It has come to my attention that we don't have a general thread for discussing the 3DS library in this forum, so... here we are!

@JaxonH This should do, I think. The 3DS is my favorite system, so I'm happy to discuss its library with you. I've been repurchasing games I sold off recently and am in the process of trying to build a complete-ish 3DS collection (I don't care about shovelware or games I've genuinely no interest in playing, although the library as a whole is remarkably high quality).

What've you been playing?

@Ralizah
Right on. Just made a new thread like a boss

Is there any particular reason you sold off some of your library? Weren't into collecting or just needed money at the time? I'm the same way inasmuch that, I don't care about a collection having shovelware or games that aren't good enough to at least have a following, even if it's niche (like the guild games, those have a following- you clearly like some of them, so I grabbed all 7).

Plus, 3DS can only show 300 installed apps- after that they're invisible and you won't see them appear until you delete something else. And with 50 SNES VC games, 50 GBA VC games, couple NES and GBC games, 50 digital only titles, about 25 apps for various things (save manager, theme manager, homebrew, etc) that only leaves room for about 125 retail games. Gotta make em count.

I took my backup black New 3DS (faceplates model) which was hacked and put back in the box years ago, and applied a glass screen protector on it, installed all my VC games, installed all my digital titles, and am now going through my physical library and, one by one, dumping the carts into .cia files which can be installed. I'm currently only 20 games in, so it may take another week or so of dumping carts before I'm done. My other two 3DS (white New 3DS and gold Zelda New 3DS XL) I just shipped out to XCubicle to get their top screens replaced. But I like this black one. Love the smaller New 3DS. So portable, games look so much better on the smaller screen too.

Haven't had much time to play because my other two are shipped out and this one I'm just dumping carts nonstop. But at work I did start SMTIV Apocalypse today. Barely 15 min in though. Also tried Liberation Maiden for a bit, and Shovel Knight and Severed. Steamworld Dig 2 (love the 3D effect- I actually like these games more on 3DS than Switch!). Started DQM Joker 3 and got a save going. Started SMT Strange Journey but that was on other 3DS- will have to start over on this system.

Oh btw, the hack scene on 3DS now is muah! Chef's kiss all the way. They've come so far. I updated to latest hack and holy crap, it's so good now. Can hold L, Dpad Down, Select at any time to bring up a menu where you can overclock (super simple, single option you check to increase clock), take screenshots, use cheats (yes! The new Checkpoint save manager has cheats you can install for every game, and they're built in to the app automatically, then once installed you do the L/Down/Select while in game to turn them on or off as desired via the menu- infinite money in SMT4 Apocalypse, max app points, etc).

Played some Persona Q2- really wish it were 3D. I know you said Atlus wasn't the best at it but honestly, I like the effect so much I've been happy with it so far in the SMT games. Even just having the sprites and text show in the foreground is awesome. Kinda want to play FE Fates Revelation, which I never played. Or another Awakening run. Hard mode casual or Normal mode classic. Stella Glow sounds good too. But so do the smaller games- Mario vs DK games, BoxBoy, Steamworld Dig 2, etc. Oh, I started Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story. Still early game though. Also started Zelda Ocarina of Time, but from the beginning since this 3DS doesn't have my save file. Fired up Metroid but, I'm lost. I don't know where to go. I'm in area 2? Some fire chambers around. Seems nomatter where I go I only end up in places I've already been. REALLY want to play that but I need direction. Prime at least gave destinations- you just had to figure out how to get there. I need that. Also want to try WarioWare Gold.

So many games, hard to decide what to play. Once I get them all installed, may want to try Captain Toad and Yoshi's Wooly World to check 3D effect.

I'm sure nobody ever talked about Dillon's Dead Heat Breakers 3DS here except me.
Even that thread i created long time ago still has no reply.

@Tasuki I thought about that, so I checked the thread out. Almost all the posts pertain to aspects about the system itself. We're not primarily discussing the New 3DS, and 99% of these games work fine on the old 3DS as well. I understand and appreciate the need for keeping the forum tidy, which is why I rarely create threads, but I really don't think having one more thread in a largely dead part of the site is going to bother anyone.

@Anti-Matter I never bothered with it because the first one wasn't really my jam. How would you say it compares to the original?

@JaxonH Money, and, for a long time, I didn't really care about collecting games for the system at the time. However, at this point, I sort of see Nintendo 3DS as the last gasp for pure physical gaming in the medium. It's the only modern system I can think of without any half-physical games, or collections where you have to download one of the games, or where a significant chunk of the physical releases are limited run nonsense that'll be $500 online if you miss your chance to nab them (the irony being that the first ever LRG 3DS release literally went live earlier today, lol). And aside from a few smaller games and certain Capcom franchises like Ace Attorney, pretty much the entire library is available physically. Not all in NA, but one day I might buy a secondary console to modify so that I can play releases from other regions as well (and take screenshots, I guess; I never knew how annoying it was not to be able to take screenshots until I got a Switch, and it's even a bit of a hassle on PS4).

