Miyamoto just called, said he wanted my input on some kind of new peripheral for just that. So I flew out to NoJ's R&D place, and it turns out they actually built a freaking dolphin. It weighs 600 lbs, swims around (within a 30-foot radius of the Wii, at least), and runs on fish (as well as batteries for the wiimote you shove into its blowhole), but the bad part is that you need to set up your Wii on a pier or the beach in order to use it (well, that, and it also smells like fish D: ).

After testing it out for a while, we got bored with the connection to the Wii constantly cutting out, so we went fishing instead, but i hate fishing so we went and got some Indian chow. I'm afraid I had to tell him it would be a flop on the market. He thanked me, autographed my t-shirt, and then I flew home.

@Objection_Blaster: I liked Rise from the Ashes because it really showcased what improvements they were able to make with the DS as opposed to the ported GBA episodes (and in retrospect, it helped to flesh Ema's character out considerably, though not so much where she picked up the Snackoo habit, and Gumshoe got some good airtime as well). Storywise, though, it's not really my favorite either. They did their best to fit it in, but it still felt odd to play through the previous three episodes with Maya and then to not see hide nor hair of her in that 'last' case. It also didn't get a splash image for the episode-choosing screen, IIRC, which helped to make it stand out from the others worse.

I don't see the big deal, Stuffgamer1, especially since the Parental Controls are there and are rather easy to set up. the splash image for Splatterhouse and Splatterhouse 2 are just the names in text on a dark background, so if push came to shove and the parents didn't restrict the Wii Shop along with the game ratings the kids could play (there is a separate option to restrict downloads and credit card transactions via the Wii Shop, I just checked through the Parental Controls), they could download it and just stare at the splash image or the PIN request all day.

as for 'assuming that every parent uses the parental controls is a bit much'... providing them is all Nintendo has to do, and in court their legal team is going to say 'hey, you had the option to restrict adding Nintendo Points and to restrict downloads to keep them from downloading a game without your supervision, you had the option to require a PIN for them to play games rated beyond what you want them to play, it was all right there in the user manual and easy to find in the System Menu, and you chose to not use them. It's your problem, not ours.'

@Kim Jong-Il: The World Ends with You is probably the most original thing Square has had a hand in in years. Definitely agreeing with you there.

Also, Suikoden II has been my favorite game ever since I played it for the first time. It follows the story of two boys who each gain a half of one of the 27 True Runes and, thanks to its power, end up each working to stop the war occurring in the game, but in radically (tragically?) different ways. If ever there was a game where you want to get the 'best' ending, this is it, IMO. It's a long game if you're looking to complete it fully (longer if you take time to play through the first game to its 'best' ending so that you can recruit the main Suikoden character and his servant, who gives you like the best recipe for the cooking battles in the game, but i ramble) and if you take time to keep your characters leveled (a must for the Luca Blight three-part battle, to be honest). (almost) every single recruitable character has an interesting backstory that adds to the richness of the plot (especially if you play the games in order, but it's not absolutely necessary to understand the plot), and the sidequests are really fun(ny), too.

It is not worth the $120+ people want for it on eBay, though.

Using same scale as some popular song uses is quite different from ripping direct samples from popular recordings.

agreed. I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere (it was an article describing the music of Wicked) that you can take up to 7 notes' worth of a song before it officially becomes a derivative work or plagiarism.

@WolfRamHeart: Most of the 'bad' reviews for this game seem to be comparing it to other titles in the series. Since you've never played any of the series before, and I haven't had a PS2 or 3 to play any of the newer games on, I'm not seeing any huge problems with this title, and you probably won't either. the plot is pretty generic, sure, but i've certainly played worse.

The Suikoden series is unique in that the games rely on recruitment of the 108 Stars of Destiny (or 'Starbearers' in this game) to get the 'best' ending. The recruitment is in the form of a buttload of sidequests. It's kinda like Breath of Fire II in that the characters you recruit will eventually do stuff for you back at your base, only (unlike Breath of Fire II) you're encouraged to recruit anybody and everybody, not just the couple of people who will give you the best stuff. when you come to a point where you can decide what to say, try to go with the more favorable of the two choices (instead of 'maybe you should go home', choose 'why not join us?', for example), but there's a couple places where you can say things that look terrible in print, but the leader character will turn it around to be something awesome. that's another thing i like about this game; coming off of a Phoenix Wright marathon, it's nice to play a character where you're not constantly saying the wrong thing. :3 anyway, you can (probably) get through the game all right without doing any of them, and the ending you get will be all right, but the 'best' ending brings with it a sense of accomplishment and pride and blah-blah-blah.

it can be a little frustrating to get certain sidequests to trigger (in this game, apparently the season has something to do with some quests), and there are indeed missable characters, so I wouldn't recommend playing without a guide unless you don't mind the idea of not getting the best ending possible. after major battles/missions, you will be able to pursue the sidequests. if you're currently in the middle of progressing the storyline, you usually have to finish what you're doing before you can go back to recruiting.

