I'm with you guys. At least when you die in Lost Levels, you can restart from the beginning of the level as many times as you like (or at least you can with the VC version; dunno how the actual Famicom cartridge worked 'cuz i never had one :)). SMB2, you get three continues and then you're back to square one.

The Super Mario All-Stars version wasn't bad, because it auto-saved for you when you reached a new level and you could start from that over and over again, actual continues be damned. That incarnation of SMB2, I liked. The original, though... I can only beat it with the warps. I don't like having to warp to get through a game. :/

sorry, i've only got experience with PC issues, but apparently you're not the only one who's had problems with DS/DSis and AirPort not getting along. here's an article i was able to find via google; i hope it helps. if not, here's an AirPort thread on Nintendo's Tech Support forums, and here's another thread on the Apple discussions forum regarding a DSi unable to connect through AirPort. :)

I went through the first two pages of google results for 'japanese dsi virtual console'... every single page (gizmodo, pcauthority.com. stuff.tv, softpedia, wikipedia, smashgamers.com, computerandvideogames.com, gamersreports.com, play.tm, splegends.com, etc.) that had anything to say about a Japanese VC for DSi was quoting kombo.com... and half of those articles were quoting the original kombo article (pre-edit) as truth. :/

the only thing not related to kombo that I was able to find was an article on gonintendo.com -- here it is -- where their trusted source at a different nintendo dsi event heard the same thing (VC is coming for DSi) from the representative present.

either way, the president of NoA had an interview with Wired.com recently where he says, "The concept of Virtual Console on DSi is not something that we've talked about, nothing that we've commented on. I know it's something many of your readers would like to see, but it's not something that we've talked about,"... so he's either covering it up, or they really aren't working on it at the moment (surely Nintendo of Japan would keep the Nintendo of America president informed about upcoming features/announced features, wouldn't they?).

I don't remember where and would have trouble finding it again, but I found another site reporting the same thing separately (from another guy who went to one of those pre-release events), which leads me to believe that the feature WAS mentioned at some of them.

if you go through the comments on the Kombo post, the dude who was there at the event for them posted that he had heard that straight from the lips of the person speaking to him, and had even questioned them about what they had just said, and then after the article was published they got the call from Nintendo. There's no telling whether or not the representative doing the talk was just confused on that fact herself, though, or whether it was actually true (and i hope it's true :D).

as for what game I'd like to see first? Superstar Saga! I never had a GBA when that came out, I never got to play it, and everyone says it's better than Partners in Time (which was a disappointment, IMO; there was only one part in the game I really liked and that was it :/). I would love to have that available. :3

edit: why do I keep saying Kotaku? It was Kombo.com... o_O;;

from the Kombo article, which was updated after the NL article apparently:

EDITOR'S NOTE: Nintendo called Kombo up today and requested that it be known that some of the above information is not officially announced for North America and as a result, may not be completely accurate.

Specifically, they told us that you will not be able to play GB and GBA games directly from your SD memory card. Also, downloadable GB and GBA games have not officially been announced for North America (only Japan, so far).

Nintendo is holding their GDC 2009 key note speech tomorrow. Expect to be informed of the complete capabilities of DSi tomorrow. As always, Kombo will keep you updated.

that's weird, though. why didn't NL retract/update that when Kombo did?

There's a lot of places that already offer normal wireless (McDonalds, Panera, Starbucks) to their patrons, so I don't see why they (McDonalds, at least) wouldn't be willing to modify whatever existing setups they've got and then make a big fuss via commercials, cardboard stands, signs, etc. about how kids can bring in their Nintendo DSs and get an extra pokemon or play a new level on (insert game here). It would help bring in the customers for them, IMO. :)

everything I've been able to find online refers to DS cartridge capacity in mega and gigabits, not mega or gigabytes. a 1Gb (gigabyte = GB, gigabit = Gb) cartridge would actually hold somewhere around 128MB, if the online converter I found is correct.

I don't see what would be stopping them from making cartridges that would be big enough to hold all three discs' worth of information, though, except maybe price. the size is there -- they've got MicroSD cards with crazy capacity (how the heck could i possibly take 8 gigabytes worth of phone pics, lol). If I were to re-buy FFVII, I don't know that I would want to pay like sixty bucks for it because they had to come up with a high-capacity cartridge to put it on. I'd rather see them re-make it entirely like they did with FFIII/FFIV.

I still have trouble beating SMB3. I didn't beat it completely on my own without warps until I was 18, I think, and I'd been playing it since its release. Beat Mario World within a year or two of its release. SMB3 is definitely the harder of the two for me, and that does have its appeal.

I agree with you -- i think I was able to beat SMW (with all exits) long before I finally beat SMB3 without warps, and we'd had it ever since it came out (i remember my parents running out to buy it and then playing it all night, hahaha). There are some parts of SMB3 that still give me trouble on off-days, like the second half of world 5 (darn those flying beetle-things and that stupid flying fire-chomp thing), though I can usually breeze through SMW with no problem except for the Special area.

SMB3 would definitely be my favorite if, like Digiki said, you could replay levels at leisure. I know you could in the GBA Super Mario Advance 4 version, but I don't think you can in the NES version... then again, i've never tried. hmm...
