@CanisWolfred: Have you never said to yourself, 'what if this character could have that ability instead' or 'geez, if i'd written this movie/game/anime/book/whatever, i would've done (insert thing here) much differently'? how about 'oh man, what if (insert situation here) happened to (this character or set of characters)' or 'what if (so-and-so) was actually a(n) (alien/werewolf/policeman/etc.)'? Fanfiction can be an outlet for people who would like to have seen other things happen, or perhaps they genuinely wanted to explore a different idea with their favorite characters. They have a genuine love for what it is they've watched, read, or played and want to take that love farther on into the realm of creation. It doesn't always turn out amazing, and many fanfiction authors don't quite have the full-on writing skill to back up their ambitious ideas, but to question their status as 'fans' of something just because they've had another idea that the original author did not and chose to write it out is silly.

regarding the second part of your post, who are you to tell someone else what to do with their time? just because you personally think someone is great at (x), that doesn't mean they feel they're ready or that they even want to take it any farther than they are, perhaps they're happy for now. Sometimes it's fun to play with someone else's characters and someone else's world for a bit instead of going through the hassle of designing and creating your own. Perhaps you should try it sometime, just open a wordpad file and let fly. You may even wind up liking it. :3

if i'm trawling FF.net for something to read, i usually set the filters to show only 'complete' stories of 50,000 words or more, and perhaps to show characters and genres i'm interested in at the time. that tends to cut down most of the crap while i'm digging for a gem. if it's a series or a game i'm really, really into for some reason, i'll usually check and see if there's anything interesting fanficwise.

Update:

I e-mailed them the afternoon of the 14th as directed by Kody. As of a couple days ago (the 23rd), since I hadn't had any contact from the e-mail you had me get in touch with, Kody, i left them a message on the NF facebook page regarding my lack of receiving issue #3 after seeing someone else had commented on their then-most-recent post saying they also hadn't received their copy of #3. It was there, I know for a fact it posted successfully, and I just checked again today to see if there had been any response... nothing. My comment has mysteriously disappeared, and I also can't find the other comment that had been left by the other person saying they hadn't received their issue #3.

No e-mail contact, no reply via Facebook, no message in my FB inbox about my deleted comment, nothing. Someone else posting on their FB got a nice response, but I haven't even gotten a 'hey, we're looking into the problem for you, give us some time please' or 'i'm sorry, our records show that your copy was delivered successfully' which, though frustrating because i'll have to shell out for another copy, would still have been better than being ignored completely.

I'm very disappointed in how this is panning out. At this point, I have no idea whether or not I'll actually receive my copy of issue #4. i'd love to be pleasantly surprised, but i'm not holding my breath, and until they get their stuff together, in no way will i be recommending them to anyone — at least not via subscription. MagCloud delivered issue#1 promptly, and i'm sure they've got a more robust customer service department than NF's if something goes wrong. :/

@moomoo: ... so we've jumped from 'here are some statistics regarding players who beat the game and their chosen Shep gender' to 'almost all my guy friends chose to play as male Shepard' to 'i don't know any females IRL who chose to play Mass Effect, but the ones who played Skyrim all chose female avatars'? I don't really like where that seems to be going, especially in conjunction with "Game makers need to know their audience, and gender is a part of that.". I absolutely agree with that line, but not when you're attempting to use it along with anecdotal evidence to justify why there aren't female options available in the average video game. It strikes me as silly and shortsighted. the female gamer is someone to be embraced, not merely part of a percentage to be ignored until it hits some magical number of majority.

We're here. We're not going anywhere, and we're hungry for change. I'm excited to see what Nintendo has to offer, especially after the taste we got in Fire Emblem: Awakening, and no amount of anecdotal evidence from anyone or poor wording by inexperienced bigwigs is going to change my mind with regards to considering this A Good Thing.

Sorry, but I call BS on that one. Given the option, we as gamers have a new freedom to choose which gender we'd like to play. We are under no obligation to choose our own gender whatsoever, male or female, but we are made richer as a userbase just by having it there, and with the option being there with more regularity, perhaps we'll see in the future that sort of percentage also become narrower.

That's kinda the risk you run when you create a thread on a public forum — sometimes things don't turn out the way you originally envisioned. It happens. That doesn't make the thread any less valuable or worthwhile to the community, however. People are having fun.