The Suikoden series also plays a lot of politics. There's always some war between nations or groups going on, and the main character slowly worms their way into a position of power by maintaining a base of operations, collecting Stars of Destiny, and fighting honestly (as opposed to marrying their way to the top in an attempt to change things from the inside or performing some kind of coup to wrest someone's leadership away from them for no good reason). usually there's some anime-like questioning of 'why are we fighting' or 'what am i fighting for'; i'm not seeing that yet in Tierkreis so much, but i'm expecting it to show up sooner or later.

the magic system in Tierkreis (so far; there's a couple characters i'm going to get soon that i'm not sure what's going to happen with at the moment) consists of 'Marks of the Stars', and you collect a new spell every so often. each Mark has a different MP cost, and each character gains a different set of Marks (one character will get a spell at this point, another character will get the same spell at the next point). There comes a time in the game where you can start switching out your spells (you can only have four usable ones on you at any given time), though, and at that point you will need to manually add any new spells you acquire to your characters (they won't automatically show up on you as they had before). Any new characters you recruit will also need you to manually add their spells; otherwise they won't be able to use any Marks in battle.

As I said before, in Tierkreis you can only have four characters in your party and one supporting character, and with so many to choose from, you'd think some just wouldn't get any battle at all... but Tierkreis uses a lot of teams during major story events, and you'll have to fight separately. For this reason, it's a good idea to keep your characters leveled up and to make sure you've got them outfitted with decent weapons and armor every so often. it's easy to take a low-level character out with a couple of high-level characters every so often and get into a couple random fights, no big deal.

Fighting is turn-based (no active-battle stuff or anything), and visually, this game looks pretty much like the Final Fantasy DS remakes (3-D environments, characters with lots of polygons, etc.), but the dialogue sequences and character menu have pictures of the characters that pop up to show them as they're speaking (sometimes they'll get angry, sometimes they'll be laughing, whatev') that match the images from the FMVs.

... and i can't think of anything else to say to be honest. :3 If you find you like this game and really want to get into the Suikoden series, though, pirate yourself a copy of Suikoden II (it's no longer in print and there's no reason whatsoever to spend $120+ for it, holy crap eBay :() and give that a whirl. It's a damn good game.

@Edwin: if you can get to some of those parts, sure, but the gameplay was terrible -- the monsters' constant respawning was irritating as hell, the turtles couldn't freaking swim (despite being turtles, for crying out loud!), and once you lost Donatello, there went the fun. also, graphically it was nothing like the TV series i'd expected to see reflected in the game. i could never get past the part where you have to walk on the ropes between buildings (always died either during or soon afterward) and we both (because i had to share NES time with my little brother, lol) were constantly running out of ammo for the Turtle Van for whatever reason. i don't remember bothering with the original game but once after we got a copy of TMNT II: The Arcade Game, and after Turtles in Time there was no appeal whatsoever behind going back to that kind of frustration.

Did he even give a reason or had proof to why?

He told me that the reason why (i dont believe him now) was GB GBC GBA games would have to basically be made to fit the screen cause of the difference of the Lite to the DSi saying the game would look stretched out & not looking like the Originals on the Ds Lite (thats all that he said) i laughed when i got home from work that night xD!

... wow. i would have been hard-pressed to not confront him about the Phoenix Wright games on the spot (which are basically GBA ports themselves and look just fine on both the DS Lite and the DSi)... not to mention that all DS games are displayed larger on the DSi with no real problems (not that I've noticed, anyway). it's one thing to say 'I'm sorry, but the President of NoA himself has said 'no' to that possibility when asked', but it's a jerk move entirely to come up with a flat-out lie like that.

it sucks that it took us so long to get it, is all. also, i kinda wish that you could register imported DS games; the DS is region-free, so why shouldn't their club nintendo codes also be region-free? :P
