Topic: Other M Level Design

I am absolutely loving Other M and blame games media for warding me away.

Except for the level design, in particular finding invisible paths forward.

Look at this.

This crap is crazy. I spent at least half an hour going in circles, looking literally everywhere I could. I had to use TWO faqs to find this place. I don't have half an hour to waste. I have too much to do and too many games to play.

Anyway, just felt like venting.

I always wondered if this game was as bad as literally everyone said it was. It just seems like a third person Prime game to me.

Wait, why do we need a signature? Eh, I don’t know. Here’s your signature.

It's more that the gameplay isn't as good or well thought out as a usual Metroid game and there's way more focus on a story people didn't like than the game as a whole being bad.

@kkslider5552000 yeah I’ve seen major complaints about the story showing Samus as more vulnerable emotionally instead of being portrayed as the usual bad*** bounty hunter. Maybe that’s the problem they have?

@TheBigBlue In my opinion, it is as bad as everyone says. In the past couple of years, more and more people have had more positive views of it. Which is fine, people are entitled to their opinions and it doesn’t bother me. But my goodness I really hate it. Everything from the story to the world design to the controls is just… terrible. The story in particular is the true highlight. It’s amazingly bad, and does a huge disservice to the Metroid series as a whole. It single-handedly killed the series for around a decade, and for me that will always be a reason to strongly dislike it.

I think the whole PTSD thing is fine, like it makes sense for Samus to have it if she’s had a traumatic experience related to it in the past. But it just doesn’t fit within the context of the timeline. Sort of minor spoilers for Other M if you care: She encounters a boss that is the same species as Ridley. It isn’t Ridley specifically, but looks almost identical. And that’s what triggers her PTSD of when Ridley killed her family when she was a child. However, at this point in the timeline, Samus has fought Ridley in Metroid 1, Super, Prime 1, and Prime 3. And in none of those games is there any sign of past trauma even remotely hinted at. So as a result it feels very out of place and random. However, that moment isn’t even the biggest offender of the story; there is much worse here.

Just as a huge Metroid fan, I thought this game was a huge step back in what the series had done prior, both in gameplay and story. If you like it, that is completely fine. But in my opinion, it is probably one of the worst games I’ve ever played.

Sorry that was a long rant

Despite my complaint about level design, I actually really enjoyed the game. I assumed it was going to be awful, but I'm playing through the entire Metroid franchises, I borrowed a copy from my brother. The combat is fun, the world design is interesting, and I didn't mind the portrayal of Samus.

I really enjoyed this game. The gameplay felt like an alternative 3d idea to prime and doing the whole thing with just a single wii remote really worked.
I started with Metroid Fusion so it was very natural to me to build on the history with Adam and ‘any objections, lady?’
