Playing through for the first time. Rage quit and then deleted the game after the first palace in a tough spot. But then it haunted me a day later so I redownloaded it and now I just finished the 2nd palace. I hate this game but I love it. I love it but it's dang hard for me but I'm pushing through.

i got as far as the hammer in the south cave. man hard as nails i tell ya
I beat it last summer. I actually really enjoyed it. I'm a much bigger fan of the 2D Zelda games than the 3D ones, and even within that 2D subset it was quite a departure from that norm, and was fun for that reason. The dungeons themselves aren't very hard, particularly once you figure out tactics for some of the more unsavory enemies, like the dark nuts. The toughest part by far is the cryptic nature of the clues and the overworld in general. I played through the Adventure Time game which very clearly was modeled after Zelda II, and I found it to be deplorable. Not a good game at all, unfortunately. I still need to play the Xanadu games and Battle of Olympus, which I know feel sort of Zelda II-esque.
Zelda2 is a fantastic and underrated entry in the series, but it's also one of the most brutally hard and cryptic. I beat it once when I was younger, haven't touched it since.
I am an old geezer so i actually played this game when it came out. i was in middle school and i vividly remember how dorky i was.... i got it for christmas and my parents said i could open one present before they woke up. at 4am i was playing this game and the crisp 8 bit graphics with the crisper 8 bit music glowed on my tube trinitron sony tv. it was still dark outside so the graphics blew me away. now, as i played, i did feel like it was a very different experience from anything ive ever experienced. but thats how everything was back then. metroid, zelda1, mario.. kid icarus.. they really mastered game design and although i dont know if this game will attract new players from this generation, i was hooked. to continue on my nerdyness, i actually took the instruction booklet to school and displayed it on my desk.
i loved this game. it did for me what zelda 1 did in that it made me realize how amazing nintendo was. the temple battles are epic and just getting past a blue or red knight was difficult.
i remember turning into a fairy a few times to get to a platform that i would not be able to reach..
i remember the final temple having different epic music from the other temples.. and death mountain spewing fireballs from above.. really really difficult.
i battled my shadow and i was blown away !!! please give this game shot! you will enjoy it i think.. haha
I also have fond memories of playing this game as a child. My best advice is to spend some quality time in the overworld fighting enemies and leveling up a bit before even attempting to start the first palace. Not that the first palace is too difficult but, defeating the final boss gives you lots of experience points,....experience points that could go towards Level 3 or 4 of something rather than Level 2. (my point being, you can level up to 2 and 3 by just defeating enemies)
-hope that makes sense. Good luck, try not to get too frustrated, the game can do that.
I owned it when I was in elementary school, and could only ever get past the second temple. Even though I gave up, it always stuck in my mind; it's almost a lot of fun...
I finally went back to it last fall and beat it. It's still as hard as I remember, and playing it I can see so many small things that could be fixed to make the game a ton less frustrating. If it had a direct sequel, it could probably be amazing.
Some of the secrets could be slightly, slightly less obscure. I am thinking of the spell spell and the hidden village.
I don't think there is a problem with the difficulty in need of fixing. It is actually very forgiving by NES standards. The only thing you lose on death is a little experience and progress. No starting all over, no losing items, you start at full health. No dungeon is super far from where you start, and you get a lot of the exp back on the way. I could see maybe adding more one-up dolls.
I just gave up because of the difficulty, but I beat the first palace before that. Does anyone know where that statue thing is you need for the second spell? (high jump, I think)
I had given up for awhile on the Wii Virtual Console, but then I would just go back to playing it every once in a while. Started to enjoy it once I got farther, but I am currently at around over 60 deaths... Stocked up on lives, but failed when going towards the final palace I did beat it using the restore points on my 3DS.
