Every single cafe in Australia (and Japan, for that matter), including our Starbucks, understands iced chocolate and long black. Those are staples. While I try not to assume when I'm in a foreign country, that one threw me.

i hate to break it to you, but i've never heard of those... and i've bought a looooooooot of fancy coffee drinks in my day D:

so? lol, do you know how many times I've been asked directions to a random nearby landmark, which restaurant has the best blah-blah-blah, or what other store would carry (insert item you have absolutely no experience with here)? surely you got those sorts of questions during your own retail days :3

Wheels2050 wrote:

Nevertheless, my problem isn't that she didn't understand, but that I've noticed a lot of people don't even ATTEMPT to help you out and offer suggestions or figure out what you're looking for. They just stare at you while you fumble around in your brain trying to remember what an American calls it. I've had this happen on multiple occasions. I'm not assuming all Americans do that - that would be unfair - but in my experience, it happens a lot.

that's retail, man — it happens to all of us — and a University store? i'm assuming students are behind the counter at that kind of place? if so, that's like double-retail in terms of 'they probably don't give a crap' (no offense to college kids, it's just that i've worked alongside too many of you :3)... either way, in a retail situation i'd chalk that kind of thing up to laziness or apathy long before i'd chalk it up to any sort of potential language barrier, lol.

that question is drummed into their brains... it's like 'would you like fries with that' even if you already ordered them — i've done food service before too. your brain kinda goes numb after a while, and you won't even realize you said something totally idiotic until about an hour after you said it, even if the person called you out on it right when it happened.
food service does strange things to you

@Waltz: ... did they even have that item on their menu? if not, you can't really fault them for not knowing what you're talking about when you come in and ask for it by name, lol... even a big international chain like Starbucks has its regional quirks :3 to be honest, though, i kinda hate going into coffee shops sometimes; they've all got their own names for stuff the other chains carry, and sometimes you'll get the wrong thing entirely if you ask for Shop A's item-name at Shop B on accident

to be fair, that could just as easily be attributed to the fact that new stuff hits all the time — for all the girl knew, you may have been asking for a new type of actual ring, like for a finger, but in the shape of a key. I know i've made that sort of mistake myself while working retail, someone will come in asking for something totally weird and i'll be about to send them in the wrong direction until they explain exactly what it is they want, and we'll carry it under a different term than what they were using. that sort of thing isn't limited to foreigners or immigrants, my friend; we do it to our own too :3

Re: What do you think the future of the Wii U will be?

theblackdragon

@WaveBoy: My mom had one of those she used for work (she worked for a home healthcare agency at the time and they'd transfer the office phone over to that big old clunky cell for weekend emergencies)... it wasn't that great. the sound is much clearer on newer phones than it was on that old thing, it didn't hold that long of a charge if you had to use it a lot iirc, and it was honestly just awkward and heavy to carry around. It's fun to say you'd like one of those things, but i'd wager in practice you'd set it aside for an average modern not-quite-smartphone soon enough — and that's if you could find a carrier willing to give you a plan for the thing in the first place. :3

Now if we could get back to the topic at hand, please, I'd greatly appreciate it, guys. Thank you! :3

@MetalGearZelda: If you're maining Shulk (or if you have him in your party), that's probably your problem right there. remember that the Monado won't hurt people from the Bionis [the assassins]... if you pay close attention to the damage numbers, you'll see Shulk isn't hitting for beans. Switch up your party (i switched Shulk out for Rikii myself) and you should be good to go (unless you're somehow massively underleveled, in which case, go level s'more lol).

all righty, then — I do believe we've covered what this topic set out to cover. no, the American Revolutionary War isn't covered in detail in British schools (and on a slight tangent, Retro reports that supposedly Spanish schools don't teach about Mexicans gaining their independence either; take that as you will :3). now, go on out and enjoy the rest of your 4th if you celebrate it, guys — there's plenty of fireworks out there to be seen :3

Re: Question for people in Great Britain

@TrueWiiMaster: It may seem odd to some Americans, since it's pretty much the founding of our country, but what about all the other colonies Britain had during their days of Empire? the 13 original colonies weren't the first British colonies, and they weren't the last, either. this amazing list details all the territories they've had their hands on over the centuries, can you see yet why perhaps we form only a small portion of their curriculum, if any at all? and that's just their days of Empire — again, they've got an incredibly rich history to cram into however many years of mandatory schooling they put their children through (which isn't nearly enough to go into all of it in detail, I'm sure).

if you consider all of that, it doesn't seem that odd at all.

@Waltz: lol idk, but if people think it's strange that other countries don't focus on our Revolutionary War, perhaps they should consider the Koreans and Vietnamese may already feel similarly.

@SamuraiShyGuy: i wouldn't go flinging the word 'better' around like that — every teacher has their priorities and methods of teaching that work best for them and what they're trying to get across to their classes. in the end, it's not reasonable to expect a child to make it through the K-12 school system and have learned everything about the history of every single country in the world throughout their educational career up to that point; it's up to the child to have the drive and curiosity to do their own research, make their own choices, and learn these intricacies on their own afterthefact.

I'm very surprised to hear in this thread that it's not even taught in Britain. In America we have classes in American history and world history, so for British students not to be taught about their own history seems absurd to me. You can't just cut out the pieces in history you don't like.

you're joking, right? Our own history classes gloss over Vietnam and the Korean Wars at best (they don't call Korea 'the forgotten war' for no reason). why is it so surprising to learn that what's a big deal in one country's history is just a blurb to another country? they've got other things to learn about — like the rest of their countries' histories, lol.

you gotta remember that America is a pretty young country when compared to places in Europe. We can take the time to focus on a blip in history like the Revolutionary War because we have the luxury of doing so. They've got monarchies and/or dynasties to trek through in order to know themselves.
