Moon Cresta comes from a weird time in gaming. Arcades were entering a Golden Age, as Space Invaders continued to dominate and Pac-Man fever was sweeping the world. The former title inspired far, far more imitators, each of which sought to create a slightly new twist on what was becoming gaming's biggest genre: the vertically-scrolling shoot-'em-up.

In Moon Cresta's case, the gimmick is that your space fighter can be expanded and strengthened by adding sections, arranged sort of like a pine tree shape (think the stages of the rockets that took NASA's Apollo missions to the moon). Adding the sections makes your fighter more powerful, but you'll need to successfully dock with each one first (which can be challenging). As you progress through the game, you'll use each of the three sections for various firepower effects.

Otherwise, the gameplay is very similar to Galaxian.

It's fine. The sequel, Terra Cresta, is much better.
