This is totally awesome, it like Korg-DS, except you dont have to make instruments and comes with 300 instruments and a great amount of drumkits to choose from! Also 64 pattern loops now! This beats Rytmik hands down (even though i am still going to buy the rock edition when it gets released in the US)

I wish I were a musician. I'd snap this right up.

Wouldn't it be cool if someone would teach an "introduction to music theory" class using this program as a prerequisite? Heck, I'd be all over that.

They have a new feature with the Kaoss Pad, It allows automatic beats to be made and control with your stylus, and also make automatic chords as well. This is an extensive feature from the old version. But it looks like there pushing the "you dont need musical knowledge to make some interesting music". Which is true. But with this and a learning the basics of music composing (google is your best friend) you can learn music faster than any school these days.

Figuring it'll be a year or two before M01 is released in North America, I decided to order Korg DS-10 Plus for $15.12 (delivered). This is an extremely inexpensive way to see if I can learn something about music on the Internet. Thanks for the motivation! Unlike an acoustic instrument, I can wear headphones so I don't drive my wife insane.

Yes I love the Korg DS-10 but it model after a synthesizer, which means you'll have to create your own instruments, but the cool thing is you'll learn how knobs and wires work to create sound, you be able to not look at a music machine just as a box with a million knobs buttons and switches. You'll be able to find some instruments to create on you tube with no prob and there is a korg ds-10 website forum, even has a tutorial on voice modulation! Enjoy!

For me, this might be a good time to jump into the KORG-on-DS mini-craze. I've always been interested, but I just haven't gotten the time to pick one of the games up. This definitely looks like the most "Complete" version of them all.

EDIT: I am liable to to sue, blink83. You do realize that, right?

Yes, I'm an armchair synthesizer fan. I have all of Larry Fast's Synergy albums, Wendy Carlos' box set, the Moog DVD and CD, and tons of more recent down-tempo (non-dance) electronica (which is more dub than synth). Empowered with the DS-10 and the Internet, I hope to crawl out of the armchair and get my hands dirty for the first time. It's time to learn.

Edit: I should have pointed out that "...year or two before M01 is released in North America" was pessimistic exaggeration on my part. I sincerely hope it's more like three to six months. Fingers crossed.

Fantabulous! A topic that finally convinced me to register on nl.

Am I excited for M1? YES! The same day I first read about it, I sent a link to Xseed and registered my interest for a localization. I've had two copies of DS-10 and later, bought two DSi's and two copies of DS-10+. M01 looks like a whole new shade of awesome. What has really amped me up over the title in recent weeks have been the new videos that clearly show most or all of the interface in English [as you'd expect the physical hardware of the synth to have been]. There's a good chance I'll import this next week because I'm just not sure it will garner much interest out of Japan. Also, as of now, Play Asia lists it as not DSi-enhanced- i.e., not region-locked.

Welcome aboard, TTGlider! If you import M01, I look forward to your impressions! The DS-10 Plus has DSi-specific features. Is it really possible that the (presumably) more powerful M01 has no need for DSi capabilities? Maybe they've simplified the implementation, thus demanding less from the hardware. Time will tell.

So, basically a MIDI creator or something?...Dunno, if it teaches you how to make music then I might look into it. Are you able to save whatever you make onto the computer or something?

@drex - count me in. I have 2 copies of the DS-10 and I own a single copy of the DS-10+ (3 DS-es...fat, lite, DSi) and will be picking this up as well. I've moved to almost exlusively writing music with mobile-device/handheld software...the restrictions seem to shoehorn my creativity in a way that actually lets me get stuff done as opposed to PC-based "everything under the sun where do you start" programs. Granted, I still make a mod every now and again, but who grew up in the 90s making music and doesn't?

But yeah. Super pumped for this release...I'm a big M1 fan (one of the substantial amount of audio equipment that was stolen out of my first apt. ) This is gonna mop the floor with Rytmik...Not that there's anything particularly wrong with Rytmik...but all the virtual-synth goodness with a broader instrument library is gonna run my life. Any idea if there's planned connectivity with DS-10?

