Small children shouldn't even be playing this game if they can't get past the first level. Final level? Fine.

Really? Because I remember helping my little brother and sister play SMB back in the day when they couldn't get past the first level without assistance or direction. The only thing the White Tanooki Suit is doing is helping those kids get past obstacles instead of leaving them to the goombas or at the mercy of an older sibling. If you don't want to use it, don't use it. No one's forcing you to do so.

Guys, Nintendo is not publishing this game. I fully agree with Nintendo's right not to develop or publish 'offensive' games itself. What Nintendo is doing is denying another company the license to publish its game on Nintendo's platform. My problem with this is Nintendo is playing the role of a censor here, and frankly, we should all be concerned when corporations begin to dictate what material we can or cannot access.

Yes, Nintendo is not a monopoly (thank God), but the philosophy or thought process running behind Nintendo's (and Sony, and Microsoft, they're all the same in this regard) decision to limit what material we can experience in our own homes is downright dangerous.

There is a massive difference between state censorship - which may be appropriate depending on the dominant attitudes of the people the state represents, and corporations, which are not bodies we want to leave responsible for social morality.

In other words this is a philosophical debate that extends well past a single game :P hopefully that clears the air here.

Considering Nintendo has been doing this same exact thing since the 1980's (choosing which games to officially license for their systems, e.g. the Wisdom Tree games vs. the Nintendo Seal of Quality — they haven't just blocked games that show religion in a negative light, y'know) with no ill effects on the industry as a whole (otherwise tBoI wouldn't even be playable on Steam), I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill. This kind of internal censorship is the exact kind of thing that fueled the Console Wars (blood in Mortal Kombat, anyone? my friends with Genesis-es used to gloat all the time), and that sort of competition is great for the marketplace.

Nothing wrong with electronica or raves at all IMO.

The problem with things like this is that they start small and gradually grow in popularity until they become mainstream, which is kinda the point electronica is at right now. You went from having to trade mixtapes and be invited to these huge rave parties to being able to stream podcasts via Mixcloud and purchase tickets to see a big-name DJ live from Ticketmaster.com. That's about when the people 'who liked before it was cool' start to reject it and what it's evolved into over the years, and there's two ways to go about it all: you can either sit and bemoan the perceived dilution or loss of whatever you thought was so special about (insert interest here), or you can remember the great times you had, embrace the fact that so many people are now able to enjoy something that was so hard to get into before, and take the opportunity to introduce the next generation(s) of people who enjoy (insert interest here) to parts of it that you yourself enjoyed very much. It's up to you.

Should you decide to go down the latter path, we've got a music thread here where people are sharing videos of their favorite songs and discussing — you're more than welcome to join them if you like. :3

@Waltz: Nintendo is a video game company, a major corporation. Their only 'moral obligation' is to their shareholders and investors, period. They're taking the steps they feel are necessary to preserve their image and userbase by making the decision to allow production of this game here and not that game there, as would any other company faced with such a set of choices. Nintendo has never purported to allow every single game submitted to them to be produced for their system(s). It's not like these guys were given a 3DS devkit, wrote the game specifically for this system, were told that their ideas were great and wonderful and oh yes we'll totally release this and then right as it came time to do so shot 'em down cold.

For the third and final time, you would have a point if there were absolutely, positively no other route for the tBoI devs to take with their game, but that's not the issue here at all. The game is already out for a major distribution service. People have downloaded the hell out of it, are probably downloading it now, are more than likely firing it up to go at it again with all the controversy one of these articles inevitably stirs up. You're not barred in any way from playing this game right now, you just (probably) won't be playing it on a Nintendo console. You have the option to buy a console or a computer that will play the game, though, just like how you have the right to patronize any other storefront that does or does not carry an item you want to purchase, a movie theater that will or won't carry a movie you want to see, a restaurant that does or doesn't serve a food you want to eat. you're getting soapboxy over nothing.

@OlympicCho: They've got the right to do whatever they please with what they're manufacturing. What you're arguing is that Nintendo has some kind of moral obligation to make anything and everything submitted to them available on their various platform(s), which is not true. Again, there is nothing to stop anyone from playing this game right now except possibly parental controls (idk how they work on Steam or not) and access to proper equipment, neither of which are any different than being able to afford a console and/or get past a parental lockout, really.

If you could cut the snark in your arguments, btw, I'd greatly appreciate it. It's not warranted at all.

@Rayword45: The first paragraph of our Community Rules clearly states the following:

... use common sense and don't use profanity. We retain the right to edit or remove any posts deemed offensive or inappropriate.

they also state farther down that

Blatantly offensive posts directed at others will not be tolerated.

if you're asking why things were edited on the first page of this thread, there were a few profanities and then an insult that I edited out in order to preclude the sort of rabid arguing that generally gets threads locked. if you've got any more questions or need clarification on anything, feel free to get in touch. :3

There is an oversensitivity about the games industry. That's not to say you can't be offended by a game/ movie, but censorship? No. Bad.

Not all movies are shown everywhere — the one you're referring to only saw a limited release here in the US, for example. It wasn't banned, it just wasn't carried at all chains. This is the same thing IMO — the game has already been released. People can play it right now if they have a computer that'll run Steam. If Nintendo chooses not to carry tBoI, buy a console that (eventually) will.

they certainly seem hopeful in that article, though. let's face it, if Microsoft wanted the game that badly they'd have long since already signed paperwork for it.
