Why should I, or anyone else care about what you'd enjoy either?

If you didn't care, you wouldn't be attempting to use anecdotal evidence about one child as proof that all female gamers are actually okay with the status quo as-is and change in player-character representation in terms of (near-)silent protagonists isn't desired on any level. You're talking about what you want, not what she wants, because you can't speak for her (or anyone else for that matter).

Last I checked, this topic was about Link's gender, not another sexuality debate. We can either get back on topic or i can lock the thread — or i can start banning people who refuse to respect Nintendo Life's decision regarding these tangents when they crop up. The choice is yours, guys.

As for the topic at hand:

shaneoh wrote:

This long between metroid games certainly feels like reincarnation. But it is the same Link being reincarnated again and again, not just in gender, but in personality as well. He's not just being spun out into the world as a random person, but into a specific role...

Firstly, personality is not dependent on gender, and the role of the Hero of Time has never been officially stated to be gender specific. Secondly... what personality? This is Link we're talking about, he brings about as much personality to the table as a doorknob. He is intentionally written as a blank slate through which the player interacts with Hyrule. giving us the choice in how our Link looks and sounds on screen will only help us to identify with him or her more.

shaneoh wrote:

Link's gender has become fixed, and my niece doesn't care one bit, she is loving OoT 3D and doesn't care that the protagonist is a male.

While that's awesome for your niece and I'm glad she's enjoying some quality games, forgive me for being blunt about it, bit why do I care? I'm talking about my experience and what i'd like to see in a Zelda game, not hers. Perhaps someday she, too, will wonder why Link has never been given the chance to be reborn as a girl to better serve her own playing experience (surely it must be boring for an endlessly reborn spirit to have no variety in ye olde mortal shell?), or why she can't choose to be a female character in classic gaming staples as the option grows more and more common in the future, who knows?

Also, i'm not sure who exactly started up the 'females aren't as physically strong biologically as males' argument, but for pete's sake, does any of the rest of the game follow real-life science as we know it? We've got elves, fish-people, magic and goddesses and spirits and great looming evils threatening to swallow the world, i'm pretty sure a bit of difference in hand-grip strength won't matter when you've got the same bracelets or whatever Link gets to pick up stones (remember, he can't do so without help!), the same bombs to blow up big rocks, the same tunic to help breathe underwater, and the same Iron Boots to keep you on the sumo platform. Link himself gets a lot of help in terms of special items. surely they'd help a female Hero of Time do the same in a future adventure.

and as for Zelda and Ganon being potentially all switched up gender-wise, bring it on! Wouldn't mind seeing a wicked female Ganon attempt to fool its enemies by presenting itself in female form for once, wouldn't that potentially throw the ol' king of hyrule for a loop? Though male Zelda has sorta been done before via Sheik, i wouldn't mind seeing more of that either — whether an actual change in gender or more dress-up, Sheik was pretty awesome :3

What would be really fun is if they made it so that you could play the game from two different viewpoints, as either Link or Zelda. I don't mean it just changes what character you play as - the game is completely different for each characters. We saw a bit of this at the end of Skyward Sword, where we saw flashbacks from Zelda's point of view. Taking that to the next level and creating an entirely separate games with different paths and goals would essentially give us double the game.

I like you. This is kinda what i meant by having a Zelda game with part of it played through as Link and part as Zelda. :3

Didn't we already have this discussion in the Gender Bias thread? To sum up my arguments there:

(a) Almost every Link we've played is a brand new person born however-many years after Hyrule was saved (or not saved) last. We're (or I'm) not asking that history be rewritten to have established Links suddenly turned female, just for Nintendo to give us the option to choose what fits the player best going forward. It's a new Hero of Time, it's a new adventure. The comparison to Samus keeps coming up, and it doesn't apply — she's not reincarnated between games. Link is.