If you recall, you asked me before about how to get more involved here at NL. This is one of those 'right place, right time' sorts of things i was talking about, where the climate is perfect (your thread), someone throws a decent pitch (AlexSays and his lack of comma usage), and someone else gets a good hit off of it (me~), setting everything up for what's to come. It's all in good fun. Besides, a 'serious' advice thread would probably wind up locked anyhow once the questions started getting too personal or touchy. :3

@Aviator: absolutely that was a ridiculous statement to make, but am I going to cut off my own nose to spite my face over it? naah. They made fools of themselves saying it that way, but I'm glad they're making the effort to welcome the girlfriends, the wives, the daughters who've for so long gone totally unnoticed. I'm not about to not support the sort of movement in gaming I've always dreamed of, not when it's finally shown up in its initial stages by a company I've loved since I was a little girl.

A few years of this down the line i might be more pissed to see them still floundering around like this, but here in the beginnings of their efforts to make good with those who want and/or have always wanted a female option, i'm willing to forgive these flubs for now.

@moomoo: We grew up and now live in a gaming world where 'male' has always been the norm. It's been a rarity to have 'female' as an option to choose from in terms of console gaming and main protagonists, which is probably why there's been no ridiculous outcry from male gamers — and again, you're right in that when there's a female main protagonist, there's usually a huge story propelling her character. How many games are out there, though, where you're just female by default for no other reason than the developers feeling a need to pick a gender for the character?

idk, i'm trying to help you guys to see things the way I'm seeing them. I hope I'm making some sort of sense.

@moomoo: speaking of 'social norms', it's currently the norm to be presented with a male protagonist to control. that's probably why they didn't bother pointing out either Alph or Charlie as male; it's naturally expected by gamers to be presented with male protagonists by default regardless of their given names. When you're marketing something, you point out what's new and improved about the formula (unless series or product staples are what people are looking for as opposed to innovations). Right now, the 'new and improved' is the fact that we're being given a female option.

and with all due respect, i am a girl. speaking as a female, you're right in that we probably wouldn't complain too much at controlling a male protagonist for the nth time provided the game is interesting enough on its own merits, and even when presented with an option that mirrors our gender, we may not even choose to use it. again, it's nice to have the option, and this sort of option is something we all (male and female gamers alike) should have had available to us long before now.

Or people play those games because they're fun

Nobody goes to the store and buys GTA because it'll make them 'superior'. Nintendo fans just have an inferiority complex and try to rationalize people playing mature games by saying they have psychological issues.

they don't buy GTA for that reason, no, but some do wind up posting about how playing these games instead of others makes them superior over other gamers for this or that reason, same as others buy E-rated games because they genuinely enjoy them and wind up on the internet posting about how their refusal to play M-rated games makes them superior for this or that reason. it's part of our darker or more selfish nature as human beings, the need to feel superior over others, to be the one who is right and to have anyone disagreeing be flat-out wrong.

This is why we have labels like 'hardcore' and 'casual', 'mature' and 'kiddy' being used by gamers to delineate sides so that they can denounce each other in rabid fashion. Problems are always the fault of the other side, whichever label they're wearing. It's all another game where the people playing think the way to win is to have enough people to shout down the other side, but in reality, the only way to win is not to play.

To respond to the OP — an 'M' rating is not the same as the word 'mature' as a label. the ESRB has specific guidelines laid out for the rating of video games so that adults may make an informed choice regarding which games they purchase for minors, or just people in general regarding which games they might like to play. For all intents and purposes they could have used 'stopwatch' or 'flashlight' as a keyword for the rating and it would still have the same intent behind it, but they chose the word 'mature' as a key word so that people would make the connection quickly that perhaps the game isn't going to be a wise birthday choice for their three-year-old niece or something.

Does Nintendo have M-rated games on their consoles? Not many.
Does Nintendo have games featuring complex plot structure and themes perhaps requiring advanced coordination, motor skill and finesse to complete on their consoles? Absolutely.
Will people continue to complain that Nintendo doesn't conform fully to their preferred label du jour? Sure.
Should it bother you? No. It's a never-ending cycle, one you have no control over whatsoever. Put forth your own thoughts if you're up to it, but don't allow the cycle to suck you in.

In short, it's not worth it to buy into the 'label everything, draw lines and choose your side' bullcrap that 'people' want to draw you into. let them have their fun playing their silly game of words on the internet. make your own decisions, play what you're genuinely interested in, and screw what anyone else has to say about it.