I've been slowly collecting a lot of the harder to find games over time (for a reasonable price; if you watch ebay like a hawk, at some point, you're usually able to snag a copy that's weirdly way lower in price than other listings), although I stupidly sold my FEF Special Edition cartridge a while back, so I'm debating whether I want to pay a premium for that or just pick up the cheaper retail versions and ignore having a physical of the third campaign entirely. I bought Persona Q2 digitally and didn't realize how rare the cartridge had gotten until it was too late. Now that's another one I'm keeping an eye out online for.

Anyway, having played a major chunk of the games on the system, I've become a bit of a snob when it comes to the 3D. Atlus games feel like they do the minimum to enhance the game, so I usually just turn it off when playing them to conserve battery life. The effect in YWW is... subtle, I guess. There's no obvious eye-popping enhancement to it. At the same time, the image just feels a bit... fuller... with the 3D enabled. It's hard to explain, but I won't play it in 2D. Also, on New 3DS, the game holds at 60fps with the 3D turned on, unlike some other games I could mention (eyes Dead or Alive: Dimensions warily)

Is the Metroid 2 remake your first time playing that game? Just poke around, and you'll find your way. It was about a million times harder to play on the Game Boy.

I actually obtained a copy of Warioware Gold recently from a Walmart sale. The demo was incredibly fun, so I'm eager to dig into it. Being primarily a mini-game collection, it won't distract me from the longer games I'm playing either.

Well...
Only Dead Heat Breakers caught my attention due to Amiimals, part time job mini games and Tower Defense gameplay.
Also, that game has physical release despite Japan and PAL only, the USA version still digital only.

I've been on a 3DS kick lately, mainly Pokemon Ultra Sun, which I purchased recently on the eShop (for some reason, the Ultras are considerably cheaper than the original Sun/Moon in the Mexican eShop).

I've been giving it a much more fair try compared to when I played Ultra Moon some time ago, giving myself time to explore and enjoy the game. I've been able to enjoy it a lot more so far.

Of course, me being me, I've decided to kill the fun and ruin the game for me by choosing to hunt for a shiny Ditto during the Ditto Five side quest. So I'll probably be sick and tired of the game by the time I'm done with that.

@Eel Still not entirely sure I've ever caught a shiny in one of these games. šŸ˜‚

@Ralizah the Ultras actually come with a way to hunt for ā€œeasyā€ shinies if youā€™re interested (and have one of those games)

At some point in the game, you unlock a mini game called the ultra wormhole ride, where you ride on either Lunala or Solgaleo and can go through portals to little rooms where you can either find a legendary, ultra beast, or a plain regular PokƩmon.

These regular PokĆ©mon have something special about them them though: depending on the rank of the portal you enter, these can have crazy good chances of being shiny. Itā€™s determined the moment you enter the room, so you can actually save before the battle if you want to try getting a particular nature on them.

Iā€™ve found one that way in Ultra Moon, a Nuzleaf.

Tbh I probably wonā€™t play the 3DS again, the Switch is far more comfortable and I even waited a few years to play Layton's Mystery Journey on the switch rather than get the 3DS version as I didnā€™t want to go back to it. Thereā€™s a few games I never finished on it like Ever Oasis, one of the paths in Fire Emblem Fates, Citizens Of Earth but just donā€™t have the enthusiasm for.

Also Iā€™m just gonna say Codename Steam deserved more love.

I got my first 3DS after getting the Switch (weird, right?), but Iā€™ve been steadily building up a small collection. Itā€™s been fun picking up absolute bargains - got Xenoblade 3D for about a tenner, for example, after the Switch port was announced. A week or so earlier it would have cost me more than twice as much.

I upgraded to a New 2DS XL last year because my original 3DS was getting uncomfortable to use (the rubber covering of the Circle Pad had come off, the shoulder buttons sometimes didn't work, and it's just... so small). I kind of miss the 3D but Nintendo had stopped manufacturing all models except the 2DS and New 2DS for some reason so if I wanted a 3D model I would have had to buy it second-hand which I decided not to do. At least I still have my old 3DS though so if I want to see what a game looks like in 3D I can play it on there as long as I have a physical copy.

Anyway, the New 2DS XL is really comfortable, I think it's great apart from the lack of 3D and a couple of odd design choices (why are the speakers at the bottom where they get obstructed by your palms?). I'm playing Oracle of Ages on VC at the moment and I've been picking up various bargains from My Nintendo discounts and Argos's 3DS clearance. I'm looking forward to playing Code Name STEAM which I bought a sealed copy of for Ā£1.49.

I'll be firing up my 2ds more as my switch backlog dwindles down. Atm I'm actually playing donkey kong land. Ill prob buy out all the GB games honestly. Same with color. I still have to play sticker star dream team and when I do my zelda run, ill play the 3ds versions of OoT and MM.