(b) Miyamoto himself has said in the past that the reason they keep Link a silent protagonist is to allow the player to better project themselves and their own character onto Link. Offering options to non-males (females at least would get us rolling) would greatly aid the immersion process. I used Halo: Reach as my example of how it's already been done by the competition, a largely silent protagonist is given a male or female form and voice in all cutscenes and gameplay depending on the player's settings. Reach is a great game, the Halo series absolutely does not suffer for having had a gender-customizable main character in one of their titles, and I was able to listen and play and feel like that was me on the screen fighting aliens and doesn't afraid of anything-ing. I can never do that with a Zelda game.

(c) For the one of you here and maybe two of you in the other thread arguing that there would be same-sex relations if Link were possibly female, there's never any real interaction between Zelda and Link, he never 'gets' the princess. When do we see anything on screen beyond shy glances or her telling him he has to save Hyrule? He may as well be gender neutral in all his current incarnations for all the passion and romance he's never shown, so I don't see where 'well he's kissed a princess!' holds much water. Link is always 'hey imma kill this oktorok now' as Zelda spends 90% of her time cooped up in a tower or a castle or sleeping forever or otherwise incapacitated, lol, so it's not as if she'd be guaranteed another kiss in another adventure.

(d) And for those who may be hung up on the name (there was one in the other thread, just covering bases here), Zelda hasn't always been named 'Zelda'. There is past precedent for her name not being set in stone. If Nintendo wants to offer 'Link' and 'Linka' as default names for their provided options, it's not like it'll never have been done before.

In fact, the only good argument i've seen so far against offering a choice was the one where there were a few users who wanted an honest-to-goodness story out of the next Zelda game, no more bland silent protagonist but a robust male hero with dialogue and personality and princess-saving romance and whatnot. I think it'd be nice if they were able to write one that went both ways, Link's playable portion and Zelda's playable portion (she could still have those Sheik skills~) as two star-crossed lovers forever tasked by a looming evil they must keep under control else all will perish in fire and darkness. But if Nintendo continues on with Miyamoto's vision of a 'bland' Link, there is no reason he could not be a 'she' in future games, so I for one would very much appreciate a choice in gender for my protagonist. You play your file as a male if you prefer, and she'll be female in mine.

[Note: i wouldn't mind playing as Zelda and in fact have suggested that myself in the past. However, being forced to play as her still isn't really a proper choice.]

@Creeper: 'BadKitty' is not slang for anything, she's a kitten for pete's sake. Way to victim-blame and generalize, though, A+ job telling her that she can't have a 'sexy' avatar without expecting random fools to make perverted assumptions. Do you tell victims of sexual assault that they should've dressed like bums too? And way to assume that other people will behave poorly; to the best of my knowledge i have never seen another user here make that kind of statement about Emmy.

anyway, Aviator wins the thread, as usual. The 'female' answer to Call of Duty is Call of Duty, provided it features female soldiers as playable characters along with male soldiers. The end.

I'd love to be able to just go ahead and trade in my 360 against the thing, but Reach in particular I think I'd have a hard time not being able to play :(

I mean for game plot ideas. Listening to fans who want a new Star Fox game or who really, really like the GameCube controller is one thing, but taking suggestions regarding specific plot ideas would open them up to litigation. It's why a lot of authors or musicians may claim to not read or listen to their contemporaries' works abd will refuse fan-mail containing ideas for future stories or songs, they don't want to come under fire for having taken ideas from others without permission and/or compensation.

@Shingi: actually, I'm pretty sure the Rookie is male in all cutscenes and during campaign play, though i think you can customize your character in Firefight (idk, i prefer Reach's version of Firefight to ODST's so i've been playing a lot of that, lol). Reach, though, all cutscenes definitely reflect the gender chosen by the player (and if you're playing split-screen with another person of opposite gender, the cutscenes reflect whoever's on the top screen). I really loved Reach, i wanted to cry at the end , just like for Crisis Core.

