For non-Americans and others who asked, Chuck E. Cheese is a chain of pizza restaurants for children. They have terrible pizza but a (typically) very large arcade area with stand-up machines as well as traditional carnival / arcade-style games like ski-ball, air hockey, foosball, etc. (Think Dave and Buster's for kids.) They also have large indoor play areas, ball pits, slides, and so forth. Frequently they host children's birthday parties. Most notorious is the stage area where giant animatronic mascots Chuck E. Cheese (a mouse) and his friends "perform" musical numbers.
A similar concept called "Showbiz Pizza" was bought by or merged into CEC several years ago.
Long story short, the game is shovelware and most copies will probably end up as prizes for redeemable tickets at CEC restaurants.
Played this to death on my Game Boy many years ago, and loved Tetris DX on GBC even more... still I have a hard time justifying a purchase with Tetris Axis on hand.
I'm about ready to give up on StreetPass. I spend 99 percent of my time in two of America's largest cities (Atlanta and Dallas), and no matter where or how often I carry my 3DS, I don't get any StreetPass "hits". In six months, I've had exactly two. Where are all the 3DS owners?
It kills me that so many of the 3DS Virtual Console releases have been stinkers like this. A big reason for my 3DS purchase was to rediscover lost classics, and I fear this string of duds will see lackluster sales and end up torpedoing the service prematurely.
DVD sales are falling off a cliff, and Blu-Ray isn't seeing the kind of growth studios had hoped for. Five years from now, virtually all home movie viewing will probably be streaming (i.e. Netflix) and discs will be a thing of the past, like tapes are today. Smart move by Nintendo to keep the price down a bit on what looks to be a very pricey system already.
Excellent review. I downloaded this shortly after it came out, having never played or even heard of the arcade version but being very familiar with the NES classic. I actually found it a little too frustrating since I haven't yet figured out how to break tackles or avoid throwing an interception on every pass. Looks and sounds great though. 5 out of 10
I loved this when I owned it on my Nintendo 64, and it still holds up very well. But as has been pointed out at length, the Virtual Console port suffers from a lack of a save feature and rumble feedback. It's also harder to play without the original N64 controller. 8 out of 10
I was a Nintendo fanboy growing up, and rarely played Sega games. Sonic the Hedgehog is the only Genesis game I can recall playing other than Altered Beast, so I was delighted to download the Virtual Console version when i got my Wii.
I have to say I was let down. Don't get me wrong - the graphics and music are top-notch for the era and still hold up well today. But for someone who grew up with Mario, I found the gameplay to be one-dimensional, slippery and frustrating. Let's face it -- Sonic is among the weakest platform characters in video game history, particularly in this incarnation. No rings? One hit, and he's toast. Hit with rings? Lose 'em all. Very few items and power-ups to collect, and unlike Mario's arsenal all the items are fleeting and last but a few seconds. And as mentioned above, for a game boasting so much speed, there are few opportunities to really run at top speed unless you've already played the game so much you know where every single enemy, spike trap and bottomless pit is located.
Sonic can run, and he can jump. That's it. Were Mario so limited in his first platformer, the series probably would have ended with Super Mario Bros.
I had never played a Sega Master System game before downloading this one on Virtual Console -- heck I'd never even seen an SMS in person. I think the only Game Gear games I ever played were Sonic the Hedgehog and Columns, so this was an entirely new experience for me.
That said, I agree with the review on most points. The graphics are good for an 8-bit era game; the stages are short; and this is a very, very easy title. Another problem: the music and sound effects are TERRIBLE. 5 out of 10
Every bit as hard as I remember, and then some. Frustratingly difficult, sometimes unfair, but decent graphics and a masterful soundtrack. As others have said, the cinema scenes are also a treat. 7 out of 10
This was one of my first NES games years ago, and I was thrilled at the prospect of being able to play it again. The Wii save feature is a HUGE help, as well as finding tips on the Web... but I have to agree, this is a very challenging game that demands a lot of the player's intuitiveness and willingness to explore every nook and cranny. You just can't waltz through this title -- you really have to work to beat the game.
