Topic: This Amiibo stuff, Codename Steam, or the game with the Fire Emblem characters (to most people who didn't care about it before today)

So...yeah. I kinda don't know what to think about the Codename S.T.E.A.M. bit from the Nintendo Direct. Yeah, I get it...you don't have to buy the amiibo's...and it's kinda obvious, they are using the popularity of the FE:Awakening game to promote the new IP. But, I just don't like it.

First off, I don't want physical DLC. I try to keep as little junk as possible in my personal space these days, and it's just not conducive to how I want to live my life. Yeah, I know. They are small, and don't take up much room, and then you have a box load of them. And, who wants to be using these things with a 3DS anyway. If your FE character dies you have to have the amiibo to revive them. Who is gonna carry them all around? I'm guessing Nintendo is finally admitting more people don't travel with their own portable now?

So, we now have locked characters that took dev time away from original characters from the game. But, I know your answer, oh well we wouldn't have gotten them anyway. Not true...anytime DLC is added, or characters are locked that is dev time lost on something. I don't like it at all.

And you have to get a new 3DS to do any of this crap...who is gonna do this? I don't get it. Just offer an unlock or something, I mean c'mon. I love Fire Emblem, and I love the look of this new game (Day 1 buyer here, you can believe that), but something really irked me about locking it all behind physical DLC.

I really do not like this amiibo stuff at all.

I'm actually with you, but I have this feeling that the FE characters may get released as DLC a bit later.

Still, it is on-disc DLC in a slightly less sleezy form

Realistically Nintendo is in a lose-lose situation with amiibo. People complain when there's meaningful compatibiiity like this and amiibo party mode in Mario Party 10 but also complain when there's no meaningful compatibility (e.g. Hyrule Warriors outside of Link, Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad).

Yes but people keep buying Amiibos which gives Nintendo a big WIN

The key is that games with Amiibo support need to be built around Amiibo. Nintendo needs to announce them and say "okay, this is an Amiibo game", or they need to add a mode that really only makes sense when it is linked to an NFC interface.

S.T.E.A.M. does none of those things. As far as we were aware prior, it wasn't an Amiibo compatible game. Then today they added a ton of content with 4 other characters but locked them behind Amiibo, even though they don't necessarily need to.

Adding insult to injury, there is no word of a the separate Amiibo adapter for 3DS, so it seems like you may NEED an n3DS to get the full experience.

So as of today, the additional cost (beyond what was anticipated prior) to get the full Codename: S.T.E.A.M. experience is:
New 3DS XL (assuming you sell an old 3DS XL and $150) +$50
A/C Adapter +$10
Marth, Ike, Robin, Lucina Amiibos +$52

So today, the price of STEAM basically went up by 100 dollars.

If you want those exclusive optional characters that will make no sense in being there in the story.

I completely understand your point. On top of that, who knows how easy or difficult it will be to get these particular amiibo? They announced more Marth figures coming to NA later this year. To me that's just a start.

I'm still trying to convince myself I don't want any of these things but this is making that difficult.

I am personally only getting Amiibo of my favorite characters. Once they start the card stuff those are the ones I want to collect.

It's dumb, and pointless, no matter what, if they don't have an option for people that don't want physical clutter. Not having an extra option online to pay for the DLC (even if it's even more expensive) is wrong.

That would be like saying a certain controller is needed to play a certain mode of a game and you should be given the option to play that mode by buying DLC that costs more than the controller. The Amiibo functionality in Project STEAM is completely optional. It is just one of the cooler Amiibo functions, using one of the rarest figures, that is making people upset. Just wait for the NFC Cards that they keep talking about. Then it will be even cheaper, and won't take up as much space.

Amiibo's aren't controllers. I don't get the comparison. It's locked content I can never get to, unless I buy a New 3DS, and the related amiibo's. I don't want stupid cards, either. I want an option to unlock the content other than hunting down crappy physical product that is pointless 1 millisecond after it's scanned in the game.

MrGawain

With this scenario Nintendo have the option to offer DLC for the Fire Emblem characters, and would be stupid not to. This is the first really worthwhile amiibo use uncovered, and promotes a good looking little game that hasn't had too much good press. I say buy the game, if you like it then see what your DLC/amiibo options are (likely cards or DLC). If the game is no good, it seems pointless to buy the extra characters.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

I don't see how the Amiibo/Controller comparison doesn't work. There is completely option content you want to experience but you need something physical, and Amiibo or Controller, in order to play it. Why would they release it as DLC? They want people to buy Amiibo (which will be used in more than 1 game) This is just marketing trying to convince people to buy Amiibo. If Amiibo weren't a thing then this content probably wouldn't exist.

Idk, it's sorta just a fun bonus for people who bought the amiibo(?)

Cause like, Codename STEAM is it's own universe clearly, having nothing to do with Fire Emblem,FE characters shouldn't be there. But since people bought the Marth/Ike/Lucina/Robin amiibos for Smash, why not just go ahead and make some fun content rewarding those who spent their money on these amiibos? Give them more use outside of just Smash.

I dunno, there's many different ways you could look at this to make it seem like a good or bad thing.

So, I may have misunderstood the video, but are the FE amiibo able to revive immediately after being killed? If so, Pay to Win DLC much?

I'm seriously unhappy with amiibo. Back in my day, you played a game, got good at it, them managed to get all of the weird hidden content by playing well. If you couldn't play the game well enough, you used a cheat code. I don't understand the problem with this model.

No revive between battles, it was worded weirdly. I am guessing those characters will get stat increases (maybe just slight) the longer they are alive and when they die and you have to revive them they lose those stats

I think people misunderstand me. I want this game. I have wanted it from the Day 1 reveal. I love the look, the premise, the gameplay...everything. And, Fire Emblem is the whole reason I got into Nintendo to begin with. It was my first, and still is, my favorite IP of theirs.

I just want an option to pay for the DLC. It's not the money. I don't want the physical clutter. The actual DLC is very cool! I want those characters. I also just want to play the game with the characters they created for it, as well. I just want Nintendo to come out and say, after a few months time, we'll make the DLC available online to unlock it for X amount of dollars. If that's the case, so be it, and I'm GOOD TO GO!

I just don't want it locked forever behind a physical DLC paywall. I am sensitive to NFC, and it gives me headaches. I found this out the hard way when I tried to play Skylanders with my nephew, so the physical part isn't an option for me. And, it wouldn't be anyway, as l like I say I don't want the statues/toys/cards.