You're right, retconning historically male characters into females isn't the answer. However, your analogy is flawed. In terms of Link, it's not about asking that the Statue of David be granted ladyparts, we're asking that perhaps Michelangelo consider a female option for his next great masterpiece in the series, since they're all (well, with few exceptions) different people.

also, @Dreamz, i would play the hell outta that game, no lie. Too bad Nintendo doesn't take suggestions from the public ;___;

@TechnoTaylor: It's a new 'Link', though — i'm not talking about rewriting an existing Link to be female, I'm talking about going on with the series, it's a new Hero of Time and a new person named Link, it could easily be male or female depending on how you want to play it through — you make him male in your game, I'll make her female in mine. and heck, maybe the Hero of Time will someday have a brand new name of their own anyway to break up the 'Link' monotony, haha. Or maybe in a future game, 'Link' will turn out to be merely a ceremonial title bestowed unto one who proves themselves to be the Hero of Time, and they're not actually called that during their lifetime?

There is no such thing as "gender neutral".

I know you're being obtuse for a reason, but what I'm trying to say is that Link's gender is completely unimportant as far as the story is concerned, so why would it matter so much if suddenly the Hero of Time was female for some people and male for others? Choice in this situation would help to include the female audience, fully insert them into the uber-bland player character Nintendo has historically been so keen to keep as plain as possible in order for the audience to identify with them. Why not take that extra step to insert us into his or her psyche even further? Especially given that 'Link' as we know him (or her, or it even) is a being incarnated whenever Hyrule is in dire need of saving. Most of the 'Links' we've ever played as have been different people, it's not like Snake or Master Chief or Mario or Sonic or any other major character who either never dies or hasn't died yet.

I remember bringing up the idea of a female-incarnated Link and being shot down about it years ago. It's nice to see the same argument come up again, and interesting to see how the responses have mellowed somewhat. I've never seen the huge fuss about whether Link is male or female. His character is always so bland he could easily be completely gender-neutral, and it's not like he and Zelda ever wind up in any kind of torrid romance with one another — nothing beyond 'you must save the princess' and then eyes meeting shyly in a garden, anyway — so why is giving the player an option such a big deal? If it helps some of us to identify with the main character a little easier, who cares?

i gotta say, coming from Halo: Reach on this one, where the main character pretty much says and does the exact same stuff whether male or female and the only differences in gameplay are cosmetic... it was still quite nice to be able to choose my gender, to not have to be locked in a male form for the duration of my game, and to actually have the in-game grunts and groans sound like a female. yeah, i'm in front of the TV cursing a blue streak at having to drive a stupid Warthog around while an NPC sits back and doesn't bother gunning anything down, but it helps me to identify with the main character, helps me to believe that it's me who just sniped an Elite, it's me who just got gunned down by a freakin' Hunter i hadn't seen coming. Given that every Link is apparently a reincarnation of the same spirit, having each and every one of them be male seems shortsighted and boring. It would be more natural I think, since we're technically the 'spirit' guiding each and every Hero of Time to their ultimate victory (or defeat, if the 'timeline' is to be believed lol~), if we were given the option to choose the gender of our Links.

holy crap, check out that list of people WWE released today. guess they're trying to trim some of the fat after those disappointing PPV/WWE Network sub numbers?

@Rosalina: yeah, someitmes it takes a minute for the cache to refresh itself when you're changing avatars. :3
@GuardianKing: She's still naked and it's still getting reported by other users. Please, either post an image of her wearing the coverage equivalent of a proper bathing suit or, if that's impossible due to her running around naked in her original media, please choose another character for your avatar this round.

so... the Master Chief Collection, plus a brand new Doom on the horizon. Congrats, M$, the latter alone would've been enough to sell me an Xbone, but the former (with remastered Halo 2 anniversary goodness) is the glorious icing on the cake. hell yes.

if they do a MCC bundle, that's probably what I'll be picking up this November. what I'm wondering, though, is whether or not I'm gonna hafta re-earn all this stuff again for my custom armor in Halo 4 whether there's some way to transfer all of that over. It's not like having to look like the default is gonna stop me from playing it through again, but i know part of me is gonna be all 'oh come onnnnnnnn, i just unlocked that', haha, so now i'm wondering if i should hold off on starting 4 after i've finished 3.
