Full disclosure: I backed Nefarious on Kickstarter... in 2014. It was slated for a 2015 release on Wii U. As was the case with many Kickstarter video game projects, it was delayed repeatedly, and by the time it was complete, the Wii U was no longer a going concern. I give the developer a ton of credit for making it available to backers for the Switch at no extra cost, though.
I backed the game because I loved the concept: a sort of reverse Mega Man in which I would play the bad guy, running around and defeating good guys in a variety of settings and scenarios, while kidnapping various damsels in distress. The comic book art style appealed, too, and is based on an established web comic of the same name.
In practice, the game is just okay. The boss battles are definitely a highlight, and show a ton of variety and creativity on the part of the developer. For example, one is set up like a 16-bit Final Fantasy battle, but with a twist that I won't spoil. Good stuff!
The rest of the game is pretty meh. The level design leaves a lot to be desired; I frequently found myself getting lost or frustrated with an inability to progress beyond the game's sometimes sprawling and uninspired platforming courses.
Lots of potential here, but it just didn't click with me liked I hoped it would.
