@Zane: true, but you'll also note there was no mention of a Virtual Console DSi at their conference this morning.

it would definitely be cool, though, if you could download packs of new levels via wiiware, or if it included a level editor for user generated content. NSMBWii Kaizo, anyone? that would be awesome/hilarious.

Nintendo said for Wii. They would have specified WiiWare. WiiWare would be a huge mistake. A name as big as Mario's needs to have a store shelf presence to sell the amount of copies Nintendo wants this holiday season.

also, Reggie said before in an interview that they would not bring a mainstream Mario title to Wiiware because they wanted more 'original' and/or 'innovative' titles on the download service, or some other nice way of saying 'no but hell no' to a Wiiware Mario platformer.

Nintendo, we love you again.

this, and Flipnote Studio/Moving Memo is coming this summer! w00t!

i figured we'd get another NSMB game, but i didn't think they'd put it on the Wii. It looks like fun with four-player action like that. i wonder if we'll be able to play with friends via wi-fi?

Heeeyyyy, I like this idea! They were able to integrate a shopping list into Personal Trainer Cooking, so seems like it would be easy enough to make it a standalone app. Sign me up!

that would be so nerdy-awesome, especially if you could save prices depending on which store you went to (Wal-Mart vs. Food Lion, for example) and then use that to pre-calculate your next projected shopping trip and such. i'd pay a couple hundred nintendo points for that, lol.

But otherwise, I might pick up Dr. Mario or something for a few minutes or play Brawl for half an hour on a weekend.

i hear ya; Dr. Mario is what I'll play when there's nothing on TV and I'm waiting for something to boil on the stove or whatever.

by your definition, when i've got something to play, i would probably fall under 'hardcore', but when there's nothing out that i want to play, i would go back to 'casual'. i'm not going to touch on the actual games though, just the time spent and experience playing them (because everyone's got their own opinion of what is a hardcore game and what isn't).

It's a game of its own, to be honest. 108 characters is a lot to recruit, and there's a lot of sidequests and little bits of optional story here and there that flesh them all out -- everyone has at least a little bit of backstory; you're not just picking up people to fill your castle with warm bodies, and almost everyone has something new to say in reaction to major story events, so you can spend a lot of time between story events just running around and hearing what everyone has to say. There are other aspects of it that are not present in or are different than Final Fantasy as well, like the trading system, party setup and support characters, the team battle system, combined attacks, and party missions.

Long story short, since a good chunk of the characters in the game are optional recruits, your play experience is going to be what you make of it. it'll either be a longer game with an enormous cast or it'll be a shorter game and you'll probably be disappointed. While Tierkreis is perhaps not the absolute best example of a Suikoden game, all the other Suikoden releases were (or were first released as) console titles, so for a handheld game it's still a lot of fun.

also, Amazon.co.uk doesn't have it in stock, but Amazon.com does. weird. o_O

a Zelda vs. Dark Link fight? hell, that could be a major part of the story -- where Dark Link (or a random Ganon-type evil entity in the form of Dark Link) has realized that Link himself is big in Hyrule, but he/it can't directly face him due to his strength and power and general awesomeness and stuff, so he first befriends Link, then kidnaps or ousts him from the land somehow (puts him out into another dark world or some other dimension?) and Link has to fight his way back. In the meantime, Dark Link masquerades himself as Link (in this storyline DL would not be all shadowed and stuff at first), and before Zelda realizes what's going on he's usurped her power entirely (the people rely on Link to save them all, so they're blindly loyal to Dark Link in his place) and has her confined to her tower, and she has to escape (as Sheik, leaving maybe a lady in waiting or something to pretend to be her so he doesn't think anything's going on), find the real Link, and then they both work together to storm the castle. w00t.

Well, since it's already out... :P

Adam is right, both have mixed roles as damsels in distress. Zelda has more prominent roles in OoT (as Sheik) and Windwaker (as Tetra). no one cares about the CDi game, though. :P She was also holding a pretty nice sword and playing commander in some scenes before being shut up in her tower in Twilight Princess, so i think it's safe to say she knows how to fight. we've just never really gotten to see her in action is all.

As for Peach, she has more prominent roles in SMB2(US), Super Mario RPG (hell, she fights for the first time in SMRPG), Paper Mario(you can control her for a little bit anyway)/Super Paper Mario, and Super Princess Peach. Peach is also a playable character in Super Mario Kart and Mario Tennis; those don't have any kind of major story or plot, though.

it would certainly make things a lot easier for me, since we have three computers with DVD playback in the house and thus nothing actually hooked up to a TV with a remote control and no screensavers to shut off. i've used the Wii for DVD playback via homebrew, but i heard the rumors that it can wear out the drive, so I stopped. i'd rather have a dedicated Wii than a dead Wii DVD player; i don't have the kind of money it would take to get that repaired.

@Adam: I have never really noticed any odd noises coming from the Wii during DVD playback, but then I'm sitting across the room from the thing while watching a DVD on it and not right up next to it, so YMMV, i guess.

Aside from games in the Suikoden series, I've enjoyed Final Fantasy III-VII and Tactics (i haven't had a PS2 or 3, so I haven't had a chance to play any others), Chrono Trigger (but not so much Chrono Cross; the magic system really threw me for a loop to be honest), the Legend of Zelda series (except Zelda II, never played it but i probably should try it one of these days), Okami, Megaman Legends, Wild Arms, Threads of Fate (it was a surprisingly good game, I really liked the way you could play as either main character to get both sides of the entire story), Pokemon (though more for the social aspect of the game than the story itself), SMRPG and the Paper Mario series (though i haven't had the chance to play The Thousand Year Door yet), the Breath of Fire series, the FFA/Mana series (Legend of Mana is my favorite)... i remember playing Illusion of Gaia, but i can't remember if I beat it or not, and Jade Cocoon pretty much sucked. i'm sure i'm forgetting others i've played over the years.

I prefer my RPGs to have a lot of character interaction (which is probably why most of my list are action RPGs instead of more boring traditional level-yourself-up-to-beat-the-bad-guy-at-the-end stuff like Gauntlet and Diablo and the like, which i can't stand) and to have either turn-based or straight-up action combat... 'active battle' stuff just irritates me, and in the case of Star Ocean 2 in particular I got so frustrated with having to keep track of all that was going on in a battle that after I screwed up really, really bad at one point (i accidentally progressed the story before leveling my characters, and i'd already saved so i couldn't leave the area anymore to go grinding) i just gave up. the story was really, really good, but the frustration was not worth it.

so what kind of RPGs do you like to play? :3
