Topic: Getting an import 3DS these days

I started a thread about Sega 3D Classics Final Stage not coming to the West, and realized that there are other games, such as Dragon Quest spin-offs, that I'd like to own and be able to run on an actual 3DS. All with legal methods, of course.

So I was wondering if you guys recommend importing a japanese 3DS in 2018, where would you buy it and what experiences you have with European customs with this console, because lately they're stopping a lot more than before, thus charging extra to people.

Thanks

@Moroboshi876
Well, what genre do you like most ?
Because when i checked from playasia, there are some Japan Only 3DS games and Almost all of them are Casual games (But there are some Japan Only JRPG also).

Well, if you don't mind, you can try these:
1. Yokai Watch 3 Sushi / Tempura
2. Yokai Watch Buster
3. MonHun Nikki: Poka Poka Airu Mura DX
4. AKB48 + Me
5. Kuroko no Basuke
6. Inazuma Eleven series
7. Tongari Boushi no Mahou to Machi
8. Aikatsu series
9. Taiko no Tatsujin series
10. Sumikko Gurashi series

Happy hunting, happy playing.

@Anti-Matter No, I wasn't looking for recommendations, I know the games I want, I just want to know about the best way (cheapest way) to get an import 3DS system, because I understand it's not easy, especially nowadays with customs Gestapo.

Well... you need a Japanese 3DS machine to play Japanese only 3DS games.
Try playasia or Ebay for Japanese 3DS machines. If you lucky enough, you can get as same price as USA version, maybe around $ 180 - $ 200.

@Anti-Matter That much I know, I need a japanese console. I already said that. I'm not looking for a brand new anyway, I want it cheap, and I'll try to avoid eBay because I'll most probably have to pay customs if I do that. I'll look in Playasia, thanks, but I'll be waiting for more opinions.

@PokeNas Yeah, I'm aware of that, but aside from it being too complex for me, I'd really like to use original and legal means. Besides, be careful, this forum doesn't allow discussions about what you're suggesting. Thanks

@PokeNas I see. Well, I searched information about that too, but didn't find anything conclusive. Besides, I want to be able to use the 3DS normally, with online functions, access to the eShop... and I think actions related to homebrew and other goals tend to be incompatible with firmware update, which is a bummer, because some games often force you to update.

@Moroboshi876 Where do you live? Every now and then someone in your country might sell a Japanese 3DS on ebay. Set up a search & notification system on ebay and you'll get an alert next time one is listed.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

@PokeNas I'll keep searching then. All I find are methods from years ago that specify that your console has to have a firmware range that obviously we left behind at this point. Way behind. And other informations about the region free mod are about hacking, so if it ultimately has to be hacking... that's not what I wanted.

@gcunit Yes, that's probably my best chance. I'm from Barcelona, Catalonia.

@Moroboshi876 People eventually find an entry point on all firmware versions, it's just a matter of time if you're willing to wait. I recommend CFW as well, it's the cheapest and more convenient way to play American and Japanese games on your system.

@Moroboshi876 If you're in the US look around for game stores - not Game Stop major chains, I am talking about small companies that tend to cater to gaming from across the years. They tend to have some foreign stock.

You can also try Amazon Japan, believe it or not, some products to ship internationally from them. And Playasia and ebay have already been mentioned.

Oh, i want to ask.
Before i try to import European / Australian New 2DS XL to be played in Indonesia, will PAL region 3DS machines compatible with electricity in Indonesia (220 V input) ?
I'm afraid it will roast my PAL 3DS machine.

Moroboshi876

@Anti-Matter No, it won't. In Europe we have 220V too

Anyway, modern portable devices can change between 120-220, and it makes sense because portable devices are made for travelling.

@Moroboshi876
You know...
Lately i felt hyped & frustrated at the same time.
After i tried Dillon Dead Heat Breaker demo from my USA New 3DS XL, somehow.... it grew my new interest, especially when i tried to create my Amiimals.
I have never played Action games like that, but when i realized it published by Nintendo & rated Everyone / CERO A / PEGI 7, i can trust that game can be my new collection.

But the problem is...No Retail version for USA version, same as Style Savvy Styling Star (New Style Boutique 3 for PAL version)
Such a bummer.
I can straightly buy from USA E-shop, but as a Collector, owning games without Physical felt that i Never owning games at all (No physical presence ).

So, few days ago, i still confused to choose between Japanese & PAL 3DS machines. Both of them have their own merit. If i choose Japanese, i can play Dillon Dead Heat Breaker & Style Savvy Styling Star and other Japanese 3DS games in Physical retail, but that's means All the games will be in Total 100 % Japanese texts. I'm not really fluent in Japanese, can read Hiragana & Katakana with some Kanji but still unable to understand a whole sentences.

If i choose PAL version, i can play Dillon Dead Heat Breaker & New Style Boutique 3 in English language & got the Physical retail, but it will be Very wrong choice to choose PAL version 3DS machines since i had already owned 31 USA 3DS games that 95% of PAL 3DS games are SAME as USA version. And if i choose PAL machine, i can Only play 2 PAL 3DS games (Dillon & New Style Boutique 3) & All my NDS games, Not a great deal unless if i can add more PAL region games, whether the games are also in USA version but i still haven't get them OR the games are PAL Exclusive Only.

So, what do you think ?
Should i choose PAL 3DS machine for English language of those two games above + retail presence ?

Moroboshi876

@Anti-Matter Wow, I understand your predicament. Well, in my case I just want to play some Japanese games that weren't released in the West, so that would be buying a Japanese 3DS or finding a safe method to make my PAL 3DS region free.

I understand your need to own physical games, I opened my mind lately but still understand. It's not the same. Owning digital games gives you the same as piracy: where is the box? Where is the card/cart/disk?

In your case, if you only want 3 PAL games I would buy an American 3DS. But look at the prices of American and European games anyway, maybe it's better one of those territories just for the games' prices.

@Moroboshi876 I bought a New LL years ago from a company called Nin Nin Game, they had a duty free shipping option to the UK as they shipped Japanese stock from Europe, may be worth a look to see if they still do that!

Another good option for Japan imports, which is how I get most of mine, is to setup an account with Tenso, buy from Amazon Japan and have your items sent to Tenso.

You can then state the value of your package and shipping takes a week or less from them (choose the air mail option, second most expensive, around £5 for a game!) Sounds complicated but well worth doing for any importer!
