, I don't have a problem with, provided the comment has value and isn't just bumping the thread for the shiggles.
@gcunit Well thank you for taking the time to read my comments about this and explaining it the way you have. I wasn't expecting you to change your policy, I just felt like this was something that was worthwhile for me to acknowledge and give my two cents about. Taking what you had to say into consideration, I can sympathize with your desires as you seemed to sympathize with mine. It seems like the current policy is a compromise, but like you said I guess like it happens to everyone. I can't say that I have thought of a better alternative myself, but it is nice to know that you are open to criticism like this. I am just glad that you seem to be more concerned with keeping order than bossing users around, it is part of the reason why I keep coming back.
@JayJ I’ll point out from my own experience that even if you post something in an existing thread for a game that may not have had an active post in a bit, there’s enough helpful users that will see it and try to answer. I know I visit both “New Topics” and “All Topics” every couple hours myself. There’s at least 12 regular users I can think of that lurk frequently enough that you shouldn’t have to worry about someone not checking out a new post

@HobbitGamer@ReaderRagfish Thanks for sharing your experiences, it is good to know how this isn't one of those sites where everyone ignores old topics. I just thought it would be nice to make new topics if something hasn't been discussed for a while, but if everyone here takes it seriously, I guess like it hard to complain.
