@navi: didn't the sign ask for 'English and American', though? granted, i didn't see it for myself (and thus can't tell from the context whether it was written by a native English speaker or not), but from the sound of it, they're clearly asking for AmE as opposed to BrE or AuE. If they chopped it up a bit due to lack of finesse, more power to them for attempting to seek help for that, y'know? :3

also, given this thread, i thought the 'English' part was a given? Since we don't have an official language, a case could be made for 'American Spanish', 'American Creole', 'American this, that, and the other language' as well, but when people from outside countries think 'American', they think 'English'. You don't see East Asian businessmen learning French or Spanish in order to deal with American businessmen. You don't see workers at Indian call-centers taking classes and workshops to 'eradicate' their native accents in order to speak French or Spanish to American customers.

@Magi, @navi: given that American English is markedly different in terms of pronunciation, spelling, and patterns of speech, I think an argument does exist in terms of teaching/learning 'American' as opposed to British or Australian. Are they entirely different? No. Will a speaker of one understand the others? Possibly, but it depends on regional slang and/or speech pattern/word choices, and also the depths of the accent being taught.

Granted, to the complete beginner, the difference wouldn't be there, but in terms of a student actively looking to pick up an authentic American accent and natural vocabulary, i don't see how that's a problem. Same goes for the person describing their language as 'American' — at this point, it's kinda true IMO :3

during a raid, where performing the right action at the right time is absolutely critical, a touchscreen is no substitute for buttons to press. whether it's a controller, a keyboard, a gaming mouse with sixty-bazillion buttons on the side, or some combination thereof, you need to be able to fully concentrate on what's happening in the field of play, and you can't do that without the sure and certain knowledge that you're using the correct macros. you can't be forced to look away from the action in order to see what you need to do, and god forbid you accidentally use your last bit of mana to attack instead of heal, you touch the area of the screen that has you hearth back to town on accident, or you suddenly pull aggro instead of buffing your group's tank.

to have the touchscreen act as your inventory might be fun for a while, and to hold it up at the screen in order to see item descriptions would also be a way to implement the Wii U controller, but for serious players of the game, buttons are a necessity.

World of Warcraft (Activsion) (Launch)

no way in hell. they'd need to enable the ability to download patches, expansion packs, and — perhaps most importantly — it'd have to be lag-free in terms of online gameplay in order for a Wii U version to be in any way a relevant contribution to WoW in general. Nintendo has yet to prove they can do online without lag being an issue, and I wouldn't trust the Wii U to solve the problem(s) overnight.

that, and there's not near enough buttons on that controller. no serious WoW player would play a Wii U version for any length of time.

... now if they were to actually come up with a Warcraft stand-alone non-MMO title, they might have a chance of pulling off a hit, but... not WoW. no way.

No rational person would rate Mass Effect 3 (and a host of other games on both Metacritic and Amazon, and other places) that low. That's a collective vendetta that people have set out on.

therefore, if you liked it, everyone else who didn't is clearly just mad?

ChocoGoldfish wrote:

All that would be fine if Metacritic didn't put user ratings so big and bold on its website. They take up almost as much room as the published review average score, so to a layperson, they're going to seem just as legitimate as the published review score.

they're clearly marked, and at the top of the screen not only do they use a different shape, it's smaller. if people want to take user reviews into consideration, they can read through them on their own and make their own call; it's no different than asking opinions on a forum or asking a group of friends whether they liked something or not. to me it doesn't matter since that's not the thing I go there for, but if people want to express a negative opinion of something they've played, more power to them.

ChocoGoldfish wrote:

While I completely agree with the idea that users should be engaging with websites, commenting, using forums etc, and that fulfils a very important role akin to a real life discussion group, I'm never going to agree with user reviews, unless there was a quality control or moderation process, because reviews are by definition a commercial function and can have very serious commercial consequences when abused. We'll just have to agree to disagree on that.

There's a lot of things we'll never agree on. This is definitely one of them. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised that you'd take the side of the devs and publishers over anything the people have to say, though.

my guess would be that everything is relative — pretty sure I remember something about them trying to figure out what color to make the border around the 3D screen, and they switched it from white to black so that people could concentrate fully on the 3D or whatever. i'd imagine it was so much better just with the black that they didn't even think about the glossy surface until it was too late. perhaps we'll see a matte border in the next iteration? :3

... so you're saying that people can't have a negative opinion about a game unless they're in a position to earn more than it cost to develop the game in question? come on, man — that's pretty extreme, even for you up there on your normal 'i'm a journalist now shut up and listen to me' high-horse. if people were disappointed and didn't like it, they didn't like it. that's why they separate the 'user' reviews out from the overall score. that way the fans get to have their say, for good or for ill, and people who don't care what the average joe thinks can ignore it if they please.

@Waltz: if what lz said were true, the point would be that since you hate Nintendo, of course you would argue that Peggle is the superior game of the two. Thus, your statement(s) regarding the game and its dev would need to be taken with a healthy pinch of salt given your in-that-case natural predisposition to dislike SM3DL (and anything else Nintendo put forth for that matter). It's kinda like you talking about anything Gameloft's ever put out, or anything Samurai Warriors-related — in both of those instances, we know full well how far out your natural bias goes, and thus we would perhaps need to seek more balanced opinions to get a truer idea of what's going on.

why does anyone get bent out of shape over any award show? they're fans of things, and those things aren't chosen as winners.