Still, the graphics are decent and the music is great; very eerie and even a little creepy at times. 7 out of 10
Terrific music, great graphics, awesome gameplay, good challenge... not that all of this hasn't been said. Every bit as good as I remembered it. 8 out of 10
The "vertical" screen effect doesn't look too good on a 16:9 HDTV -- like Tetris Party, it's a little too hard to see the action from more than a few feet away. Also a pretty steep learning curve, so be ready for a tough game. This is my first Virtual Console Arcade purchase, and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. 6 out of 10
I hadn't played Galaga since dropping some quarters in an arcade or laundromat or something some years ago, so I was pleased to see two versions on Virtual Console. I decided to go with Galaga '90, which also happens to be my first TurboGrafx-16 download and the first TG-16 game I've ever played. Tons of fun, highly addictive and challenging. 7 out of 10
Final Fight was one of my favorite arcade games as a kid, so I was pretty excited when I got my Wii and made this one of my first purchases. I have to say I was somewhat disappointed; all concerns about the Super NES version aside, this game is just way too difficult. Hopefully the arcade versions of this and the Double Dragon series are released one of these days, though I get the feeling Nintendo is winding down Virtual Console. 6 out of 10
I played this a lot as a kid, and it was probably the most popular game I owned as far as my friends were concerned. In fact, as I recall one of my brother's friends actually "borrowed" it and I never saw it again.
Now, some 20 years later, I have it again on Virtual Console... and I have to say I'm at a loss. I don't know why we all loved this game so much. Yeah, it's funny knocking down the other racers, and the track editor is okay, but otherwise there's just not much to say. Very little replay value, and I found I got bored with it in a hurry. Oh well! 5 out of 10
This was one of my favorite games for the Super NES, and I have fond memories of playing it with my best friend in high school. Great graphics, fantastic soundtrack and reasonably challenging, if fairly straightforward. My only complaint is the number of times you run into "dirty tricks" and end up losing a life -- for example, the enemy hiding in the shadows just pixels away from a course exit, or the platform you expected to be there that wasn't when you jumped.
A worthwhile download if you never played it on the Super NES. 8 out of 10
I rented this game for my NES many years ago and loved it, but hadn't played it since. Fantastic, challenging and addictive gameplay; catchy music (even if it is repetitive!); and what I think must be one of the toughest final bosses in video game history!
My only regret is that I downloaded this before Bubble Bobble Plus! came out for WiiWare. Save your Wii points for the new, souped-up version instead! 8 out of 10
Having never played this or any other NEO-GEO console game, and with my only exposure to NG games being a few of their arcade fighters, I decided to give this a try. I have to say it's pretty decent; very fast-paced, often funny and fairly challenging. It's not quite up to par with my favorite baseball game of all time, Ken Griffey, Jr. Presents Major League Baseball on the Super NES. Of course with all the licensing involved there, I have little doubt that classic will never make it to the Virtual Console. I'd give Baseball Stars 2 a 7 out of 10.
I know there will be a few repeats in here, so forgive me...
Crystalis / NES -- technically an SNK game, but I believe Nintendo owns the rights, since they published the horrendous Game Boy Color port. (This is my favorite game of all time; I lost my original copy, I can't find a decent emulator on my crummy computer, and I hate the GBC version. I actually sent Nintendo an e-mail asking for this game, and got a canned response... but we'll see.)
Golf / NES -- So basic, but I lost many hours of my youth on these virtual links!
EarthBound / Super NES -- Yeah yeah, just like everyone else.
Killer Instinct / Super NES -- Loved this fighting game
Stunt Race FX / Super NES -- A fun little SuperFX chip racing game. LOVED it!!!
Cruisn' World / Nintendo 64 -- Come on. It's not the worst racer ever...
Excitebike 64 / Nintendo 64 -- Hey, we got the original, so why not the sequel?
Killer Instinct Gold / Nintendo 64 -- One of the best arcade ports on the N64.
Mario Party / Nintendo 64 -- And parts 2 and 3, while they're at it!
Mario Tennis / Nintendo 64 -- We got Mario Golf, so...
Pilotwings 64 / Nintendo 64 -- Again, we got the original, but this one is sooooo much better!
