@Edwin: It's like watching a season of an anime series before watching the theatrical movie release; the movie (alternate-universe) release is perfectly fine on its own, but you'll get more out of it after having watched the rest of the (canon) series first. That's how I feel about it, anyway.

that happens with my phone in low-light situations as well, it's normal (and sometimes people get caught with weird expressions, too, not just blinking, lol). also, since the DSi doesn't have a flash (like my phone), you'll notice that your hand needs to be a little steadier when the lighting is bad because the shutter stays open a little longer to compensate (to absorb as much light as it can). if you move away too quickly from a picture in low light to take the next, you'll end up with a bunch of blurry pictures.

Bit.Trip Beat and Strong Bad 5 are both solid, fun games, I've got both and they're awesome.

I've never played AS: Code and Real Football, because they haven't been released here in the US yet (and who am i kidding, i still probably wouldn't bother with RF because soccer isn't really my favorite game anyway, lol). Code looked interesting, though, and i would already have it if it were released here. :3 But as for AS: Aquia/Aquite, it turned out to be not as much fun as I'd hoped. I was pretty bored with it after a while, unlike Pyoro which is rather addictive and great for a quick burst of gaming when you can't settle in for a more lengthy game.

I'd go for the Wii points if I were you, to be honest. :)

I wholeheartedly agree with this assessment of Ratatouille. It was a gorgeous movie, there were parts that I didn't know if they'd just filmed some real-life sequences as backgrounds (like when the inspector is chasing Remy through the streets, there's a part where the camera is whipping past some boats and cars and stuff and man does it ever look real except for the characters!), but I really wanted more with the love interest (it all happened so fast) and some more tension with the food critic guy (it just doesn't seem like the situation is really dire, to be honest; it has the wrong feel to it). more time spent on characterization would've been nice. :3

as for games that would be completely new to Nintendo, recently i just got the urge to play Loop. It's a Shockwave game where you use your mouse to catch butterflies of various colors that flutter across the screen by drawing a 'loop' around them. it seems like it would be easy enough to make such a game, and it's so addictive online i can only imagine how addictive it would be in portable form. :3

here's a link to it if you're interested in trying it: Loop at shockwave.com

Heh, I know, but you can't argue against the blue shell. It's quite possibly the most fun power-up in any Mario game. The baby Bowser fights were fun, too.

I have to respectfully disagree... I really despised the blue shell. The big mushroom was great, i loved that, and same for the mini mushroom, but the blue shell I can totally live without. :/

__adam wrote:

Galaxy's soundtrack was okay, but I much prefer electronic music to orchestras. Orchestrated music just seems too over the top and exaggerated for me. I like the music for the stories that you read in the library though, and I love the SMB3 theme they use in some of the short (aka good) levels. But most of it just feels out of place to me. Like I'm playing some epic game instead of a game with a plump plumber versus a big turtle and a baby turtle.

you have no idea how much i LOVE the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack. Every other Mario game has had only synthesized music, and I love orchestrated versions of video game music anyway (usually on a soundtrack/bonus disc they'll have like one piece arranged for and played on actual instruments... sigh), so when I began playing SMG, i was blown away by its music. you're right, it does make it feel like you're playing some kind of epic game, but it's an epic game with a plump plumber fighting a couple of giant turtles and their turtle henchmen, which makes it that much better. :D

the only problem with the orchestrated soundtrack, though, is:
(a) that it is not available for commercial sale, curse you Nintendo! the 2-disc platinum set goes for $60-$70 easy on eBay! you guys want to talk about Nintendo not wanting their players' money for not releasing Smash Bros. 64 and Majora's Mask everywhere on VC, how about the people willing to pay that kind of price for a damn soundtrack??? DDD:
(b) that there will be no going back from this for me. anything produced after SMG that tries to go back to fully synthesized music... i fear it will only be a disappointment to my ears and I. :(

I loved Wall-E too, and it irritated me when people dismissed it as making fun of fat/obese people -- if you look closely at their body structure, they're shaped like giant babies, and people allowing themselves to be pampered and cared for 24-7 (just like a baby) is a big part of the storyline.

Cars was all right, but definitely not as much fun as... well, anything else they've put out besides Ratatouille, to be honest. Not that I hated Ratatouille or anything, it just wasn't as great story-wise as I'd hoped it would be either.

anyway, re: the actual topic, i always preferred OoT to LttP because it's easier to play. i get lost all the time or sidetracked in LttP and then forget where I was really going or what I was doing, and then i have to consult a game guide to get back to where I needed to be... or, god forbid, i worked my way alllll the way up to a corner of the map only to realize that what I really needed to be doing was all the way in the opposite corner of the map before I could do whatever it was I had just worked my way toward. oops. in OoT, I never had that problem... in fact, the only time I ever had to consult a guide to get through a dungeon in OoT was in the Forest Temple because I hadn't realized that one key is actually outside (and believe you me I scoured what I could get to inside the Temple before I finally gave up).

Blackdragon: That gives too little time to spot the icon, decode it into a button press and then hit the button in most rythm games, I suppose with a paddle that's less of an issue because the icon position is the same as the position of your reaction (I couldn't play Stepmania until I laid the keys out to be in a horizontal line rather than up/down/left/right because that takes less decoding time).

You get used to it after a while. I didn't really ever think about it, to be honest, until a friend of mine (we were both hanging around the DDR machine at the arcade that day) asked me where on the screen I was actually looking at while playing a song. It's not that I ever intended to start off doing that, but that's where I ended up. It's easy enough to hit the right step on a beat with enough practice, but watching all the way up at the start gives you too much information to keep track of in the middle (as you mentioned before) and I tend to forget what I needed to hit after a few steps. watching in the middle but closer to the goal line still lets you watch the actual stepping area out of the corner of your eye (in cases where you have to manipulate a paddle like in BTB) so you can maneuver the paddle into the right position with one part of your brain and keep track of what's coming next with the other.

I don't really know how else to explain it, but eventually you (or me) just settle in to steadily watching the middle of the screen instead of wavering between the starting and ending points. the only rhythm game series this hasn't been true for (for me personally, i can't really speak for anyone else) has been Elite Beat Agents/Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan because that involves no screen movement toward an end or goal line.

The key with this (and with other rhythm games), though, is practice. in the end, the draw is to do better than what you (or maybe your friends :3) did before, and i know that doesn't really appeal to everyone. with all the practice it takes to do well, eventually you end up remembering (memorizing) which kind of movements come at which point of a song, especially if it's a tricky area or it gives you problems every time. it happens gradually, and once you've figured something out, if you leave the game alone for a year and then come back to it, it's just like riding a bike to pick it back up again.

KDR_11k wrote:

(re: TWEWY) I didn't focus on both so much as occasionally look at the top screen to see in which direction I have to aim my attacks there and kept hitting the buttons while focussing on the lower screen since that needs more aiming.

to be honest, me too. it was a lot to concentrate on all at once... it was definitely interesting, but i've already admitted to myself that i'll probably never master it. Using Beat as a partner is the worst, because if you screw up with the cards you get burned... if it wasn't for the fact that you didn't get injured for blindly hitting left or right with him, i don't think i would care. :(

half of a rhythm game is its music. for focusing, I know with this game (and with other same-direction moving rhythm games like Guitar Hero, DDR, and ITG), I tend to focus on the area just before where the notes/arrows/bits have to be strummed/stepped/caught by the paddle. It's a lot easier if you practice (and you're naturally able to concentrate on the music, i guess :P), because you get a feel for when you're going to have to deflect the bits (or step or strum in the other games) by knowing what the music should sound like.
