Topic: Nintendo 3DS 3G wireless?

There are reports floating around the internet that there are handheld hardware companies in discussions with a major Japanese telco to provide 3G access for future consoles.

Obviously the two most likely candidates are the PSP2 and Nintendo 3DS.

Thoughts? I certainly hope it comes true - a Kindle-style approach to wireless for the 3DS would go a long way to helping Nintendo become competitive with online services.

As long if we don't have to pay for it ill be happy to have it.

Didn't Nintendo announce at E3 that there would be a free wireless network of around 2.5-2.7G (or something around there)?

The 3DS is not a smart phone XD It just needs wi-fi. Also it would cost money.

That is TLinkerbell to you!

They didn't seem to directly annonce it, but the fact that had to mention monthly fees is suspicious.

The Kindle's ToU state that for accessing the internet for things other than shopping Amazon/whatever services the Kindle provides, there is a charge... if Nintendo were to do something similar, we'd be paying for the Internet Browser on-the-go. As for the aforementioned Kindle-specific services, there's no charge for it yet -- note that the ToU also state 'Amazon reserves the right to discontinue wireless connectivity at any time or to otherwise change the terms for wireless connectivity at any time, including, but not limited to (a) limiting the number and size of data files that may be transferred using wireless connectivity and (b) changing the amount and terms applicable for wireless connectivity charges.' There's no telling what Nintendo may or may not be able to provide, either, so i'm not so sure that us being concerned about possible fees is that far off-base. :3

If it does have the feature already, and there is a fee, then the people who dont want to pay dont have to use it right? I mean if you dont sign up for it or w/e then you wouldn't have to, but for people who are on the road often and like to play Mario kart online ect. still could. Everybody wins, of course, if there is no cost, even better

To each his own.

Nintendo did say that Apple was what they are worried about now, so that seems to be the right direction to go.

The Kindle's been around a long time now, with no sign that Amazon has any intention on shooting themselves in the foot and charging for content.

I don't see a 3G service that charges for regular internet browsing as being unreasonable... especially if Nintendo-specific services, such as 3DSWare, is free. I never use the Kindle for non-Kindle browsing, but I sure use it (for free) for book shopping.

There's also no reason Nintendo can't also include WiFi for users with access to a hotspot - Apple does.

Point is, if Nintendo does offer a free 3G service, even if it is just for downloading and playing games online, then Nintendo is doing the right thing. Anything else, and once again they're lagging.

Funky_Gamer

If it has an extra fee, it better be optional.

It's 3G and will be games online, you're not downloading little book, this is streaming game sessions and possibly large game files.

It won't be free and it most likely will be optional.
Nintendo would be stupid not to include it, but I don't expect them to include it.

This. I'm also hoping that you can turn it off to save battery life.

Exactly.

Ok they can't put Youtube on it because handhelds and flash do not mix. Although now they have a Youtube Mobile site that uses html5 which mobile phones can use so maybe the 3DS could. Maybe Nintendo could have an app like the iTouch or phone and with 3D videos you could view them.

if they did, then that would be so awesome. i would always be on my 3ds! oh and i do believe the internet is going to be free, because if i heard right, Miyamoto said on that e3 video that u dont have to pay a monthly fee for the internet. correct me if i am wrong please.
