i think some of our signals have crossed, here, Adam, but allow me to address your points first:

(a) Link holding the shield in his left hand has never been featured in any Nintendo concept art like ever, not even for concept art of Twilight Princess. I understand why that is, and i get what you're saying about it being because the Wii version is being worked for right-handed people from the ground up, but it is still a fact that it was the first thing that stood out to me when i looked at that poster (aside from the chick in the foreground). it was not 'surprising', it just struck me as odd, plain and simple, until i finally was able to put my finger on it and then voice my opinion.

believe me, i've explained the whole 'TP was held back for so long for GC because...' thing more than a few times in posts to the main site and here on the forums. i understand the why, but it still looks odd when held up to every other piece of concept art for LoZ to have come out of Nintendo. :)

(b) as for the flipping, I prefer the original OoT-style layout of Hyrule because i've played that game so damn much over the years (i think i played TP once in comparison... the replay value just wasn't there for me like it was for OoT). It was so weird playing TP for Wii because pretty much everything was still there (updated of course, but for the most part all the major areas from OoT had come back), it was just on the opposite side of the map from where it was supposed to be re: OoT, and to be honest I would really rather they used the OoT-style layout from the GC version of TP for the next game.

as for the crossed signals, you said

weirdadam wrote:

This is a grounds-up Wii title, so it would make no sense for them to design Link as a lefty and at the last minute mirror the entire game.

where I was thinking in terms of OoT being the original general 3-D Zelda game layout to be mirrored... to which I replied

theblackdragon wrote:

we don't know that they won't, though. what if they decide they'd rather make things easier on the 'casual' gamer and leave Hyrule flipped for ease of finding everything again after having played through Twilight Princess?
(this is, of course, assuming the game is even set in Hyrule...)

because i do not prefer the TP flipped-from-OoT general layout and would rather them go back to the OoT-style, but i'm (like you when you say 'if they did, they'd be using the Wii version, which is already based on right-handed Link') figuring they won't because they already started off the Wii versions of Zelda with that layout and they'd rather stick to it to keep their more casual gamers happy/unconfused.
Again, this is all assuming it's going to be set in Hyrule again. :3

sure have -- you already mentioned the cartridges may die, which is an issue for games with save files, and in certain cases (where I had myself owned updated remakes of older games, Super Mario Advance 4: SMB3 and SMAll-Stars for example) it's nice to be able to play it again with all its original graphics and stuff, just like i remember from when I was really little. the Wii save-state thing is a great feature too.

even if it was as garbled as Altavista's Babelfish can get, that would be a seriously awesome app. i wonder if they'd provide add-on language packs down the line? and i love the camera idea, so long as we have the ability to type as well. i have noticed that, when outside, the DSi does not display as well on the lower brightness settings that I prefer to use in order to conserve battery time, and that could be an issue for capturing words in outdoor places when you wouldn't want to be wasting your battery too much.

Also, Black Dragon, he's probably holding the shield in his left hand for the same reason Link was made to be right-handed in the Wii version of Twilight Princess: Most players are right-handed, so this better suits motion control.

there's never been any concept art or anything (aside from screenshots of the Wii version) that reflected that change, though. that poster is a first for Nintendo in that respect, and it looked odd to me as well.

either way, i certainly hope they don't run out of time on this one and flip the entire land of Hyrule again. It was weird to come out of OoT and then suddenly the entire layout of the place was (mostly) the same, only backwards. D:

On another site, they said it's not going to be a download version. it's going to be a Retail version for $30. I hope both of them are either dsiware or retail.

they said nothing about it either way at the conference. all they said was that Moving Memo is now Flipnote Studio in America and would be released this summer.

i did find this, where they say they spoke with a Nintendo Rep who said it would be a full retail release (note that the Rep did not outright say 30bux, but the blogger said they would not be so willing to plunk down thirty dollars for it if that came to be the case), but after some of the other things Nintendo Reps have said about/since the DSi's release (the VC DSi kerfluffle and the one that tried to say GBA games would not display properly on the DSi due to the larger screens come to mind), it's pretty clear that they're either (a) clueless or (b) mistaken, and therefore not to be trusted at face value.

edit: i take back what i said before about us knowing or not knowing whether we were getting v1 or v2 -- comparing the old Japanese trailer on YouTube to the new screenshots on Nintendo's E3 site, it looks like what we're getting is the same menu-and-feature-wise (as shown by the extra buttons) as MMv2. i figured that's what they must've been waiting for. :D

actually, we won't know exactly which version it actually is until it's released and someone has a chance to look over the features (if the new ones are available, we can assume it's v2, but if they're not there, it's v1). we can only go on what they said at the press conference at the moment, and at the conference they didn't say 'Flipnote Studio v2', they just said 'Flipnote Studio'. :)

to officially unlock them, you need to have beaten Bowser in Bowser's Galaxy Reactor. with 16 stars left to go, though, you should've done that by now. are comet stars (prankster or purple) the only ones you're missing, or is there another normal or green star left? i found it was easier to get the comet stars by getting all the normal/green ones first, and then after that the comets began to appear one by one (when one appears, play that star until you get it, and then another comet will appear in a different galaxy -- check the big map to see where it showed up if not in the same room) until i'd gotten all 120 stars. i was gonna hafta get 'em all anyway, so i figured i may as well just complete them as the game gives them to you.

once you've got all 120 with Mario, you'll have to beat Bowser's Galaxy Reactor again to unlock Luigi, just so you know (you won't automatically be able to play as him after getting the 120th star).

Also, i would agree with you about local multiplayer being more fun, but if you're like me, it's hard to get together with friends between work and school and blah-blah-blah. it would be much easier to be able to find players online for co-op play... however, at that point you'd have to deal with hackers (like in Mario Kart now). i'd at least like to have the option for online play.