I can definitely relate- once Switch released my enthusiasm for 3DS sunk like a brick in an ocean. It was instant, no delay in the OS, games were HD, full button set, hybrid, and actual console games on par with the previous home console, Wii U, except also handheld. For 3 years I had zero interest in ever touching 3DS again.

But then Ralizah kinda convinced me to give it a second look, and I'm so glad I did. Yes, theres a bit of delay in the OS. No, it's not HD. No, it doesnt have a complete button set. But you know what? None of that has been even remotely as bad as I'd made it out in my mind. All the games are designed around the button set it has. With 3D on, and on the small screen of New 3DS, games look remarkably good. And the delay in the OS isnt much of an issue now that the generation is over, I'm never going to the eShop or Miiverse, etc. Just starting games and stopping.

Suddenly 3DS has reasserted itself into my gaming regimen, and I never thought I'd be saying that just a few weeks ago.

Perhaps if you give it a second look, you'll come to a similar place as I.

@Ralizah
Same thing happened to me with Yokai Watch 3. I bought virtually every good 3DS game throughout the generation but passed on YW3. Then it shoots up over $100 after the fact. Ended up scooping it eventually but, it's ironic given how many games I buy, the one I didn't became the most expensive to buy later.

I'm a screenshot addict. And using Miiverse to screenshot was a nightmare- like a 2 min process. Being a able to capture instantly now is huge. And, just having the entire SNES/GBA catalog- more than just the official ones (they can inject any retro game into the VC shell now to make official looking VC games of everything) is so amazing. Theme manager is cool but honestly I prefer the official ones. The save manager though... wow. Super user friendly too. Games show up as square icons like on the home menu. Select, and either backup to SD, restore, or install cheats. Also, yes Samus Returns is my first time playing, though I've beaten all 3 Prime games.

I would say go for the full FE Fates cart. It's a one time expense and then you own it forever. And the cost of buying 2 separately will add up to $60+ anyways. Why not add another $40 and get the whole enchilada.

I had several copies of the SE (I still have a sealed CE and one that's open with the game case on the shelf), and was going to give one of my spares to someone on this site a few years ago who had theirs stolen. But I was selling a bunch of games on eBay at the time and it turned out I had already listed it and people had started bidding. Couldnt in good conscience cancel the listing. Felt bad telling dude I couldnt send him the copy after I already told him I could. I found another spare a year later or so, and swear I still have it somewhere, buried in the basement or a closet, but havent been able to find it (maybe I sold it too?). Otherwise I'd send it to you.

So are you a New 3DS, New 3DS XL, or 2DS XL kinda guy?

@JaxonH Oh yeah, it's nuts how quickly YW3 shot up in price. The print run must have been remarkably small. It's a pity that we might not end up getting YW4 on Switch, given that game actually looks kind of interesting.

I have thousands of screenshots on my Switch, although I've discovered that if you game share with another user (I do this with my nephew so that he has access to my digital library), some of your screenshots can get transferred entirely to another system. Screenshots went missing and popped up on his system, for some reason. UTTERLY bizarre.

Ah, it's OK. My fault for selling the thing anyway. I think I'm going to save the money I would have spent on a next gen console this holiday and put it toward fleshing out my 3DS and Switch collections a bit. It's not like I need another console when I barely have time to keep up with the games I want on the systems I do own.

I've owned two New 3DS XLs to date, but mostly because the smaller one wasn't available when I was in need of one. I've thought about ponying up the cash for the smaller model, but there's really no call for it when the XL still feels great, and NDS games look crisp and perfect on the bigger screen in the 1:1 ratio mode.

Have you played Fantasy Life?

@Ralizah
Just the beginning of Fantasy Life but it's been a while.

Honestly, PC will get 99% of the games next gen consoles get anyways, and the library will last in perpetuity and down the line when you upgrade you can get even better performance. Not to mention gyro which, I dont need to tell you. You're probably the only person as insistent upon it as I am.

They had New 3DS for $99 in a Christmas sale so that's when I copped. Now they're probably sold out. I couldnt even find adjustable styli for it. Vendors only carry for XL now. Did eventually find a listing on eBay but, it was the only one.

I can't believe Level 5 is so dense to port Yokai Watch 4 to PS4 where it didnt even chart, yet hasn't brought to the west where it would probably do 150k minimum. Maybe more. Whenever its other systems its priority. But never when its Switch.

I bounce between my Lite and v2 all the time and never had screenshots move between. I'm not even sure thats possible since the system stores on sd or memory with no function to transfer. Well clearly its possible if it happened, but it doesnt seek like something that should happen.

The XL does look good- that was the one I went back to a few weeks ago. But the New 3DS has roughly 13% higher ppi, and the smaller screen helps hide the need for greater detail on top of the higher ppi. Games look noticeably better on it versus the XL. Again, not that XL is bad, its just a noticeable step up in perceived image quality. Was playing Soul Hackers at work today and even the low detail characters in the background didnt look too bad due to how small they were and the slightly higher ppi.
