Re: Worst Video Game?

theblackdragon

i'd have to go with the '89 TMNT game for the NES. i remember my brother and I played the hell out of that game, no guides, no nothin', and we could never get past that stupid turtle-van section of the game where you had to find the missiles and then the ropes to get across the buildings and stuff. i've never seen the ending of that game.

on a related note, that was the first AVGN episode i ever saw, and i would say he was freaking spot-on.

take out the SD card. on the side should be a teeny tiny little plastic tab that moves... it's like a 3.5" floppy, where you move the little tab to write protect it.

Looks like that might be the problem. Here's what the manual says about playable file formats for DSi Sound:
AAC files with .m4a, mp4, or .3gp filename extensions
Bitrate: 16 kbps to 320 kbps
Sampling rate: 32 kHz to 48 kHz

Try using iTunes to convert your files (highlight files, right-click, then 'create AAC version' -- you can also rip CDs straight into AAC format via Preferences or Options IIRC, and you can set your default bitrates there too); it saves them as .m4a, and they play just fine on my DSi. :3

what program did you use to convert them?
what extension (*.blahblahblah) were they given after conversion?
will the files play on your computer? from the SD card itself?
did you properly dismount the volume/stop the removable device before disconnecting it from your computer?

Re: Considering Homebrew to play missing games

theblackdragon

did you upgrade your Wii to System Menu 4.0 yet? if you have, homebrew may not be an option for you at the moment, as 4.0 rendered the Twilight Hack unusable.

If you haven't upgraded yet, you should be good to go, just be careful if they end up packaging system updates in with those games. updating your system with an update from the wrong region (a PAL update for a NTSC/US Wii, for example) will semi-brick your wii.

here's what you can choose from under Advanced Setup --> Manual Setup --> Security (Change Security Settings):
WEP
WPA-PSK(TKIP)
WPA2-PSK(TKIP)
WPA-PSK(AES)
WPA2-PSK(AES)

if you don't go through Advanced Setup (you just choose a connection and go to Manual Setup through there), all you can choose is WEP under Security Settings.

Re: Finally own a DS...

theblackdragon

re: Chrono Trigger DS -- If you ever played CT from FFChronicles for the PlayStation, it's got all that bonus material, same FMVs and all, as well as a couple new things (two new dungeons and an arena to battle monsters against each other). They moved the menus and stuff down to the bottom screen (so all you see on the top screen during battles is the sprites on their background, makes for a nice uncluttered look), and as you're going through a place, there's a map that unfolds on the bottom screen (like in FFIV DS). they also retranslated it, so it's supposed to be more accurate to the original Japanese script now.

as for franchises you may have grown up with, the ports/remakes of FFIII and IV are both good. Star Fox Command, i would recommend borrowing from a friend before buying, as it seems to be a hit-or-miss kind of game. Mario Kart DS, Mario 64 DS (if you liked the original; if not, skip it), and New Super Mario Bros. are all solidly fun games, and if you liked Kirby Super Star for the SNES, Kirby Super Star Ultra is more of the same (it's got a couple updated subgames, but note that to really enjoy the multiplayer stuff you need two cartridges; single-cartridge download play only lets you play through Spring Breeze).

for things you may not have grown up with, The World Ends with You is a great game (definitely an example of 'don't judge a game by its cover'). If you like visual novel type games, the Phoenix Wright series is good (and chances are you can find all four games used so you won't have to bother paying full retail price :3).

Shadow007 wrote:

When does the offer for the double coins end/expire?

It only gives you 160 coins for registering your DSi, so stuffgamer1 must only have about that much in their Club Nintendo account, lol. In the FAQ under Product Registration (can i register and take surveys on all products --> systems), it says you get coins for registering and then linking your DSi Shop account to your CN account, and farther down (why should I register my nintendo products) it states you get 160 coins for registering, like it's a further incentive to do so (it doesn't say anything about an end date or a time limit). The paper documentation provided with the DSi is ambiguously worded, though, and says nothing about earning coins specifically for registering/linking your DSi shop account, so there's some wiggle room for Nintendo if they decide to change their mind down the line.

As a side-note, DSiware (like Wiiware) is only eligible for post-play surveys. Also, if you choose not to link your accounts or fill out the initial survey, you'll still get the 90-day warranty extension regardless.

posting this via dsi, lol. the handwriting recognition is a pain at the moment, it keeps picking my 't's up as '+'s. :3 the internet is a little slow, but it would get the job done in a pinch.

as for other new features, the microphone (and audio playback) are surprisingly good.

also, for some reason, when connecting to the internet via usb Wi-Fi Connector, it showed our usernames at first (in the window that opens on the computer), and then when everything was all settled in it switched over to some random Korean gibberish. i dunno what's up with that, but it never happened before with our lites, lol.

just picked mine up from GameStop, and holy crap, you weren't kidding. when they handed me the box, i thought it felt kinda heavy... most of that weight turned out to be the manual. It's very nicely packaged, though. I like that you can lay the box flat and open it up instead of having to slide everything out the end of the box like the lite. anyway, it's charging at the moment, so no other real impressions yet. :3

if you've got a Club Nintendo account, you can register it there (90 extra days added to your warranty), and if you link your DSi account with your Club Nintendo account they'll give you 160 coins. that'll kick me up to platinum status for the year, w00t.

Re: Favourite and least favourite bits of Nintendo Life

re: the NA/US deal, Wikipedia already uses 'NA' and 'PAL' side-by-side (mixing the descriptors instead of using NTSC or EU respectively). I think it's safe to say Americans will be smart enough to figure out what 'NA' means in context, though if you did want to use NTSC, it would need to be NTSC-U/C (or NTSC-NA?) to differentiate from NTSC-J.

as for other suggestions, I'm with Digiki -- if there's any way to get the entire page instead of just the newest comment(s) when I click the number for the latest page in a thread, that would be awesome.

Ah, if we included any game with the name Tetris, yes, that would be my favorite. But that is actually part of Nintendo's Puzzle League series, just with the Tetris name attached to it. It's not a "Tetris" game in any other sense; doesn't even have tetronimoes. I'm still sad we'll probably not see it on VC. The Yoshi's Island theme worked so well for it, and I hear the N64 Pokemon version is annoying... Guess I'll cave in and get it anyway unless they announce a generic Puzzle League for WiiWare (fingers crossed).

Yeah, that's why I said it wasn't like normal Tetris. It confused the hell out of me at first, lol. I'll bust out my SNES before bothering with the Pokemon version, though -- I can't stand how Pokemon was being plastered all over everything back when that came out. I missed Planet Puzzle League when it came out for the DS, so after Moving Memo, the next thing I'm looking forward to is them translating the DSiware Puzzle League game.

If Tetris Attack is DQ'd, then I'd have to choose Tetris DS. With all the different modes to play, i can't say i've ever really gotten bored with it. Every time I go back to it, it's still fun to play.
