Smash Bros and Kid Icarus: Uprising developer Masahiro Sakurai has admitted that he considered making a Starfox game for 3DS rather than bringing back Pit for the new handheld.

Sakurai was the first person outside of Nintendo to be shown the 3DS and when Nintendo President Satoru Iwata asked him to create a game using a Nintendo franchise, he decided to bring back Kid Icarus after more than 20 years away.

However, he told Techland that he nearly chose another famous franchise. "Yes, there actually was one other and that was Starfox. But the problem with Starfox was that-and you'll see this when you see the trailer for Kid Icarus - is that the game design incorporates a lot of different views. For example, flying and shooting sideways or turning around and shooting behind and I felt that there were some restrictions with Starfox in this regard. With Pit, there is a certain amount of flexibility that is allowed and makes a better fit for this gameplay."

The last Kid Icarus game was released for NES in 1987 but Sakurai himself revived its star for Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii and this inspired him to make a new Kid Icarus game. "The revival of Kid Icarus actually began in Smash Bros. We brought him back for Smash Bros and I personally did all that design work. We made a decision to upgrade and re-envision what the character was like with some more current trappings. From that time I certainly had an interest in the franchise. Now this time around, the project actually began with an original game idea, and the match seemed to be a good one for the mythology and the character Kid Icarus. So it just so happened that the game idea and the franchise matched in the project then start it from there."

Of course a Starfox game is in development for 3DS so we get the best of both worlds. Sakurai working on a new Kid Icarus game and the return of Fox McCloud. What more could you ask for?

Given the choice, I'm glad that a more neglected character has been brought back over a character that has only been recently neglected but still has several games in his series.

But yay, a new Star Fox game will happen.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

I´m glad he made the choice of Kid Icarus. But it´s sad to see that even Official Nintendo magazine neglects the 1992 Gameboy title Kidi Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters. Sure, the NES game is better but it´s actually less than 20 years since the last game.

I've never played any of the Kid Icarus games and so you can see why I'm very excited about playing Kid Icarus: Uprising. With Square Enix have done the remake of Final Fantasy III on the Nintendo DS, it is my hope that Nintendo will remake Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters in 3D in an open world three dimensional enviroment for the Nintendo 3DS because that very title sounds exciting. I hope that Nintendo will focus more on Kid Icarus and giving him the kind of push they've given The Legend of Zelda franchise along with focusing more on Donkey Kong and expanding Animal Crossing before the MySims series takes over.

I actually finished Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters a couple of years ago, and while it's not quite as good or in no way as memorable as original, it's still a good game. Weird they never mentioned it.

PS: Oh, and TokyoRed, I love your Avatar

Thank you WaveBoy. I guess I might as well start writing out yet another petition to Nintendo for Kid Icarus: Of Myth and Monsters 3D and send it in to Nintendo. However, I think it'd be more reasonable to wait until after Kid Icarus: Uprising has been out for quite a while. Howbeit, I'm so giddy with excitment right now. These are indeed wonderful days for Nintendo fans!

Umm, you can't really do that. It would require changing the entire game. You can't just take a 2-D game, and make it 3-D, or vice versa.

KI:U looks awesome though. Props to Sakurai for hinting at Eggplant Wizard in the trailer.

Well it can be done. Square Enix remade the 2D Final Fantasy III game for the Nintendo DS is full 3D.

No, it only had 3D graphics. The gameplay itself remained 2D. Giving a 2D game 3D graphics is different from giving a 2D game 3D gameplay.

Ah, now I see your point. The gameplay itself was 2D. Forgive me, I was bit thick on the skullcap there. T_T
