I was so excited that, for a few seconds, I forgot all about Dragon Quest's recent problems with escaping its home country. Now I'm gloomy again.
It's cool to see that they're adding two new party members, a new scenario, voice acting and an orchestral soundtrack - though the international versions already had the latter two. While it's not quite the massive (and, frankly, necessary) overhaul that the DQVII remake was, DQVIII was the quintessential DQ game as it was; SE could've just released a straight port and it would've been an excellent addition to the 3DS library.
There might be some cause for optimism here; this same game came out on iOS/Android last year and it was released worldwide. As far as translating the game goes, it's safe to say most of the heavy lifting has already been done. Mind you, I'm still not holding my breath, but it sure would be an awful waste for them to not localize this one!
Yeah, the script is already done from both the PS2 release and the mobile port, but there is additional content here too.
At least the DQ8 script is nowhere near the size of the DQ7 script though.

I would have bought it for android had they included the voice acting. If they bring this to Europe or update the android version with voice acting, I'll get it.
We're going on a bear hunt! We're going to catch a big one!

This brings our total up to six ladies and gentlemen. Six 3DS Dragon Quest games we wont be getting, because Square Enix hates the West. Check my signature if you haven't already though, it seems like signing a petition is the least we can do.
Surely we have to get this one in the west given that they've already got the translation? The cost for them would be minimal.
C'mon Squenix. I've always wanted to play this one! The economics don't seem to really support their lack of interest in localizing. While it's true that they're mostly bought in Japan, the sales for most of the main games released in the west have passed 1 million sales. 1 million sales has to be enough to rationalise just copying an old english script into a ported game?
Out of interest, was the DQ7 dialogue completely redone? Cos didn't they also have an english translation for that from the PS1 era.
Crap, I guess I'll have to import this one as well as VII.
Although Dragon Quest never became hugely popular in the West, Square Enix is underestimating the demand for the series here.
I think the audience is actually pretty decent. I think DQ8 on PS2 and DQ9 on DS both sold reasonably well. Not Final Fantasy well of course, but no JRPG sells like Final Fantasy in the west except Final Fantasy. At least Bravely Default well though, and that's... something?

Everything was redone in DQ7...
That's what I was hoping. It surely points to the fact that 7 didn't/hasn't been announced for the west because they don't think the effort of translating such a wordy game is worth the potential sales.
I can't see what other reason there would be. Assuming that's true, it obviously doesn't apply to 8 and we can hopefully expect a release.
Oh, we already know that the mountain of text in 7 is what has been preventing a Western release. Square-Enix came right out and said that they're worried that DQ7 won't sell enough to justify the costs of translating and localizing its enormous script.
That same excuse doesn't quite hold water for Rocket Slime 3, but that case is merely because we aren't allowed to have fun.
