Ok, I'll give you that. I've never tried watching a Ghibli (or any foreign film) as background noise.

i do a lot of stuff IRL where i just need something going on in the background, whether music or a movie playing — drawing, painting, cleaning things, etc. and so forth. if it's a movie I've seen a bazillion times over, I can deal with listening to the original Japanese audio, but sometimes i like to listen to what they're saying in plain old English, y'know? :3

as for the current question, YYH all the way. Kuwabara is mah boi~

I said it was obtuse and frustrating - the limited lives, having to restart the world every time I fail one lousy jump, and most importantly on every world there was something that I didn't know how to do, and had to look up online. What if it was 1992 and I didn't have the internet? What, was I supposed to get the Guide book if I wanted to have any hope of finishing this game?!

You have the option now, and that's what separates your current experience from what your experience would've been back then. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to look anything up online or splurge for a Prima guide; you're just giving in to temptation. Own your weakness.

If you need extra lives, Super Mario World uses the same 1-up mechanics from the original Super Mario Bros. game (collect 100 coins, kill 8+ enemies with one shell/jump on 8+ enemies without touching the ground) plus more (carry an item past the finish line, win them in special areas, etc.) and actually makes it all easier for you to exploit with the 're-enter a level, get 1-ups, press start and select to exit, wipe hands, repeat' process. If I remember correctly, this was all explained in the instruction manual for the game when it originally came out, so there's no excuse for not having known these things, whether now (with the help of Dr. Internet) or back in the day.

Once you've got enough lives, exploring the levels is a piece of cake — Super Mario World even goes out of its way to make it easier for you with the saved powerup at the top of the screen, mid-level checkpoints, the red-marked levels denoting multiple exits, and the ability to re-enter beaten levels to pick up powerups and/or a Yoshi if necessary before entering a particularly difficult level. You not taking the time to explore the levels to their fullest is not the fault of the developers, nor does it make the level design 'bad' in and of itself.

If you're truly that bad at 2D Mario games, one tip I always like to pass on is 'just run'. If you're quick enough, you can run (or fly) through just about every level (aside from the underwater ones and the ones that automatically scroll, and in terms of flying there's a couple levels that have pipes that go all the way up and cut the level in half). After that, practice makes perfect. If you'd get into the right frame of mnd as opposed to trying to slog through it, hating every step, you'd probably get a lot farther.

Re: Trigun Movie VS Castle in the Sky - Best ANIME Tournament

theblackdragon

^ there's something to be said for being able to turn a movie on as background noise and being able to understand what's going on without having to constantly look at the screen. under normal circumstances i prefer subtitles, but if the dub is well done (as has been the case with the more recent Studio Ghibli films to be brought westward), i don't see why it's inherently a stupid idea to have done so.

That's not the only way to take damage there. I fear to go into those caves. The nopon delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in, the darkness of the lava cave? Shadow and flame.

And it's guarding a magical hot rock that I need in order to set up camp and progress the story (ah, the sweet smell of RPG filler).

(b) you should be able to warp out, grind, and then come back in if that battle is bothering you. i'm pretty sure it took me about four tries before i finally beat it; sometimes these boss battles are up to the luck of the 'being able to get the B-button jump on 'em and then bring the pain' draw, it seems. :3

Dan is correct; if you have a US DSi, you'll need to either purchase a North American DSi Points card or use a credit card that has a US address to buy your points through the DSi Shop. There are usually places online to purchase points cards for any region, though. :3

Re: Removing glue from game cases

theblackdragon

@Wheels: With rubbing alcohol and some glues (like sticker glues) you need to soak the glue-y area with it, and then it comes off quite easily.

that said, for all cleaning intents and purposes, clear oil is oil is oil. you probably could've used baby oil if you had any (though olive oil is usually more common in a house nowadays i think) or potpourri/fragrance oil (but that'd be a pain to clean up, and your game box would be perma-scented lol) and it would've had the same effect. :3
