This. This is the kind of crap that makes a person feel unlucky. So it started Thursday night, I was all hyped for Smash Bros. coming out the next day, and I picked up my 3ds to play some more of the demo. I have had the demo opened for like a week, so I opened it up, like normal, but there wasn't anything on the screen. Both of the screens were black. I thought it might've been a one time thing so I turned it off, and turned it on again. Still black. And it's been like this ever since then. The power light still comes on blue and so does the charging light, but there's not screen display or sound. Luckily my buddy and I have been sharing his 3ds for Smash Bros, but man. Like is that not THE most unlucky thing, the day before Smash I mean come on. It's the first time my 3ds has messed up since I got it 3 years ago. Do you have a solution?

My best bet would be to turn on the 3DS and wait a while. Unless you already did that? How long have you waited for the screen to appear?
EDIT: Maybe it's the SD card? Try removing and reinserting it (with the 3DS off, of course)
SECOND EDIT: Also, you'll have more success if you rename the title of this thread to specify what your issue is. Having a generic title doesn't help.
Thanks for the title tip thing. Taking out the SD card and putting it back in didn't worked, and I have tried keeping it turned on for a while to see if it comes on.

Do you mean you left it in sleep mode for a week? I think a couple of people on GameFAQs or r/smashbros had issues when they left the game in sleep mode for a long time, too.

I've had the exact same problem before, man. More than once.
To fix my system, I had to open it up. (Opening up your system voids your warranty, but mine was already gone, so you may want to be careful about that.) To do that, you'll have to take off the battery cover, and there will be a bunch of small screws which can be taken off with a small Phillips-head screwdriver. Once you take off the lid (and be very careful doing that, as there are two thin cables connecting the shoulder buttons) you will see a rectangular chip on the middle of the bottom (if that makes any sense). That's the Wi-Fi chip. Very carefully disconnect the chip, but don't take the wire out of course. Disconnect it for about 30 seconds. Make sure that when putting the chip back in, the wire gets put back in its little slot. Put the lid back on, put one or two screws back in, put the battery back in the slot, and turn it on. If you still get the same result as before, try again (I had to do this a couple of times before my system worked again). However, if it turns on all the way, put all the screws back in and put the battery cover back on.

I guess this serves as a warning for everyone else to close out of Smash Bros. whenever you're finished with it. Is this perhaps a bug when the 3DS reallocates RAM intended for the OS but is instead used for Smash?

It probably wouldn't hurt to keep trying. This is all that I do to fix the black screen on my 3DS when I get it, so if you still get a black screen, I won't be able to help you further. Sorry!
I've had pretty much the exact same problem once a long time ago. I had some game running in sleep mode (I remember it being Animal Crossing, but I'm not completey sure) and I came back after a few hours, opened it up, but just got blank screens and the power light. I remember the system seemed like it was turning on normally, but it took abnormally long to turn off (judging from the blue light) My 3DS was still under my 1-year warranty, so I just had to send it in. I've never had that problem since.
the updates will improve the stability of the 3ds so if you update it frequently, the issue will be very rare.
Or try this, whenever you play games on 3ds, turn off WI-FI connection because I did have like this at one point of time and I noticed that it was the wifi that cause those black screens but unfortunately, it starting working immediately after a few more seconds.
Try removing the battery and put it in again and see how it goes.
Thanks for all of the suggestions guys, but I'll just get a new 3ds. Eh, It'll be kind of nice to upgrade to an XL, and it'll be that NES edition one that hits Friday.
No you can't. You need both systems to transfer data. If you just put the SD card from the broken one into your new one it wouldn't be able to read the data.

Well that hurts.... Dang it man! At least I get physical copies if I have the choice, but man I lost a few Eshop games and probably a few other things. DANG
My brother has this problem on his 3DS sometimes. The first time, he was going to send his 3DS in for repairs. In a few weeks (or several days, I don't quite remember), right before getting ready to mail it, he opened it and the thing was working again.
