Oh, I know it's not going to stop anything...but it is unfortunate. I shudder at what is likely happening to the literacy rate.

oh, i dunno... i know people who type worse than AOL users, speak like /b/tards, and read plenty of books. how people type or behave on the internet does not always equal what they do or how they behave IRL. :3

re: teenagers you know of -- i think it's all a phase, for the most part, and when it ticks off the older generations, kids love it even more. it's like those commercials for the phone texting service with the kid speaking in acronyms (idk, my bff jill?) and the mom is all 'wtf'... but they'll grow out of it just like we grew out of whatever silly phases we went through when we were their age, y'know? it's useless to get worked up over unless there's someone present using strange words to such an extent that you absolutely cannot understand what they're saying, which is not the case at the moment.

@Prosody: Game values are weird. For me, their true value is in the playing (i don't give a rat's behind about collecting), and I'm all about being able to play them at a reasonable price, which was why i brought up re-releases. Pirating games like Chrono Trigger and/or Final Fantasy IV would be something I would not advocate, for example, because they're currently in print and you can also find authentic secondhand copies on eBay for at or below what they went for at retail (I saw a couple copies of Final Fantasy Chronicles GH for $25ish buy-it-now with free shipping, so the extra $5 would cover tax and the gas it would take to get to the store and back IMO).

@Swerd_Murd: holy crap, do you ever have good gaming luck! may it never run out on you. :)

I can't see how buying a pirate copy cheaper is more acceptable than buying a genuine second hand copy. If a game is out of print or hard to find, of course its price is going to increase! And people complain about games not having "true value".

i'm thinking in terms of games that have seen no re-release since it originally came out and where the price of a real secondhand copy may be absolutely outrageous, like Earthbound and Suikoden II (the latter will likely be re-released eventually on the PSN, but who knows when). If I can't shell out the $100 that someone wants for an Earthbound cartridge when at release it was probably $60 or so, should I really be barred from downloading and playing it via emulator until NoJ gets their heads out of their butts and allows the changes necessary for its VC release? or how about $120 for Suikoden II when it was originally about $50-60 as well? It's such an awesome game that it kills me to think people might not be playing it just because it had a limited printing and other people want to cash in.

They really haven't had anything that obnoxious on this site, and they're respective of their readers so they'll remove anything that gets complaints. I do sympathize with having an older computer around that can't browse quickly with all the flash ads popping up everywhere, as I've kept plenty of old machines around well past their time, so I get the point of using Adblock in general, but I still feel that one shouldn't be proudly declaring their use of it as if there is no significant drawback for the site's owners. If possible, only use Adblock on sites that are more irritating with their ads, but keep it off if you want to make a tiny contribution based on your frequent browsing of the blog.

is there some way to allow ads to show up on one site in particular via Adblock, though? all I've seen it do is block ads by where the ads themselves are loaded from (not by the website featuring them), and i'm not about to go back through and allow those particular offsite providers just so I can support NL with their relatively inoffensive ads and then go back to a different site i maybe frequent and get pounded by their allowing more annoying/offensive ads from the same offsite providers.