Wait, there are other versions? What are they like? Or should I just wait for this one? This thread better not die, not when you got me somewhat interested, lol.

Didn't see it anywhere on there, but do you think we'll be able to transfer whatever you make onto the computer or something?

That sucks...ah well, I'll keep my fingers crossed, then again I'm terrible at making music, lol.

OK; my copy is on the plane now inbound to the US. It may turn out M01 receives a world wide release and I overpaid by three. Or...

In anticipation I've been fiercely rocking the DS10+! In fact I've been jamming along with some of the M01 videos Detune linked on their blog.

When I ordered from Amazon.co.jp, there was a single review- for 2 stars. Imagine my delight when the Google Translate revealed this low review was because... the game interface is in English! Of course we already knew it had significant English content based on the videos and screenshots - just as the original M1 hardware (and most worldwide Japanese electronics have had for decades) did.

Anyone else have it incoming?

TTGlider

Joeynator3000

Wait, its out already?...Wondering if I should get it or not, or are you talking about an older version? (and does it contain tutorials? lol)

I've been jamming on it all day. The interface is totally in English, the manual totally Japanese. It's actually much simpler than DS-10. The sound quality is awesome through good headphones on my DSis. Well... awesome? What I mean is the variety of patches and damn sincerity with reach they hit their target is just humbling. You can see in the manual credits for a team from Korg, so I see no reason to think these aren't actually some interpolation of the original samples as were also adapted for the VST plugins, etc.

There is definitely no wireless beat sync with the DS-10+ (not a big omission IMHO).

Effects are trimmed down from the M1 to just delay and reverb in M01 and the sound quality of the effects is... well I don't have the hardware M1 to compare so I better not say (they sound yucky mixed any higher than 40% IMHO).

I think polyphony maxes at 13 or 14 voices (a little asterisk appears during playback next to the 'active voices' counter that I think means voices are being truncated). Kaos pad chording is really fun. ! The piano interface is slow as ever and the trusty grid sequencer is where the real work happens. A select / copy / paste function was added to the grid that has my DS-10+ carts jealous.

Of special note to me are the drum kits... some are just monster sick. All the chip tune / faux analog styles are a real hoot.

He's emulated the menu / softkey interface of the M1- for better or worse. At times it would help to have a couple extra soft keys. The interface doesn't have QUITE the level of polish as the DS-10s. But there's also less to do. Basically this is a music tool... period. I was always a little surprised the DS-10 titles scored as well with the general reviewership as they did, and I'm not sure M01 would fare as well as it's more honed and not possessing quite the same level of charm.

Oh, dudes. He did the neatest thing with the Kaos pad. Maybe this has been done before, I don't know (I'm in the dark ages in a lot of respects). There's now a graphic on the Kaos pad area around your stylus as though you're depressing the resistive screen REALLY hard! A lighter area and a shadow. This makes so much difference, for some strange reason. Dig it!

There's no hard maximum for song length. Well there is, but it's determined by number of notes (I'm 95% sure) and that will vary based on your use of of the up-to 8 tracks and polyphony. You have a percentage showing how much 'memory' is free for the current song. A song can have default step lengths and tempos, though each step can have its own length and tempo as well. A brilliant choice was made to include examples of tunes with widely varying tempos (Demo-1, Bonus-2) to break out of the "I'm listening to a tracker synth house genre" mode and achieve something more like a... well Bonus-2 sounds like opening music for bad period film.

The DS's face buttons are more useful now for switching steps and tracks. Though a few places scream out: "the shoulder buttons would be perfect to scroll left and right this thing here!"

Neat software!! No tutorials, no colorful 'about' menus or contextual help. Basically this is an M1 (cough minus external I/O, some effects, maybe note memory and some other stuff cough) in your DS.... RADICAL!
